Game of the Year 2021

It has been a terrible year again, but let's try and cheer ourselves up a little with the top 8 games of the year from my perspective. There are a number of games I'd have loved to have given more time to but could not for one reason or another. I also don't own a switch, which is why Metroid Dread isn't on this list, because I'm sure it would have been if I had (although Unsighted is still probably better, don't bother replying with a wrong opinion you know I'm right). You'll also notice that there are no Blizzard games on this list. Now there only game to come out this year was the remaster of Diablo 2, but I refuse to give these scummy fucks a single penny of my money while they are still harassing their female employees. This of course goes for Ubisoft and Activsion as well, but they were already only making pish games so it's no great loss to me to not play their games. So yeah, no games from them while they are cunts. You're on thin ice with this NFT shit as well Square Enix. I don't care how good FFXIV or the VII remake are.

But without further ado, here's the other games I played this year to see what didn't make the list.

The Medium A deeply unsatisfying horror game. I really wanted to like this and it was the first game I played right at the start of the year. The first hour or so of this made me feel like it was destined for a place on this list, but the more I played of it, the more and more I realised just how terrible the story really was. It has a terrible fucking ending which has some questionable conclusions about survivors of abuse. The game also didn't run very well on my machine. Tory Baker is excellent as the main villain of the story, but even he can't save this from being a mediocre game. I wanted to like this, but it did it's best to make me not.

Scavengers I only played this for around an hour when a friend gave me an early access code for it. And I have to say, it's really not very good at all. Very unrememberable from what I played, maybe it'll get better, I hope so, because what I played wasn't very good.

Skatebird I played a demo of this on steam a year ago and I remember thinking that if they could get the controls in a better place, they might have something on their hands with this. It turns out that they never did get the controls in a crisp place and these games live and die on those. as such this is a very disappointing game.

Aragami 2 A nice little stealth game. I've not played a good one in a while and I really enjoyed what I played of this. I fell off it before the end as I think it ran out of steam and the story was very barebones. But the gameplay has some solid action in it, it's on gamepass so give it a shot maybe?

Dark Alliance I have been running a D&D campaign with friends for nearly 2 years now. As such I've been diving deep into the Forgotten realms lore to help build the campaign world. As such I've learned a little about the characters of this game through that (as I haven't read any of the R.A. Salvador novels). I was also a massive fan of the original games back on the PS2. They reminded me of all the best parts of Diablo 2 but on a console and were solid enough games. So I think I'm in a good place to call this game a MASSIVE PEICE OF FUCKING SHIT! Oh my god this is fucking terrible. How fucking dare you call this game after a legendary series of games. How fucking dare you butcher some of the most beloved D&D characters. How fucking dare you release this game in the piss poor state it was at release and hasn't been improved much since then. This is fucking trash, fuck this game.

Back 4 Blood I wasn't the biggest Left 4 Dead fan so i didn't have the biggest amount of nostalgia for the series but I did enjoy what I played. This seems like it hits those marks that the originals did as well. However no one really seemed interested in playing it. I enjoyed it, but I didn't play much of it.

The Forgotten City I should really get around to giving this thing a proper go, because it seems right up my alley, but it came out in a busy time for me and I just never got back around to it. Wanted to play more but didn't get to, this seems special though.

What the Dub A neat little party game. It's no Jackbox or anything like that, but I did enjoy myself playing this. Getting to dub over scene with Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing is a rare joy it must be said.

Flynn, Son of Crimson A nice side scroller that I could just sit back and play while listening to a podcast or music. It's not doing anything new really, but I enjoyed what I played of it. Still go back to it every once in a while and play some more of it.

List items

  • I came late to Psychonauts 1. I didn't get around to playing it until around 2010. However, I instantly fell in love with the game. The world and it's characters were instantly very charming to me and it managed to do something very hard in games. It made me laugh through it's writing, not a random glitch or unintended moment. The second game is more of the same in this regard, only with a whole load more polish. This game had a world of expectations on it as the sequel to a 16 year old game. As you can guess by it's position on this list, I think they managed to nail it perfectly.

The original voice actors all return to the sequel and the characters are all as well written and funny as they were in the first game. The open world is expanded as well, the area feels bigger and has more in it than the original, but the game slowly brings you into these areas.

The game has so much heart to it. It is dealing with a potentially dangerous subject matter in that you are dealing with people's mental health. It would be very easy for the game to do this in a very untasteful manner. However the game thankfully is able to navigate them in a very respectful way. They even listened to peoples feedback on how Raz could set animals on fire in the previous game. In this game Raz will not only not harm any animals, you can also buy an upgrade to allow you to Pet things like Goats and squirrels. I won't go into the story here but it is a satisfying story from start to finish. That's not to say that the game doesn't have it's problems, and some levels are weaker than the others (the Library level for instance is a weak level and the boss fight at the end isn't the best). However this pales in comparison to the games highs and is why I am more than happy to consider it my own personal Game of the Year.

  • After last year's disappointing Resident Evil 3 remake, this game had some living up to. And I can safely say it lived up to that. This game isn't as scary as 7 or the 2 remake was, but it brought it in other areas. Playing the game was more fun, the areas were large and expansive. There was a nice intrigue to the game's story. It wasn't Shakespeare of course, but finding out why Chris would murder Mia in the opening moments, or who all these crazy people are that look like werewolf and the giant Vampire Lady. It all sets itself up for a nice mystery that slowly unravels over the course of the 20 or so hours the game takes to play.

  • I was a big fan of Dan Mullins previous game Pony Island. When I heard that he was making a card game based roguelike, I was 100% in. Then the reviews started to come in about how batshit insane this game was and I knew I had to try it out myself. I can't really go into what this game is about without spoiling it and I think this game just needs to be experienced. I can't recommend this highly enough, even if you're not a big card game fan. Give it a shot, trust me, it'll be worth it.

  • I've been a massive fan of Roguelikes for years now. A look through my previous GOTY lists will show you that. This is a really cool take on the genre. Most of them are about individual skill in the game, while throwing massive challenges at the player that you have to slowly but surely get more power to overcome. In this game however, it's about managing your resources. You don't do any of the fighting, the game does that for you. Your job is to recreate the world in such a way that it benefits your character and then select his gear to fight in. It's a good idea to have a plan before you start your loop of what you want to do, what resource you want to get in this run. It's a long grind towards victory in this and that will mean most don't finish it. but there is something there for those who continue on.

  • This game gives a great impression of what it's like to be a player in a D&D campaign. you build your own characters and then play through their story over the course of decades. This continues on to their children as after every chapter the game moves on around 10 years, so eventually your character is going to retire, one way or the other... because characters can die. but you have options. you can have them die and do massive damage as their last act, or you can have them live, but it'll maim them in some way. The first battle I played one of my characters went to 0 hp and instead of having them die I maimed them, which meant that she lost a hand and therefore couldn't equip a shield. It's things like this that make this game really cool and made me want to keep playing. Plus all the cool random events that can change your character in some way. Both for good or ill.

  • I think this would be higher if they'd included co-op out of the gate. As such I've not touched the single player to this so this is purely down to the multiplayer. And it's easily the most fun I've had in a halo multiplayer since Halo 2. Not really much more to say than that, if you like halo multiplayer, this is free so give it a shot.

  • The best Metroidvania to come out this year (Fight me John). The game is trying to do something new within the confines of the genre and I think it does pull it off. You are playing a game about time, and everyone in the game is running out of it. everyone you encounter has only hours left to live before they turn into a mindless robot called an unsighted (hence the name) so you have to go through the game quickly enough, while also trying to not die as this will cause time to move forward, causing even less time to save everyone. It's pretty stressful, however you can give yourself way more time in the main menu if you wish. So it's optional thing that I will leave to you to decide. Still on top of this there is a charming story that is trying to say something. If you want to play more metroidvania's, play this for sure.

  • One of my favourite games of all time is Stardew Valley. I rated it highly the year it came out and I've grown to love it more as the years have went on (and Overwatch has become shitter and shitter as the years have passed, then again it comes from a shit developer so it's not surprising). This isn't on the same level of that game, but this games heart is definitely in the same place as Stardew. It replaces the doom and gloom of most modern games for the doom and gloom of modern life, while sprinkling in a delightful amount of charm and wit into it. It does get repetitive fairly quickly on the mechanical side, but the characters and charm continues long into the game. It's not for everyone, but it is for some people, and that included me.
