So, I'll start this with a (probably mangled) quote from Louis CK, "Everything is awesome and nobody is happy."

When I look at people on Reddit getting up in arms over DLC, DRM, and certain Bioware writers, it seems like every week there's a different cause to get behind and grab our pitchforks to be mad about.

Do I think that sometimes companies take advantage of consumers? Sure, they do and that's not cool. But I'm also well aware that running a business is hard and expensive and making games is really complicated. Sure, they cost a decent amount of money, but that's because dozens if not hundreds of developers, artists and support staff are needed to put together a game.

I guess what bothers me though is that there's a feeling that you're entitled that games be exactly what you want and this pervasive attitude that gaming is always in some sort of decline and it was always better "back in the day."

I mean, we live in a world where thousands of awesome games are available for download at pretty affordable prices, where practically every month a AAA game or two comes out that is at least good if not great while a really cool indie scene has taken root and is allowing for some amazing expressions of creativity.

To pull an example from another medium, I think Two and a Half Men is a terrible TV show and it really sucks that Jon Cryer keeps getting awards and CBS is throwing their money behind it. But that doesn't mean I don't think we're living in a golden age of TV with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, etc.

Sure, it would be nice if every game included everything we wanted at all times, but you know what, I'm willing to bet that if you played Mass Effect 3 and didn't know about the DLC controversy or the uproar about the gaming preferences of one of the writers, you'd probably at the very least say "Hey, that was kind of fun and worth my time."

This might be a bit of a rambling rant, but I just want people to keep it all in perspective - we're living in a really fun and interesting time for games, and yeah, games are a big business and sometimes businesses have to make decisions that piss off people, but that doesn't mean that it's all going to shit.

While there's always valid complaints between the mess, I can't help but wonder if the people screaming the loudest actually put any real time into a game.
Like with big releases everyone's on a forum telling everyone else how good/bad it is instead of actually playing it.

I cant agree more. Video games used to be about fun above all else but too many of these younger gamers have no idea what fun actually is anymore.

Yes, I feel the same way. Its a pointless argument to have to begin with because every game can be enjoyed by at least someone. People should spend more time looking for that game that they will enjoy and less slagging off the ones that they wont(or lie and say they wont but buy it anyways).

yep people want to be first to the attention party which means they are most likely least well informed on the issue.

The dlc content prepackaging has only gotten worse and worse. Should people only be allowed to complain when you decide it has gotten bad enough?

meh. Entitlement of the consumer makes no difference to the industry. Sales determines all. A sale to a grumbling hissy fit throwing consumer counts the same as a sale to an elated super fan. If Bioware's games are being developed out of touch with demand, their sales will dip and they will have to adjust accordingly. The frustrating thing about this is that the more Bioware attempts to pander to consumers, the more animosity they draw. All people are really asking from them is some integrity to their own vision. It's when they try to develop specifically to draw sales from a section of consumers that wouldn't ordinarily be interested in their games that they run into trouble.

But again, sales will hash all of that out in the end.

If anyone here has seen the video on the Mass Effect thing, which this is obviously aimed at, then they know all my opinions on it. It's an ugly business practice from EA and no one should condone it.

Things cost money and people who pay money for those things have a right to complain. Even when they don't or do pay. This capitalism. Louis C.K. is corporate troll who started out public speaking for corporations and now defends poor service (so what if I plane is late? It's a SEAT in the AIR!) so he makes money out of people who are equally accepting of poor customer service because they either don't care or care but are too lazy or too timid to complain. This conversation is about things that cost money, not about mosquitoes and bad weather.

You don't get it. Even Louis C.K., doesn't take his joke as seriously as you think. After all, he's a comedian, and there is no reason to think he feels so strongly when people complain about certain luxuries. In fact, I have heard him myself complain about poor services that anyone could take for granted. It was a joke. Calm down.
