Best of the rest in 2010

The following games just missed out on my top 10 games of 2010 (Best of 2010), but they are still some of the best titles of the year.

List items

  • Surprisingly rich and detailed pinball, with ingenious tables. Great value for money.

  • Combines the drift-heavy action of Out Run with the elements of traditional cart racers to create a thrilling and energetic racer. Throw in tonnes of SEGA charm, and you have a winner. I loved it.

  • Astonishingly good single player shooter and a superbly re-imagined story. The 4 player split screen multiplayer get's the tone of Goldeneye 64 spot on, whilst using modern controls and sensibilities. It's completed with a David Arnold original soundtrack too. Brilliant!

  • The much maligned series comes back with a gritty art style and a filthy look at Shanghai's under-belly. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • My initial negative reaction to the pretentiousness of Limbo has now given way to appreciation of its minimalist approach. I still don't think it was the best game of 2010, but it is certainly one of the most unique.

  • Better in every way to the original DJ Hero, it's just a shame that a broken deck has prevented me from enjoying it more.

  • With fantastic 360 and iPad versions, and a shed-load of extra modes and content, Plants vs Zombies just keeps getting better, and better.

  • It might not be as sophisticated as a first impressions would have you believe, but it is still the best use of Kinect to date and the best Dance game of all time.

  • A total time sink, and a commuters dream. I've played this for hours on end, with my Ninja Wrestling game garnering top honours ;) A great little strategy game that harks back to the mighty Rock Star Ate My Hamster,

  • PSN's best game this year. Forgiving yet very challenging, Joe Danger is an excellent example of what a great downloadable game should be. Trials HD Stunts x Humour = Win!

  • EA could have just played it safe with the RISK license, but instead they came up with a great console version complete with smaller maps, crazy characters and special rules. All perfectly implemented.

  • My favourite XBL Indie game this year. This no-fail Shoot-em-Up has layers of depth and a visual story that adapts the better you play the game.

  • The DS had a tough year, but this gorgeous little Tower-Defence game was the pick of DSIWare. Wonderful to look at and well balanced TD gameplay. Perfect.

  • Perhaps not quite as good as the Civ IV series with all the expansions, but still a cracking strategy game. The only letdown being the rather high technical specs required.

  • Harmonix made a number of really bad design decisions that make Rock Band 3 far too difficult to initially get into. The semi-inclusion of Keyboard support and backward compatibility issues mar what should be the pinnacle of the series. Very good, and the Keytar is ace, but Lego RockBand did it better.

  • I struggled to really get into Enslaved, but there is no denying it looks great and the inter-play between Money & Trip is very well written & acted. It's just a same it feels a bit repetitive and a little play-by-wire; perhaps too similar to the hideous Prince of Persia (2008) reboot.
