My Top 10 Games of Yesteryear

Mostly nostalgia driven list of games which defined my gamer tastes and made me into the gamer I am today !

List items

  • Perhaps one of the first RPG games I really got into that I still occasionally dust off my PlayStation on an almost yearly basis to play, so simple and yet so much fun with a 108 different characters there's always someone new to tryout in your group! I *always* manage to forget how to recruit someone though... somehow! I also feel obliged to point out I own two copies of this game, I fear the first original disc will fail me eventually. :(

  • Perhaps my first introduction to gaming although I was so young I struggle to really remember it, my sister used to play this game while I watched on intently. The game of course is now a classic and it's a status well deserved from the random puzzles that are just laugh out loud funny to the insult dueling this game will always have a place in my heart.

  • I think trying to find anything original to praise this game about would be a lost cause. The first game I more or less literally couldn't put down, many a tired day was spent in school during the time it took me to complete this staying up late to level my materia, breed chocobo's or waste time in the Golden Saucer playing mini-games... Not only does it boast one of the best Soundtracks to any game it also has Vincent.... and lets be honest how cool is Vincent!

  • Ah Streets of Rage 2, I really can't say enough good things about this game I still play it on the Xbox (thank you Arcade!) I realize it's a pretty bog-standard scrolling beat'em up but I just remember many a fond afternoon spent playing through this game (I always picked Max) perhaps my favorite of all Sega titles and a game I still find myself picking up now and playing.

  • Metal Gear...?!?! I still chuckle when I think of some of the classic moments from this game, a personal favorite was our good friend the DARPA Chief. I think it's safe to say that when this game came out it opened a whole new world of gaming to me since I was mostly an RPG gamer but I did fall in love with this almost instantly. - Special mention to MGS 2 which just missed out on this list!

  • Sonic 2 is one of the few Mega-drive (Genesis) games I recall fondly, while other titles jump out at me, examples of such are Echo the Dolphin and Desert Strike Jungle Strike I really remember playing Sonic 2 and thinking "Fuck yeah!" Such a great game and while it didn't really do anything that different to the other Sonics it always to me at least felt like the best out of the Sonic franchises.

  • I missed out on really playing Resident Evil at any great length (I have since done so and enjoyed it immensely) but as a young impressionable youth I remember being scared feckless by Resident Evil 2 and despite the jumpy moments I recovered to finish this game several times. Great game which was a solid foothold into what has become one of the better franchises to grace gaming.

  • A lot of people didn't seem to like this game when compared to the rest of the games in the franchise but personally I would rate this as my favorite of all the Final Fantasy games and indeed the only reason it's not a little bit higher on this list is because I don't feel it has the same replay value as some of the games to come before it. Story wise I feel it has everything including the odd twist and turn.

  • Ash Lambert and co battle a cool (but evil) looking bunch of soldiers in an attempt to bring stability to the world in which they reside. I'll give you the fact it's a pretty normal premise but for someone who didn't like strategy games at the time I found this one pretty solid throw in some character development choices (Huxley as a monk is a must!) it's a very neat little title with a fair amount of replay value - which was rare in games at this time I found.

  • The predecessor to Suikoden and in many ways it's superior to the original in the way it introduces new characters and back story in a way which endears you to some of the games original characters without making the game all about the old favorites. I wish it had encompassed some more of the original games locations though but it's still awesome!
