Rage is cheap, which version do I buy?

#1 Posted by Atary77 (481 posts) - 1 year, 11 days ago

Like the title suggest the game is really cheap no matter where you go and given Brad's review I figured I'd give this game a try for myself. However after all these months after it's release where bug fixes and patches have most likely been released, which version do you folks recommend I buy this for? PC, PS3, or 360?

The 360 version is the only one I'm kinda leery of because of the disc swapping thing and I'm not sure if the errors Brad mentioned in his review are still present here. I know he also mentioned the PS3 and PC versions having some quirks as well. But have those bugs been hammered out? Or are there still technical issues with the game no matter what you play it on?

Thanks for the advice folks.

PC is the version to buy. The biggest issues with the PC version at launch were related to ATI drivers hating OpenGL. I had no driver problems at launch with Nvidia. New drivers have been released and the game's been patched.

@cuirass: I thought the PC version had a universal problem of constant texture pop-ins, was it fixed?

The cynic in me wants to tell you to get the X360 version cause id is a sexbox developer now (lolol) but yeah if the PC version was fixed, it's technically the default best version of a game. (Unless it's broken).
You know, the usual deal: Fastest loading times, tastiest graphical output and options, mouse and keyboard AND controller (and joysticks and wii motes), mods and fan made patches, etc.

@AhmadMetallic: Enabling the GPU transcoding option significantly improves texture pop-in. Many users also tweaked cvars to better-than-default values and I believe I read that id patched some of the new values in as default.

Rage really isn't worth buying duder.

@Atary77:

I only played it on the 360 but I thought it was a really good version of the game. If you have a PC that is good enough to play the game at really high settings though I would probably go with the PC version because it will more then likely look better.

The PC version took a lot of tweaking and fixing to get working right, but once you get through that phase it works totally fine and is probably the best version to play. Also bear in mind that I was on an ATI card, which had loads of driver issues that I believe were fixed. It probably works way better now.

I had a fine experience with it on 360, but if the PC versions problems have been fixed then I would go with that at this point.

Unfortunately, the texture pop in will always be there. I played it on the Xbox 360 and I had no issues with it, except a crash on save.

Pc, its a fps after all. Their are ways to edit the ini in that version to completely remove texture pop ins, and unlock high quality texture's. I would definitely recommend this game by the way, it doesn't have a lot to it story wise. But the shooting it self is very fun and satisfying. And the atmosphere + graphic's are top notch..

The bug where the game would crash and return to the dashboard on the Xbox when you switched DVD's has been fixed. However, disc swappnig is still a pain when you want to go back and finish some side stuff in the first area.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I may get the PC version but I'll keep consideration open for the 360 version

None of them, just because a game is cheap doesn't mean you have to buy it. Especially not bad games.

You can't honestly say Rage was 'bad' can you? Really? I mean it isn't a great game. But 'bad' implies a lot.

I thought it was pretty bad.

PC version is going to be the standard answer you get. If you don't get the PC version I'd go with 360 as PS3 has more texture pop in problems. Unless the multi disc thing is a bigger turn off for you.

I guess when I think bad I think unplayable or just excessively terrible in some extraordinary way. Like these games...

That wasn't a problem with the game, it was a problem with ATI and their shit LOD hacks because they can't write a decent OpenGL driver. It's been patched in subsequent drivers.

I played about an hour of Rage and was bored to tears. For a game from the guys that pioneered the genre, the shooting feels lifeless.

#21 Posted by sins_of_mosin (1472 posts) - 1 year, 10 days ago

Eh, I wouldn't really recommend playing the game.  Its pretty bad as a FPS and there are several games that are much better.

#22 Posted by BrockNRolla (1698 posts) - 1 year, 10 days ago

Doesn't matter. Any version will disappoint you in the end.

While I agree that you shouldn't buy every game that goes on sale, the whole "bad" thing varies from one person to another. A lot of people consider Mirror's Edge bad yet it's a great game (IMO), a lot of people consider Bioshock a great game yet I consider it shit, so every gamer IMO should experiment on their own and see what they like and dislike.

How cheap is it? If I had my time back I wouldn't have payed any more than 20 bucks for it.

@Atary77: Rage is cheap.

But forgiveness is free.

I guess we both have different definitions of what bad means and what it implies.

The texture pop-in is not that bothersome on the PC. If you're going to download it on a slow connection or are low on hard drive space be warned it's twenty-one gigabytes.

#28 Posted by RainDog505 (71 posts) - 1 year, 10 days ago

I have an ATI/AMD gaming rig and currently experience next to no graphic glitches in Rage. During the first week, I did have some troubles with bizarre pop-in and flickering characters. This was patched out by the tenth day of release.

If you have a PC that can push past the recommended hardware...get that version for all the obvious reasons (Higher resolution, keyboard/mouse, and Steamworks).
