THERE IS NO FUCKING SHAPE, EVEN ON 100. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE WORKING AT ALL. *Ahem*

It appears that for some reason I can't see the shape not even a tiny bit while adjusting my brightness setting, yet in other games it works fine. Any idea why this is and how to fix it?

    Thankyou.

Playstation 3 version by the way.

I won't dismiss the possibility that Volition is just screwing with "adjust to see shape" and then not putting actual shape.

Wouldn't people be asking about it already though? No google results come up.

I don't want the game to be too dark. That's why I'm asking about properly adjusting the contrast and brightness.

I have this problem with Uncharted 3. Even when on 100 I don't see everything. weird, becuase on any other game it works fine, but I'm mostly playing on a 360, so it might be console-"issues".

OK, most TVs store different brightness and contrast settings for each input these days. Check if that's the case by fiddling with the settings and changing input, then you'll know if you can happily screw with the settings and only affect your 360.

If your TV has a "Game mode" or "PC mode" enable it. This should disable any picture processing done by your TV which causes lag and usually makes things look worse. If it doesn't have this setting, be sure to disable any enhancements manually. You want your TV to display the data being fed to it, not some filtered version.

If your TV has a backlight level setting, get it displaying a black picture and turn the brightness all the way down, turn the room lights on and adjust the backlight level to a setting just below the point where the black picture starts to brighten. In other words, find the brightest backlight setting where the LCD is still able to block all the light (at least with room lighting - in a dark room you will always see some bleed through with an LCD)

Bring up the 360 dash, and adjust your TV's brightness and contrast to 0. Now adjust the brightness gradually until you don't see any change to the blackest parts of the picture when you adjust it one unit. This sets your black level. Adjust the contrast until you reach a comfortable brightness or you can't see any change to the whitest parts of the picture when you adjust it one unit. This sets your white level, and it's really matter of taste.

If that doesn't fix things, go into the 360's display settings and check your reference levels. There is a lot of mumbo-jumbo floating around about this setting. As far as I can tell Standard is the best setting for HDTVs expecting TV level input, while Expanded is for HDTVs set to "PC mode" or "Game mode". When you change this setting you'll notice your black levels change. Since there's no way for me to tell what your TV expects or what mode it's in, just try both Standard and Expanded with the game.

(A bit of background - the standard luminance range for TV broadcasts is 16 - 235. Any luminance outside that range will be clipped ("crushed") so that it fits in the range. Some TVs can optionally ignore this standard, in which case they behave more like computer monitors and can accept the full 0 - 255 luminance range without clipping. If the TV is expecting TV reference levels and the 360 is sending out "full range" reference levels intended for computer monitors, some of the subtler shades of black/white will be lost).

Hopefully that should be some help.

I should make it clear that even though the games and TVs brightness are maxed out my contrast wasn't so I could see the shape after turning it up, however I want t make sure the game/TV doesn't look crappy or washed out which is why I'm asking for help.

@NekuSakuraba: I'd just play the game at settings that 'look right' to you, then invest in a colour and brightness/contrast blu ray disc, that shows images on your screen and tells you what to adjust so that you can see what it describes. I have one on DVD, I think it's called Video Essentials, and it helped me set my colours, sharpness, brightness and contrast to a level that for a relatively old HDTV made everything look pretty good. It sounds like your contrast and brightness are poorly set, which is why you can't see the shape.

    Stuff

Im using a Playstation 3, how much of this still applies?

For a PS3, all of the contrast/brightness stuff applies. The only bit that doesn't is the part at the bottom about the Xbox 360's "Reference Levels" setting. On PS3 there's a setting called HDMI Full Range somewhere that does pretty much the same thing. For TVs expecting video-level inputs (the norm, unless your TV is set to "PC mode"), you want to keep HDMI full range turned off. This makes your PS3 spit out a video signal with luminance levels meant for HDTVs. If you're using your PS3 with a computer monitor or a TV set pretending to be a computer monitor, you should turn HDMI full range on.

Enabling this setting when your TV isn't expecting it sometimes makes it look as if you really are getting a wider contrast range (deeper blacks, brighter whites). You're not. Your TV is just throwing away ("crushing") the more subtle greys at the top and bottom end of the scale and replacing them with complete black or complete white, so you're actually getting a worse picture. Secondly it can cause banding to appear on gradients and other picture artefacts on some TVs.

I have nearly 100 hours playing the game -PC version- and something happened that turned it dark on me as well. It's so bad that in daylight building features are so dark, almost black, I can't tell what they are when I am standing across the street. At night it's way worse. When fighting off waves of bad guys from any distance I can't distinguish who the bad guys are and who my guys are. Driving is very difficult. This just happened recently after I bought some DLC content via Steam..

No other games or applications have darkened except Saints Row. Nothing in the game settings has any effect. I have a pair of geForce GTX 580 Fermi Black Ops video cards and using the nVIDIA control panel has zero effect to make it playable without trashing the way everything else looks. What's odd is that when the game loads for just a second it looks OK then the over darkening effect kicks in.
