It's sad to see Tale of Tales go, but I have to admit that I've never really found any of their games particularly engaging except maybe Fatale. It's a walking simulator that really succeeds at creating the space to which it's paying homage.
With that said, though, I think the lack of any sort of engaging gameplay is a big reason why the company ended up where it did. Tax credits aside, I'd point to Icepick Lodge as an example of an arthouse indy studio that has managed to skirt on by.
The company designs its mechanics around the weird, eastern European symbolism that has me really excited for the successfully-crowdfunded remake of Pathologic.
