Several thousand years before the beginning of the game, miasma began to infect Auldrant, killing many people. It was during this time that Yulia Jue formed a pact with Lorelei, resulting in the Score. She then created a plan known as the Float Project, to raise the crust of the planet and support it atop the Sephiroth, saving the world from the miasma. The plan succeeded, and the Qliphoth is now little more than a sea of miasma, with Yulia City the only major landmark.
Over the course of the game, the Outer Lands are eventually lowered and come to rest atop the miasma in the Qliphoth, sealing it in place.
