Driveclub Review

2
  • PS4

Driveclub looks nice and has a couple of good ideas about handling leaderboard challenges, but the core of it--actually driving a car--drags the entire thing down.

Driveclub looks nice, but doesn't have a ton of options.
Driveclub looks nice, but doesn't have a ton of options.

Driveclub is a very rigid driving game, where the only tweakable gameplay option at your disposal is a choice between automatic and manual transmission. In an era where driving games on both ends of the arcade-to-simulation spectrum deliver car upgrades and a lot of other things that players can use to tailor the experience to their liking, Driveclub's complete lack of meaningful choices makes it feel like a weird throwback to the old, dark days of console driving games. The larger problem, however, is that the game's overly mechanical AI drivers and weirdly grippy car handling make the on-track action lackluster, at best.

The action in Driveclub is broken up into a small handful of events that you can play a couple of different ways. In the single event mode you can set up on any of the game's tracks using any of your unlocked cars in a simple race, a time trial that lets you race as long as you like to set the hottest lap you can, and a drift challenge that scores you based on your speed through the straightaways and your drifts on the curves. If you like, you can have those events fed to you in a more-or-less set order via the game's tour mode, which sets up specific events and classes while also adding some occasional side objectives that earn you stars. Stars are used in the tour mode to unlock additional events in the tour mode.

As you race in any event, you'll earn experience points depending on how you drive. Earning stars in tour mode is a solid way to earn them, but doing things like drafting behind an opposing car, drifting, and clean passes will also add to your total. You lose points for leaving the track, colliding with other cars, and the total at the end of a race is added to your overall score. You'll level up along the way, which is how additional cars are unlocked. The car options are weak, with an almost-exclusive focus on European manufacturers. The developers have plans to sell car DLC, so perhaps this will eventually get addressed, but launching without big names like Honda, Nissan, Toyota, or Ford? It seems almost insane. On top of that, you can't do much with the cars once you've unlocked them. There are no tuning or upgrade options and, aside from a loosely customizable "club" paint job set by the leader of your current car club, even the paint options are extremely limited. Even the "factory" paint job option only offers one color. At some point Driveclub's lack of options crosses out of barebones and into simply appearing to be unfinished. Furthermore, the idea of a set progression of car unlocks instead of offering some way for players to unlock the cars they're specifically interested in feels old and somewhat restrictive for a game that seems like it's trying to lean in the simulation direction of things.

The challenge system is one of Driveclub's high points.
The challenge system is one of Driveclub's high points.

But it's worth pointing out that Driveclub isn't an especially realistic simulation of driving, and apparently that's by design. The cars have an overly grippy feel on the track, letting you get away with some occasional shenanigans by braking at the last possible moment instead of gently braking or coasting into the curves. The developers claim this is an attempt to make the game easier and fun for everyone. But this doesn't make the game feel more fun or thrilling. It just makes what otherwise feels like an attempt at simulating real cars instead feel like it misses the mark by a mile. If this were on by default as an assist for new drivers that could be disabled, potentially along with a series of additional options to let people tailor the driving a bit, maybe this would make sense. Instead it makes the game feel inauthentic to real-life racing while also not going far enough in the "fun" direction to make it an exciting, arcade-style racer.

It gets even weirder when you throw in the game's occasional attempt at enforcing rules. It'll let you brake extremely late into turns and you can pull e-brake drifts and such, but if you get off the track at all it immediately throws up a three-second timer that compels you to get back on the track. If you cut a corner in a way the game feels is giving you an advantage, it gives you a "corner penalty" and reduces your ability to accelerate for a few seconds. Same deal if you decide to slam into another racer--or if the game's single-minded AI decides to slam into you. Though cutting corners isn't cool, the way the game handles it with penalties is the opposite of fun. This seems like the sort of thing that should have been handled on the track design end instead of slapping drivers with penalties.

The game has a proper multiplayer option in addition to the single events and tour, and this allows up to 12 players to compete. The menus are slightly confusing, with a series of choices that don't seem especially different, since the game moves you from one event to the next and one car class to the next as you finish one event and start another, but the online portion of the game is certainly functional. Considering the game's focus on creating groups of users via its club functions, it seems odd that there isn't a big focus on clubs in the multiplayer. It's just a never-ending hopper filled with one-off races. It's worth noting though, that on launch day, and as of this writing, the Driveclub servers have been offline, preventing players from competing against one-another directly or via leaderboard challenges. Without these features, Driveclub feels like even more of a husk, but one has to expect that these servers will work eventually. They worked just fine during the week prior to release.

Your car customization options consist of basic paint style changes and putting numbers and accolade icons on the side.
Your car customization options consist of basic paint style changes and putting numbers and accolade icons on the side.

If there's anything Driveclub can hang its hat on, its that it's a nice-looking game and that it does leaderboards well. Of particular note is the game's day/night cycle, which you can speed up if you want to see the passage of time happen in a more dramatic way. Driveclub's night driving showcases its pretty lighting quite well, though considering you're trying to set good times and win races, I found myself gravitating towards having all my races take place at noon once I had seen the night stuff a few times. Cars shine nicely, again showing off the way light hits them, and it all looks quite striking when you hit dusk. That said, sometimes the ground and wall textures look overly flat and undetailed, and you'll see some scenery pop into view as you get closer to it. Nothing major, it looks good.

The leaderboards in Driveclub are supplemented by a challenge system that lets you take any of your recent past performances and send the time around to your friends. You set a time to respond when sending a challenge, so you can give those friends (or, if your challenge is open, strangers) a few as 30 minutes or as long as a week to respond. The winner of the challenge gets more XP and the prizes increase as more players join a challenge. This also carries over to clubs. Car clubs in Driveclub can be open or invite-only, and clubs are ranked on leaderboards, as well. You can create club challenges to challenge other clubs to beat your performance, and this makes it so each club only gets one entry on the leaderboard. So you can put your entire club onto one challenge and have them all bang away at it in an attempt to win, if you like. Annoyingly, people can send you challenges for cars you haven't unlocked yet, but all in all it's a decent system that would be a lot more useful if it were in a better game.

And, ultimately, that's the real problem with Driveclub. It's a shame that there aren't more options to choose from and the challenge system has potential. But it just isn't much fun to play. The core act of driving a car feels off in a way that completely put me off of playing the game. Without that in place, the rest of it just falls apart. The PlayStation 4 has been without a serious racing option since launch, and Driveclub doesn't fill that gap.

The reviews of this game seem a little all over the place when looking at the neogaf review thread. I'm surprised the comments thus far are just writing this game off, just because Jeff has some strong personal feelings against how it "feels".

See the quick look comments for more on this - Jeff is just a downer on this game...

@jeff I don't think I saw anything mentioned about a damage model in the QL or here. Is there one? Is it any good?

Also would've been interesting to note that the great looking rain weather is not in at the time of launch? Saw someone mention it's expected in December hopefully? All news too me.

Waiting on the PS+ version but so far it's not looking like I'll buy this.

That's a bummer. I'm still going to try the free version (if they ever actually put it up), but I probably won't even play much of that. Oh well! At least it'll serve as a "hey look at this pretty game" for if someone is at my house that doesn't play a lot of games.

Disappointing. The four Q4 racing games are 1 for 2 so far. Hopefully Project Cars and the Crew will make it 3 for 4.

I seriously do not know why that console is even selling, the Wii U and Xbox One have WAY better exclusives, I haven't touched my PS4 since last year....

Don't really understand why people are saying the reviews are "all over the place"

They aren't.

The only high review from a large site is Gametrailers and they gave it an 8.6

The next highest from a large site is IGN with a 7.9

Every other well known video games site gave it a low score.

Destructoid - 7.5

Polygon - 7.5

Joystiq - 60

Eurogamer - 60

Gamespot - 50

GB - 2/5

The reviews are not all over the place. The average Sony fan (especially the neogaf crowd) tends to think anything and everything that is PS exclusive is the best thing ever. Somehow the majority of reviewers just don't get it.

I'm all for people enjoying games, but sticking your head in the sand and screaming every time a PS exclusive doesn't score well isn't about liking games. It's about denial.

That whole paragraph about penalizing the driver for cutting a corner, or even slightly going off the track, gives me the impression of taking a driver's license test. "You screwed up at this part, minus 2 points. And you hit the curb here, minus 1 point."

I do agree the lack of other large car manufacturers is alarming. I'm not sure how licensing works between games for certain cars but it seems like there was some issue in negotiations? And having to unlock what few cars there are is a horrible design choice IMO. That's one reason I stopped playing Gran Turismo and switched to Forza.

After reading this review, and others, and watching the Quick Look, along with the PS+ version nowhere to be found (or reported or commented on by anyone at this point) I won't be purchasing this game. But I will play the PS+ version when it's released to see if playing it will change my mind.

I'm having a great time with it. I do feel like they completely misrepresented it; to me it feels more like a second coming of ridge racer than anything else. I love the driving feel, the stripped down rules, the simplicity of just choosing a race and going, the lack of rewind, etc. It's like a next-gen throwback. So if you happen to be me, I guess, you'll love it.

how it feels is quite important though. I have similar feelings about car handling and feel when it comes to racing games so if Jeff's opinions aren't great on this then I can't see myself enjoying how the cars would feel while playing it.

Why are people taking taking Jeff's word as the be all end all? It's a fun game in the vein of PGR and Grid. Not the best of the genre but not 40/100 by any stretch of the imagination. By all means, people should at least try the free version and make up their own mind.

Think people should really give the PS+ demo a go, Jeff's main complaint is with the handling which obviously differs drastically from person to person. I think it feels great and is much more on the arcade side of things while still having a bit of weight to it. Pretty similar to the PGR series. I think the problem might be that some are coming at the angle of it being a simulation focused game, when it's really the exact opposite. Hell, it's a challenge focused game.

If nothing else the game is incredibly atmospheric which is almost weird to say for a racing game. Fog rolls through some levels creating a rather dreary feel while others are sun-bleached, making corners exhilarating to take. You can almost feel the cold in some of the snow levels, really top-notch work and I can't imagine how the game is going to look once the weather system is added.

Favorite part is the day/night cycle though which as far as I can remember as only been done in track based games in GT5/6 so far. Starting out in the early morning as the sun rises blinding you and ending at night where you're going entirely by your headlights is great. Some people think the game is sterile, but the lighting system really makes the game come alive for me.

The tight controls and impressive lighting make playing the game a joy. Really looking forward to the weather system.

I'm not sure why only the "big" sites matter, people are pretty inconsistent about when they do, and don't care about their opinions. It's just a really fun, incredibly gorgeous racer. I game primarily on the PC so I certainly have no Sony bias. Shame Jeff didn't enjoy it, but I and others really are! It's not like 7.5-8 is terrible either, pretty solid scores on average.

I meant in terms of what people expect these days. I don't think 7.5 is a bad score at all, but people these days except 9s for everything. Or an 8 at the very least.

Maybe having Jeff review Forza and Driveclub back to back wasn't the best idea in the world. His main complaint is that he just doesn't like how the cars handle and him having been used to the Forza handling system for however long he's been playing wouldn't have done his impression of Driveclub any favours. Not saying there would be a vast difference in scores but maybe a different set of eyes on this game would have made for a more objective (imo) review.

Wellp I can't say I didn't expect this. I mean I was guessing a 3/5 but after learning more about what the game actually is (and more importantly what it isn't), this doesn't surprise me at all.

Wellp, guess I gotta start saving for an Xbox One to get Forza Horizon 2. Hopefully Project Cars will be good too. Hell, even The Crew might be good (but I doubt it will be even close to burnout/nfs level).

About to? There's been a considerable amount of anger and hatred during the past day or two on the few sites I frequent that started with the GS coverage. And now with GB's QL and review both on the site you're seeing that old chestnut of Jeff being a "Sony hater". Then you have the few that have been spewing vile remarks regarding his appearance.

I'm not a racing guy, so I probably wouldn't have played this even if it had gotten glowing reviews, but some of the responses I've seen have been pretty sad. Hopefully it will all blow over quickly and everyone can move on.. at least until the next big release that gets mixed reviews.

I'm definitely going to try the PS Plus version when it comes out. I've been playing Foraza Horizon for the past few days and I'm really enjoying it. It has some issues here and there, but it's the most fun I've had with a racing game in years. There are so many cars, so many different events, so much content. Driveclub seems to offer so much less. I don't really care if the graphics are incredible if the game itself is mediocre or average.

I'm sorry, but I can't take your word for it. The game has been out for less than a day and people claiming it's some incredible game simply can't be trusted.

You're saying that review sites shouldn't matter, but the opinions of random people on the internet who ran out to buy the game on day one should?

I'm never going to trust someone who rushes out and buys a game on day one and starts going on and on about how amazing it is. People like that almost always love the game they just bought. It's basic human psychology and the weakness of the average person. Very few people and strong enough to admit fault in something they are invested in. Especially people who play games and especially those that have an interest in projecting their love for their platform of choice and its exclusives.

Jeff has always liked racing games and I've trusted his opinion for the most part. Should I trust the guy that has been playing it for a while and has seen everything the game has to offer? Or should I trust the guy that ran out to buy the latest PS4 exclusive, played it for a few hours and is gushing about how incredible it is?

I think I'll go with Jeff.

It boggles my mind how people didn't know this wasn't a simulation game. They presented it as arcade from the start. How Jeff didn't know this i'll never understand.

If you were to read some of those reviews, then compare more than just scores you would see it's all over the place. Half the reviewers hate how it plays, the other half love it. That is pretty all over the place.

Personally I think it all comes down to personal choice/style for something like that. Some control and handling to know what it wants to be, and stick to that. Ergo it either plays like a simulator or it plays like an arcade race. Those people don't like it when something straddles the middle, like it appears DriveClub does. Others may have wanted to get into something a bit more serious than arcade racing but without all the trappings/clippings of a simulation racer. DriveClub seems to offer that, and a certain audience even of reviewers seem to enjoy that. It's like how Jeff brings up a lack of customization options as a negative. He and a lot of other gamers would care severely about tuning every little thing in a car. But some don't actually give two craps. They just want to drive pretty cars and have it feel just rewarding and challenging enough to move on.

The other thing that even the scores themselves differ from, half of the reviewers are recommending people play the game and the other half are not. 2/5, 50, 60, those are generally "competent but you shouldn't play it" reviews. Even look at Jeffs opinion, he does not recommend one picks it up. Yet Destructoid, Polygon, IGN, Gametrailers, they do believe this game has an audience. A principle point of the Quick Look from Jeff was "who was this for?" Meanwhile other critics believe this game does indeed have a niche.

I'd say all that qualifies in spades as game feedback and reviews being all over the place.
