As far as Breath of the Wild on Wii U is concerned, it doesn't display anything on the pad (other than the option to switch from TV to pad). Originally they built it similar to the HD releases of the GameCube Zeldas, with an inventory screen and/or map, but when porting it to Switch, I get the feeling they didn't want to give the Wii U version a clear gameplay advantage over their shiny new console. They ended up cutting the features to give both versions parity. I don't really see any horsepower reason the game couldn't have done an inventory screen as it did originally.
I love this game so much, it's possibly my favorite game of the last 10-15 years. It's definitely not perfect, but its exploration feels so much like a modern take on Zelda 1 that its flaws didn't ruin my enjoyment.
Real bummer, I loved that first game sooo much (haven't played the second one). Really enjoyed exploring the world, the story and the combat. I mean the combat was ok, it was engaging but simple and most encounters were pretty easy. Either way, everything fit together in a way that made a really enjoyable game, that I still replay every now and then.

The Thousand-Year Door is my second-favorite game of all time. It's absolutely worth tracking down. One of the most charming, best-written, mechanically well-thought-out RPGs I've ever played.
This seems cool, I'd have like to have seen a couple more as I was starting to figure it out.
The demo is pretty good at laying out the basics, so if this seemed confusing but interesting, I highly recommend playing the demo. The save transfers to the full game too.
