This was the only year where I didn't listen to the entirety of the deliberations. I felt like the same arguments were being made over and over and over and over and over and over again.
I think one of the reasons it felt like that is because a lot of the categories were very similar in vein. Best story, best new character, best cast of characters, best world, etc. all kinda had the same games with the same arguments. They were discussing ad nauseum over the plot points of Wolfestein, Dream Daddy, NieR, Night in the Woods, and a handful of others. I felt like the discussions this year felt somewhat repetitive. Also, Cuphead for BOTH best looking game and best style? You've already honored that game for looking downright amazing (which it is), but honoring other games for what they do well is just as important.
I think in past years, a wider breadth of games were discussed. One of the best parts of these deliberations is that I find myself buying a lot of games that I want to check out. That's why I bought Oxenfree, and hackmud, and Superhot, and Soma...the list goes on and on. This year, I was reminded that, yes, Wolfenstein is good, Dream Daddy is very good, and that Cuphead looks good. I think next year having more diverse categories would be immensely beneficial.
