GOTY 2014 (games that I liked and you should play)

I like games. I like good games more. Here are the games of 2014 that I liked the best.

All games played on either a PS4 or a PC, because that is what I have.

List items

  • I thought the original Binding of Issac was okay. It was cool, but sort of weird. Rebirth is....it's just so good. The items combine in logical, interesting ways that snowball out of control and can make you a total powerhouse, or a useless nothing. It's a game I've played every day since it came out, more hours logged than any other game, and it came out like..2 weeks ago as of this post (80 hours logged at the moment).

It's everything I love about rogue-likes and dungeon crawlers and video games and you should play it because it's great and only like, 15 bucks.

I'll be playing it longer than any other game this year, or many other years.

  • Inquisition wasn't on my radar at all until reviews hit. It looked pretty good, so I picked it up and it has rivaled Mass Effect 2 in terms of my connection to these characters. I feel a sense of true brotherhood with my team, which is quite a feat for piles of polygons.

It's well written, the exploration is great, the crafting system is really smart, and even though I'm only 20 hours in, it's becoming one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It made me care about Dragon Age, which I did not give a shit about at all before. Best big budget game this year.

  • The first grunt who killed me came back as one of my final bosses, after we had killed eachother half a dozen times in between. What a fantastic series of moments the Nemesis System provided me during my time with this game. An absolute must-play.

  • SuperGiant followed Bastion with the incredibly stylish Transistor, and while I wasn't a huge fan of it doing the same "here's a narrator talking you through it" again, it was a great experience and has one of the best soundtracks of all time.

  • As a fan of the show, I was really worried that this game would be bad. Thankfully, it was an incredibly fun, hilarious RPG that did the source material justice and was also a solid video game. It also has the distinction of being the game that my girlfriend played through 3 times in 30 days. Still not sure why she did that, but there ya go.

  • A rhythm-based rogue-like is a hell of a pitch, and NecroDancer knocks it out of the park. Also, it has the best shop owner since Resident Evil 4.

  • I love Borderlands. Borderlands the dumb name 2014 is another Borderlands game, and I continue to love it. It keeps the formula fresh by being on the moon and adding a few new weapon types, and it helps that the story is actually pretty good this time.

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is my jam, the Skate series is fantastic, and OlliOlli is a game worthy of sharing that company. It's fast, tight, and everything you'd want from a skating game. Also, it's got a hell of a soundtrack.

  • Oh Destiny. You had me for longer than I'd like to admit. The Alpha had me hooked, and it took getting a character to 29 to make me realize that I had overstayed my welcome on the big circle thing. Still, my (considerable) time spent shooting the Not-Covenant with friends will be remembered fondly.

  • Massive Chalice is incredible. X-COM through the focus of Brad Muir is as delightful as you could imagine. Turn based combat fought with your chosen bloodlines, battling through centuries of evil together. It's epic and intimate simultaneously, and is only at number 10 because it's technically still in beta.

I really need to give Isaac a second shake. I made a few runs and I didn't fall in love with it, but then again I haven't had much Vita time lately (I got two kiddos to chase after). With that said, I tend to agree with some of the GB staff though in that the game is almost too obscure with the items, shops etc. Then again, I felt the same way about Spelunky at first and it is now one of my favorite games ever.

Totally agree with you on Rebirth. It was my most anticipated game of the year, and has not disappointed me so far. It has occasionally angered me, but that's due to the luck based nature of the game.

This is a great list that I can identify with.

Still settling on mine but if I pick Isaac as #1 (which I may do) then I'll have chosen a Vita game as GotY for the second year running. Both on slight technicalities - Persona 4 Golden got in last year because that's when it released in EU, and while I have Isaac on three platforms I've ended up playing it most on Vita because it's most convenient and a great pick-up-and-play game.
