    Release Upgrade

    Concept »

An upgrade, in video games, is a practice in which a new release of a game built on the same engine with the same mechanics is produced, but does not completely qualify for a sequel. However, the content difference is significant enough that it is not considered a re-release, either.

    Short summary describing this concept.

In some cases, an upgraded game may advance the story of the previous game slightly, or offer alternative points to the story. Very often, an upgraded game is released on more or different platforms than its previous incarnation.

The concept is extremely prolific in fighting games, especially those released prior to the mainstream introduction of downloadable content.
