Wanna Wrestle? #9 - WWE Vengeance Review

Here's a short review of my thoughts about Vengeance 2011:

WWE Vengeance Review

Overall, I would say that I was pleasantly surprised overall by Vengeance. Going into the show, the card looked pretty bad and I would've been upset if I payed for a ticket to see it live. Every match just didn't seem like it meant anything in the long run, and the entire night was easily predictable (I only got two outcomes wrong)... but everybody involved went out there and put on a good show.

Pros:

  • Ziggler Was Perfection: Putting Dolph Ziggler in two opening matches back to back is a great way to put an up and coming wrestler through the ringer. His opening tag match against Air Boom was great, the highlight of that was the Monkey Flip he took from Kofi Kingston and then the collision during the cross-body. After that, he had a fine match against Zach Ryder in which the highlight of that match was Ziggler taking a fucking stiff Broski Kick. Dolph reminds me a lot of Austin Aries in TNA, in that every motion he does in a match has a purpose and he's really fun to watch in the ring.
  • A Diva's Match Was Actually Good: I have no clue why Kelly Kelly was getting all of these Diva's PPV matches. Eve proved that she could actually compete and put on a good match against Beth Pheonix at Vengeace. We'll see how this continues (spoiler alert: Kelly Kelly will get another shot over Eve).
  • Broken Ring: The Mark Henry vs. Big Show match was better than it had any right to be. The last time these two fought, it was the only downpoint of one of the best PPV in a long time. This time, the match was a bit faster paced, and the two men kicking out of each other's finishers was a good moment in a match that actually felt like it had some importance. The ring breaking in the end was a neat spot to revisit, but I was bummed that nobody on the announce team even admitted that the exact same spot was done several years ago.
  • The Broken Ring Match: I had little care about Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena in a Last Man Standing Match going in... but forcing them to compete inside a broken ring was a thing of brilliance. It added a layer of fun seeing them wrestle with no ropes and the mat was at an angle. The match itself reminded me of an Austin era no DQ match that went all over the building, and had a lot of props used in the match.

Cons:

  • Some Matches Didn't Really Matter: HHH/CM Punk vs. Awesome Truth was a fine old school tag team wrestling match, but this storyline behind "who's pulling the strings?" has gone on for a bit too long now, and the fact that there was no payoff was a bit of a bummer. Christian vs. Sheamus was another good match, but we saw the same exact match two weeks ago at Hell In A Cell (A match that was better than this one, might I add).
  • Ortan Over Rhodes: I don't mind that Cody Rhodes lost, but I do mind the way he lost it. There was two guys interfering and Rhodes still ended up losing, which made him look bad. The IC belt wasn't even on the line, so there was no point to the match at all.

Overall: 7/10

Match of The Night: John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio

Anyone else catch Vengeance? What did you think?

EDIT: Here's a little video I made, enjoy!

Ziggler is easily my current favorite wrestler in WWE.

Also Triple H was lookin' kinda chubby.

I didn't see too much of this PPV yet. It's a little weird to see them use the name Vengeance. I thought they would want to avoid anything that might bring up memories of Chris Benoit.

I guess I don't see why so many people like Ziggler so much. Not sure exactly why but he just does not appeal to me.

HHH looks like he got a little winded during his match... Definitely past his prime, and shouldn't be in a PPV match over other talents.

Vengeance is a boring PPV name... it's like Backlash, there's no zing to it. Ziggler hasn't had "that one match" or "that one feud" yet that really puts him over, but I think there will be one soon.

Actually, Cole/Lawler (I forget who) did say that he remembered that Brock Lesnar did something similar (although, he conveniently forgot that he did it to Big Show).

Yeah, Lawler briefly mentioned that it had happened earlier with Brock Lesnar and told some story about how a ring broke duringa 40 man battle royal.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by Vengeance.

I hope Triple H got legit injured during that Jacknife Powerbomb by Nash. That was a nasty bump. Kinda looked like his collarbone popped. Gawd I hate how he's been trying to steal Punk's thunder. Actually, I just hate Triple H period.

Del Rio vs Cena was pretty good cause it played to Cena's strength just like one of his other best matches, the LMS against Umaga few years ago (Which incidentally also featured a screwed up ring.). Anyhoo, maybe, JUST MAYBE, we can get Cena out of the title picture now that he's out of a rematch clause?

100 % this. Ziggler is so fun to watch. He needs to be wwe champ soon. He reminds me a little of Shawn Michaels and little of Billy Gunn . I think he drinks a red bull before every match :D

@TurboMan: I think Lawler mentioned briefly that brock broke the ring once. The wwe announcers and wrestlers have the most awful memory. They needa talk about the past more. Thats where Punk should come in. And how about Rhodes with two back flips ? Very impressive , didn't know he was as athletic as he is. Thank God Ryder didn't win the US belt. Unfortunately , Mason Ryan's gonna win it : (

A 7/10 sounds about right, it was surprisingly good overall .

after watching Raw, it's safe to say that Cena will probably be out of the title hunt until WrestleMania atleast... and Punk/Del Rio will finally get to feud proper.

@spankingaddict: Rhode's moonsault was a thing of beauty.

Tonights announcement of John Cena teaming with the Rock would have been a lot more effective if they hadn't spent all this time advertising the Rock wrestling in a match that was clearly going to involve John Cena.

Usually doing that to sell tickets makes sense, but there was no way a PPV at MSG wasn't selling out

Also if we are talking Cody Rhodes Moonsaults

Also, yeah. Zigglers selling of that monkey flip was amazing. Hell.. his selling is amazing period. If WWE manages to fuck up with Ziggler I've lost all hope.

Would of been a solid PPV if the WWE didn't decide to have 3 PPVs in the span of 6 weeks.   WWE needs to limit the PPVs to at least one a month.  I hope the planned WWE Network will at least fix the problem with some of the lesser PPVs becoming Clash of the Champions or Saturday Night Main Event  style specials.

Well, my impressions from watching that recap video, having not watched anything to do with WWE since Edge's retirement, aside from when that whole Punk leaving storyline happened:

  • Ziggler and Jack Swagger? Huh.
  • Always liked it when they book guys for two matches in one night.
  • Zack Ryder in a title shot? What? I always liked him, but figured he would be perennially midcarded.
  • That divas match actually looked pretty good.
  • Sheamus over Christian? Huh.
  • Triple H is wrestling again, I guess. Wonder why he's teaming with CM Punk though?
  • Oh yeah, Kevin Nash is back in WWE.
  • Cody Rhodes is still wearing that mask, huh? Alright.
  • Orton wins again? Sigh.
  • Oh shit, Mark Henry is the WHC? Why the hell haven't I been watching wrestling?
  • Match between Mark Henry/Big Show looks brutal.
  • Oh, that same "Big Show being superplexed and breaking the ring"-spot that I watched on Youtube yesterday?
  • Cena in the title picture huh. What the fuck else is new? Maybe I shouldn't go back to watching wrestling after all.
  • Broken ring matches are goddamn awesome.
  • For as much as I don't like Cena anymore, matches that go all over the venue are awesome as hell.
  • Cena can only be beaten by a bunch of interference and illegal stuff? Man, I really hate Cena c. 2006 and on.

As a semi-related aside, RAW was in town tonight and I almost went, but I had too much work I had to get done today. So that sucks.

Ziggler is great. And I'm happy that more and more of his charisma and personality is shining through. If you've followed his Twitter, seen him on NXT or X! True Long Island Story over the last two years, you'll notice he's really good at off the cuff stuff.

Hell, he was even asked why he doesn't do more stuff like that on Raw and Smackdown and he said he didn't want to be punished for going too much off the shitty lines that Stephanie and "Creative" are telling him to say.

They need to trust more and more of the new guys with just being told the bullet points and then plopped in front of the cameras. That's how the greats like Austin, Foley and Jericho worked. Thankfully you're seeing guys like Ziggler and Barrett take a more pro-active role in this.

CM Punk's on a whole level of his own though.

In my limited knowledge of the going-ons of the WWE, I can only add that Michael Cole and Vicky Guerrero are the worst. This from hearing wrestling on in the background because my dad still watches.

Michael Cole is annoying as shit cause A. he's not doing his job which is calling the damn match instead of instigating drama about himself and B. cause he isn't good at his job when he actually does call the match. The commentator is supposed to put the wrestlers and the action in the ring over and not constantly bicker with the rest of the commentary team.

Vicky Guerrero however is an utter jewel. The amount of seething heat and boos she can illicit from the crowd is staggering. She's the kind of villain that the wrestling business thrives upon. You just love hating her and can't wait to see her get her comeuppance. Her shrill "EXCUSE ME!" catchphrase riles up the crowd something fierce. And what's even better is that she rarely misses a beat when she cuts a promo in front of a crowd who are unanimously booing her out of the building. Eddie would be so proud of her. I think it's fantastic that she's getting her own Heenan Family-esque stable now with Swagger and Ziggler. Also, I'm finally happy that it seems like Lawler has cut down on the fat jokes about her. She's lost a lot of weight and gotten in really good shape for a woman her age who's had three kids. Not to mention that Lawler is a fat piece of shit too.

@TurboMan: What the fuck? I don't know if there's any truth to this, but people are reporting from the Smackdown taping apparently, and saying there is an Elimination Chamber above the ring. At l east one dirtsheet posted.

- We have received reports from fans in attendance that there is an Elimination Chamber hanging above the ring.

EDIT: Sadly, apparently it was fake.
