DOA2 is one of the fighting games I've spent the most time with thanks to the dearth of early PS2 software so seeing it get short shrift here is painful for me. So many cool things about that game and this version in particular that it's a shame their lack of familiarity hinders it so. Of the games they've played DOA2 is easily a top ten game (probably not overall but eh). And I think it's also a great place for newbies to the series to jump in because it's before the counters got much harder to pull off. Ah well. This series is so much about the journey.
@trenteaston: An interesting chart, but "bust" measurement is actually insufficient to determine the size of the bosom. You touch on this a bit in your explanation, but "bust" is really just the measurement around the chest, all inclusive. If a woman is bigger in frame her "bust" number is going to be high even if she has small breasts. As a scientist, I must suggest you need to work on your methodology.
Just had to check in to see if the game I thought won won, and since it did I can relax and just get to these pods after I finish Odyssey and Nier. Probably good outside of that, though I may have to stop if Jason makes an impassioned plea for Nioh but outside of those two I've beaten everything I care about spoilers for I think. It's a disappointing choice, but reading the staff lists and seeing neither BotW or Odyssey at the top of many meant the writing was on the wall. And while I'm sure I'll (semi-)rage when I actually listen to them a few months from now, honestly just listening to all the debate means more than what actually wins for me, so eh.
Also, I kinda laugh at people who were surprised Dream Daddy made the list. They were always going to give Abby that. Clear from the Beastcast weeks ago. Only shred of doubt was removed from my mind once Vinny put it on his list. I hope they made good arguments for it at least though.
I think this quick look actually made me MORE conflicted. I feel like I could get into and really enjoy the gameplay loop, but that part in the middle where he can't do anything because of a guy stalking him around that it maybe does no good to kill was bad. If there's more like that in the game.....
@drekly: Nintendo published 28 games this year and thirty last year. They produce a lot more than just Mario and Zelda. It's just that since they're basically the only people putting games out for their systems, there's still kind of a drought.
The Name isn't dumb! The sticks are offset! Pro Controller looks good! They even justified the weird detachable controllers kind of. Pretty great box idea.
Price is a little concerning. Unless they take a hit probably looking at $400. Power is at least PS4 Xbox One level (given its playing Definitive edition), but a portable form factor eats into any gains in pricing the three extra years gets them. That's not a bad price considering what it is, but it is a hard price for selling to parents, and the more casual gamer can pick up a PS4 and Xbox One for less. Nintendo has to get the press on board to this thing quick so they can build hype. And hopefully they've built better third party relationships so they don't get dumped at the first whisper of trouble.
I will say though, I don't expect many non-Nintendo games to support the individual stick multiplayer feature. It's a neat idea, but I just don't think they can be bothered to put in the effort.
I don't know if they'll see this, but someone in chat next time tell them to go get the spirit orb from the marble area so they can actually see the damage numbers on every weapon they're using. Driving me crazy they're this deep in and haven't gotten it yet. I got it early in the game and drove me a little crazy just waiting as long as I did.
Somehow this is both expected and disappointing. Sticker Star I eventually managed to trick myself into enjoying by re-configuring my expectations about combat and what it all meant, transforming the enemies that I saw from resources and fun opportunities for combat into just obstacles that needed to be avoided as much as possible, but this wasn't a lot of help. Dan's review makes it seem like this is worse.
Paper Mario is perhaps Nintendo's most baffling series. After making two genuinely amazing and well-received games, they decided to completely pitch everything out and turn it into something completely different for no real reason. Especially with the dearth of turn-based RPGs in the world now, I would LOVE two RPG series from Nintendo. If they're going to keep going in this weird direction though, I'd rather they just kill the series and save us from getting hopeful again.
