It does make more sense to do the thing in January (for many reasons, like you mentioned) but I sure do like watching the videos and reading the guest lists as part of the festive mood of December. Well, at least we're still getting it.
Am I missing something or did they decide not to go through with the discussions this year? We're halfway through December and I can't even find a schedule for it on the website. Would be a real bummer if it's indeed the case, the holidays won't feel the same to me.
I must add that I do realize my list has no chance of winning the thing, I just put my personal list in the competition. But the game with the least resistance is, weirdly enough, Monster Hunter. I would not be surprised if it made top 3. Jason is crazy about it, Jeff (!) played a ton of it, etc.
For a year with so many highly anticipated games, I think 2018 was a bit of a disappointment for me. 2015, 16 and 17 were better for the media in my opinion.
- Lots of people didn't like RDR2, arguably the most anticipated game of the generation (or maybe it just didn't live up to the impossible expectations).
- Spider-Man had very derivative side content for my tastes.
- God of War, though really impressive in terms of polish and visuals, had me wondering what got people so over the moon with it (I played it in August, after the hype had cooled down).
The very fact that a Tetris game and a Dragon Ball game are mentioned so frequently in the GOTY conversations is a testament to how weird this year was in the end (don't get me wrong, they are both great games, it's just that they came sort of out of nowhere). That's why my GOTY was Yakuza 6 (which isn't even the best Yakuza game I've played in the past 2 years). It's simply put the most fun I've had with a videogame in 2018.
1. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 3: Marvel's Spider-Man 4. Yakuza Kiwami 2 5. God of War 6. Celeste 7. Dragon Quest XI 8. Soul Calibur VI
@tom_omb: Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are widely regarded as some of the best games in the series. I have not played either but it is the first time I've seen them called a disappointment.
Master System: California Games Mega Drive: Revenge of Shinobi Game Boy: TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan Dreamcast: Metropolis Street Racer Xbox: Project Gotham Racing 2 Xbox 360: Red Dead Redemption PS4: Yakuza 0 (or Persona 5. or The Witness. or Bloodborne.) PC: Simcity 4
How impenetrable Nioh is outside of the actual gameplay. Everything is more complicated than it should be, from forging to learning techniques. Hell, even comparing two pieces of gear and figuring out which one is the best is hard.
