Overview
Tengai (known in Japan as Sengoku Blade: Sengoku Ace Episode II) is a 2D historical-fantasy side-scrolling shoot-'em-up developed and released by Psikyo for arcades in 1996.
The sequel to the 1993 game Samurai Aces, Tengai shifts the gameplay from vertical-scrolling (where players pilot aircraft) to side-scrolling (where players control the character directly). This style of gameplay was later used for the game's 2004 Japanese-exclusive PSP sequel, Sengoku Cannon.
It originally received a home port for the Sega Saturn, released by Atlus exclusively in Japan on November 22, 1996. It was later bundled with the original game in the Japanese PS2 compilation Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 2: Sengoku Ace + Sengoku Blade and was released separately in Europe (by 505 GameStreet on October 3, 2006).
The game was also digitally re-released for both the Nintendo Switch (on March 29, 2018) and PC (on June 21, 2020). It was ported by Zerodiv and released by City Connection. The Switch version was also released in multiple compilation: Psikyo Collection Vol. 2 and Psikyo Shooting Stars Bravo. The original game also received a mobile port for iOS devices (by APXSoft on June 4, 2014).
