Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse Review

1
  • X360

If you are a fundamentally terrible person on every imaginable level, then Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse is the video game for you.

Great news, racists, misogynists, homophobes, and generally terrible people! After a year in which your kind spent much of its time being maligned by people with annoying traits like "sensitivity" and "empathy," you now have a video game with which to vent your frustrations toward people with handicaps, women, a wide variety of ethnicities, and homosexuals. Finally, right?

"Finally, a game that understands my unique sense of humor!" -- A terrible person playing Back to the Multiverse.

Sure, you get some of that stuff on the Family Guy TV series, but there, Seth MacFarlane's tendency toward offensive humor is too often slathered in that dicey concept known as "parody." Sometimes you just want to laugh at hateful words being used to demean others without all the bullshit, you know?

This is what makes Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse so perfect for the asshole on the go. If you simply don't have the time or mental capacity for "jokes" with "punchlines," then by all means, engage Back to the Multiverse for its liberal use of insults and offensive words for what I can only assume was a half-cocked attempt at shock value. Then again, shock value would also imply that you could actually be shocked by any of this stuff. If anything, the only shocking aspect of Back to the Multiverse is how haphazardly said offensive terms are doled out over the course of the game's brief adventure.

While there is a story in Back to the Multiverse--which features Family Guy stalwarts Stewie and Brian teaming up to save the world from a dimension-hopping villain baby--it largely plays second fiddle to the simple act of running around an environment filled with some minority or another, shooting everything in sight, while frequently repeating lines from the show.

Yes, there is a lot of recycled dialogue in Back to the Multiverse, most of it unremarkable, barely-remembered one-liners from its main characters. You can tell the difference between what's old and what's new by the fact that the old lines occasionally feel like they were part of a larger joke. The new dialogue doesn't even know what a larger joke is. If it takes more than ten seconds to set up, deliver, and forget about, Back to the Multiverse doesn't even bother.

With that said, I don't know that Back to the Multiverse was so much "written" as it was "hastily slapped together," but no matter, because the most important thing is that you're being horrible to those that are probably different from you. The game literally opens with a rapid-fire assault highlighting the grossness of Greek people and the sluttiness (and requisite daddy issues) of sorority chicks, and then dovetails into a lovely little level-length treatise on handicapped people and their terrifying sense of entitlement.

To be fair, not all of Back to the Multiverse is obsessed with calling things queer and the hilariously slutty antics of women. Later in the game, things move into more decidedly bizarre territory, featuring long stretches where you're killing Secret Service agents tasked with protecting Mayor McCheese, and space chickens that behave similarly to the Xenomorphs from Alien. So there's your referential humor, I guess, if that's what you're after.

Regardless of who you're killing for what reason, you will do it with haphazard shooting mechanics that qualify as functional, if utterly uninvolving. There's no real challenge to Back to the Multiverse. You'll die if you get shot up, but unless you've completely run out of the game's collectible currency, you'll always start right back where you got shot. Well, until the last few levels, which inexplicably have a tendency to start you way further back than seems reasonable. But otherwise, you're just running around, blasting wildly until everything's dead.

Some might think that Back to the Multiverse is just emblematic of its source material, but it's not. The TV series looks nuanced, compared to this garbage.
Some might think that Back to the Multiverse is just emblematic of its source material, but it's not. The TV series looks nuanced, compared to this garbage.

Keep in mind that Back to the Multiverse's gameplay design isn't really set up for anything more strategic than that. The mechanics function more like a lousy arena shooter than a typical third-person adventure, so there's a lot of running and shooting, and not much else. If we were talking about a game with a challenge level similar to, say, Serious Sam, that might have worked out better. But Back to the Multiverse isn't interested in challenging you so much as it is killing time until its next offensive one-liner.

This all makes a bit more sense when you try out Back to the Multiverse's barely existent multiplayer. Yes, there's two-player co-op in the campaign, but if your desire to force Back to the Multiverse on people requires more sacrifices, there are offline deathmatch and "capture the greased-up deaf guy" modes to play around with. Incidentally, all relevant humor in the "capture the greased-up deaf guy" mode can be found in the title "capture the greased-up deaf guy," so really, you don't even have to play it to get the joke.

If you're the sort of person who doesn't inherently find the concepts of greased-up deaf people, Amish people commenting on their sex lives, older women grotesquely demanding group sex from frat boys, people in wheelchairs falling over, or "the gays" completely hilarious, do not get angry at Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse. This is not a game that deserves your anger. If it in any way felt deliberate, focused, or frankly invested in its own sense of humor, then maybe it would be deserving of such ire. As it is, Back to the Multiverse is a game that those with any modicum of taste should simply forget ever happened. To attempt to highlight its existence beyond a mere blunt dismissal is to give it entirely too much credit. Which I suppose I just did. Crap.

You know, as much as laughing at or pointing out bad games is important, was it really worth it to commit a review for this game? For the time spent playing and writing about this game, I think I would have much preferred a review of any of the small/indie games that only got a Quick Look on the site. Who else wouldn't have liked a review follow-up for Hell Yeah!, Closure, Snapshot, Karateka, or Retro City Rampage? I feel like Alex's time would have been better served giving him this than reviewing a game that a QL would have immediately made apparent is dog shit.

While I agree with your thought that smaller games should get more attention than these types of bad games, I would argue that reviews are necessary/the way to go with that attention.

I for one find quick looks 100 times more effective at showing me, the general public, if I would like a game or not. I find reviews to be old fashioned to be honest.

Not offense to the editors of this site who are still writing them on weekly basis but you yourselves have invented a better method of game coverage.

You have created the evolution to reviews (aka your amazing quick looks) but for some reason still devote time to this writing-on-stone-tablet, or going to church every Sunday mentality, it's kind of fucked up.

I love reading Alex review the worst games imaginable. It captures everything I enjoy about the dude; his bitter and sassy snark. Keep up the good work, Mr. Navarro.

I think Jeff and the others have stated a few times that they focus more on quicklooks because they are more effective in showing people what the game is and gives some form of context. I think they write reviews because sometimes that's interesting. I doubt anyone coming to this site were gonna go out and buy Blackwater, Family Guy, or that cardboard cut-out guitar game.

Sometimes the show can be funny. The joke tends to be that Peter is an insensitive asshole, and people find it funny because they are laughing at, not with, Peter.

So let me get this straight, you don't like Family Guy, so you've decided you hated this game before you picked it up. You already decided that Family Guy, and apparently anybody who watches it, isn't worth your time, and decided to use this game as a good soap box for your position. Thanks for this absolutely useless contribution to reviews, Alex.

As a gay man who loves gay jokes, amid a mount of other hilariously offensive material, I fucking love Family Guy, and have for the past 12+ years. I find it strange that somebody who associates with people what play Cards Against Humanity and enjoy South Park could be so easily turned off by Family Guy, when neither of those other two properties are any less offensive for the sake of humor. You want to talk about offending gay people as being bad, but Mr. Slave is okay? That's fucking fantastic.

I usually love your stuff, and respect your opinions, but this is just fucking wrong, and the only thing that offends me here isn't Family Guy, it's your assertion that I'm a legitimately worthless person for having different tastes than you. Thanks for that. This is why I can't find myself calling Giant Bomb home anymore. It's constantly an assault on people for being different without any semblance of "for the humor" behind it. Between this and being called insane by Ryan Davis for having another opinion than him, That's it. I'm done with this place.

Best of luck in your future endeavors. You're an excellent writer.

@DrRandle: Once again, you apparently missed the part where I said that I don't think Family Guy is that bad, but that this game isn't even especially representative of that show's humor.

But, again, if you'd like to just go on freaking out over something I specifically contradicted you on in the review text, go for it. No skin off my back.

@Alex:

The part about "Great news, racists, misogynists, homophobes, and generally terrible people! After a year in which your kind spent much of its time being maligned by people with annoying traits like "sensitivity" and "empathy," you now have a video game with which to vent your frustrations toward people with handicaps, women, a wide variety of ethnicities, and homosexuals." then wasn't meant to imply anything about people who like Family Guy? The game itself was written by the writers of Family Guy. This is Seth MacFarlane's crew. By all accounts, if I think Family Guy is funny, I should enjoy the jokes here (unless they're poorly timed because video games, obviously.) I fail to see how there is a separation here, is all.

He's not saying that people who like Family Guy the show are those things, he's saying the people who specifically like Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse and find the humor of the game genuinely hilarious, are those people. If it is written by the Family Guy show people, then they probably didn't realize that those jokes don't translate well into prolonged game format. Perhaps you should play the game before taking offense at Alex's judgement of it?

@DrRandle: No, actually, because plenty of offensive jokes in Family Guy come with some kind of context, or at least sense of parody. As I said in the review, this game offers none of that.

I don't care who wrote it, whoever did apparently didn't give enough of a shit about the show's humor to try and match it up.

I don't watch the show with much regularity these days, but unless in the last year or two it's taken a nosedive into just saying mean-spirited shit for 22 minutes every week and abandoned any sort of coherent plotting or at least joke payoff, then no, this game is not really much like the show. It's just horrendous.

Like you said, I'm certainly not averse to bawdy or offensive humor, but I need a context, some kind of point to it, in order to enjoy it. This game is fucking pointless in its offensiveness.

Actually making a judgement about a person based on one thing that they enjoy is pretty silly obviously. I'm guessing that Alex doesn't truly think that anyone who likes this game is a misogynist, homophobic bigot. It was intended as a joke and a way to illustrate how he felt about the humor in the game. Even if he were talking about people who like Family Guy in general and not just the game, it would still be a ridiculous thing to take offense toward.

@MiniPato: People who like the humor of Back to the Multiverse are likely the people who like the humor of Family Guy, as that was the intent of the game's creation, and I would hazard a guess, the people who are writers for both products. I realize that I am an insanely insecure person here, but I fail to understand any other correlation. There's nothing in Multiverse that will be any different than an unrated episode of Family Guy, so by comparing a person to one, you are comparing them to both.

See, I completely disagree that Quick Looks are enough, far from it. Jeff himself said that QL's can be made when someone just messed with a game for 30 minutes and just wanted to show it off but a review is all about evaluating the full game in context. I agree that QL's are a great way to cover games but as far as knowing whether to buy it or what to even think of it requires a review for me. That a game seems cool has in the past burned me when I thought about a game one way and then the review was much more sour on it (you can see this with teh Ms. Splosion Man QL vs. review). Reading other reviews of these games, I really would have liked where any of the staff landed on this game and why in a review but we dont' have that.

Instead I have a review for a game no one here was ever going to buy except ironically anyway and very few at that. I'm not complaining about this per se but that if we are going to get a review of anything, I'd rather it be games I'm interested in knowing about, not shit like this.

I still haven't seen an episode nor clip of Family Guy since season 3. Is it really the worst thing? I mean, new Simpsons is pretty try-hard and cringe worthy most of the time. Then again, it did reach ten seasons before it headed down that hole.
