So I have never played, nor seen a Saints Row game played. All I know about them is that they're similar to GTA, and after watching the recent video on the craziness of the game, I'm interested. So can someone give me a rundown on the general mechanics of the game? What's different between this and GTA IV?

It's like a continuation of the Grand Theft Auto series where, instead of getting realistic and darker after San Andreas with GTA IV, it went the opposite direction and got crazier.

Saints Row is its own thing.

It can't be explained by a reasonable person.  And that's why I want it.

Its a fist wrapped inside a gun put inside a tank which is ontop of a helicopter which is strapped to a jet plane which is piloting a aircraft carrier that shoots chainsaws.

an "over the top" gta styled game that will have censored nudity there by hindering the "over the top" comment i just made, but damn does it look fun.

IT's a compelling narrative exploring the rich characters of an evolving world and the myriad of problems that surround organised crime. Some moments of it are truly the most touching entertainment ever made, easily Oscar quality if it were a film.

It's like Crank.

You're the leader of a gang, called The Saints, and you just go around and kick the asses of other rival gang members. And kill prostitutes with chainsaws. And shoot crackheads with rocket launchers. And even shock old ladies to death with stun guns. Yep, it's good clean fun for the whole family.

It's an open world video game.

It's like a sequel to GTA: San Andreas in that it's GTA, but it's still fun

It's basically GTA but it doesn't take itself seriously at all. GTA tries to have a serious story and tries to be somewhat "deep". Saints Row knows that the only reason people buy open world games like GTA is because they want to be dicks and cause as much damage as in the most ridiculous ways possible. Tanks after GTA IV got rid of them? check. Several  Different nutshot animation? check. Jets? Check. A Giant Purple Dildo? Check. Its insanity in its purest form

Picture GTA, now take away the good story, solid gameplay mechanics, realistic open world, interesting characters, amazing graphics and awesome soundtrack....you're basically left with Saints Row.  The garbage dump of video games.

This, and also...

I think it's also mechanically better than GTA. Rockstar Games always add in some jank to the controls and you play those games in spite of this.

SR controls better.
