Okay, firstly, what? ComicVine is awesome. Secondly, AnimeVice has no staff, it's run by freelancers. I love it when people who play video games call comic book fans nerds. "
I have never ever in all my years ever heard any video game website argue about whether Masterchief would beat Link in a fight. Nor have I seen the same even come from a message board. There are console wars I guess, but those people are called out on being idiots for doing things like that.

Also, I like that you assume that I don't read comic books, I'm guessing you also assume I don't watch anime. I watch lots of anime, I read comic books. I am not outside of the market of any of these websites. I am going on my impressions based on what I've seen. Anime Vice is indeed a decent site, but it's still solely freelancers, that holds it back.

And I'm not basing my impressions on some stereotype or prejudice. They were on BLLSL and what did they do? They argued about which comic book character would beat the other. The match ups didn't even seem to have any rhyme or reason to them. Why couldn't they have reviewed a comic book, or talked about what they were excited about, or... anything that amounted to more than nerds arguing?

Anyway, I'll be the first to promise that I will not bitch about whatever the subscribers get as long as it doesn't take away from anything else on the site. Though fuck you very much guy who said everyone would bitch anyway. People with your attitude are the reason it's so hard to tell companies when they've fucked up. Because there's usually some blithering shit head who acts like you do. Luckily Whiskey Media is clearly above that.

The first 5000 subscribers should all get a "defenders of the bombcast" medal or something.

Except it is. Not all of it is legal, but nearly everything on the internet is free. Even the bombcast if split will be able to be found on the internet intact for free.

What do you think this means?

That's a pretty generous deadline by the way. My best guess is that they saw the fan reaction and are trying their damnedest to go back on it without alienating the people that did subscribe. If they just reneged all the members would feel like they were tricked into becoming members. By setting up some goal the members can feel like they as a group helped preserve the bombcast for the rest of the community. It's the smartest way they could handle the situation they are currently in.

Also the "working for you" bit is pretty smart spin. It very much puts forth the view that A) they are going to tailor all their content to what the fans want and B) it ever so subtly makes you feel more involved.

I'm not liking these medals though, it could very easily become a classist board where people that subscribed see themselves as being above those that don't. It sounds silly, but it's very easy for any group to split into factions where clear differences are made.

Not yet, if they did I'm sure you'd hear about it.

Easily one of my favourite games. Too bad how much the series has fallen off lately.

Anyway, about this whole thing. There are a lot of harsh realities to it. Giant Bomb is a business and making money on the internet is difficult. So I'm sure at the very least they think this is the only way to accomplish that and avoid being at the whim of their advertisers. But there are certain realities that their defenders have to realize as well. As a customer (and we are their customers) in return for our loyalty to them by consuming their content and evangelizing their site to everyone there is some expectations that come with that. It's not that the people that are against this are childish or have a false sense of entitlement, it's simply that for them something they support and enjoy is changing in a way that makes them enjoy it less.

I can't see how any rational person wouldn't be able to empathize with that. If I was Giant Bomb I'd have slowly trimmed it down to an hour, than offered this solution. Than the perception would be "oh thanks to memberships it's 2 hours again!" That's most likely just a downside of them being down to earth honest people, they didn't take that into account. Remember we're talking about perception here, it doesn't adhere to rationality.

A faggot is a term for kindling, also a type of meatball. It can be used as a slang term derogatory to gays or just as a general insult. It's also used as slang for a cigarette. It's just like bitch, ass, etc. If he says he's not using it to denigrate homosexuals then he isn't.
