The Price of Greatness (Is $49.99) 15

The game's nameless silent protagonist, FlynnObjectively, Shin Megami Tensei IV is a great game. It successfully modernizes key gameplay mechanics that have stagnated since the watershed release of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and introduces a unique, wonderfully-rendered rendition of a demon-beset Tokyo with amazing aural fidelity. For the Shin Megami Tensei neophyte, it’s easy to recommend as a definitive entry point (and no, the games’ stories are not connected, so you can jump right in here)...

Name Your Celebrity Philosopher Crush 2

Should the strong rule the weak? Should every human be viewed as equal regardless of obvious inequalities? Should tradition be enforced to preserve antiquated ideals? What is freedom of will? When is an uprising justified? Is true neutrality ever a viable option?Aside from possibly seeing the above questions on a philosophy exam, the average person does not ponder their answers on a daily basis – I know I certainly do not.Enter Shin Megami Tensei 4, the latest in the long-running franchise of J...

    I didn't expect a game this gritty on the 3ds! 0

I have a long history with jrpgs. I started out with Final Fantasy VIII and was immediately hooked. I came late to the Shin Megami Tensei series, first playing the persona games in 2012. When I saw there was a new game for the 3ds I was intrigued, but I'd not played the predecessor, Nocturne. When the Fire Emblem/SMT promotion came out I had a new 3ds and decided to go for it.Let me tell you straight out - I love this game. It's nearly perfect as far as RPGs go. It improves in every way o...

    Portable Perfection 2

I know that a lot of people will not find the game interesting/fun/perfect/etc. But, the majority of those that buy this game know what they are getting into. Those that do not, if the price tag doesn't immediately turn them off, and they spend a little time learning about the game while playing, will find a lot of value here. I have played about 12 hours thus far. I am a huge fan of all the games in the series. The demon fusion is addicting and the voice acting is good. I find that the story ...

Maybe the best 3DS game ... even in 2016 0

I'm a fan of RPGs, but I would say that my enthusiasm for Shin Megami Tensei is recent even though I've known about the series for quite some time. Persona 3 was fantastic and I have been trudging through Persona 4 Golden on and off for the past 3 years, but even though it has personality, I'm just not into it as much as I'd like to be. Shin Megami Tensei IV is the game that did it for me, and I'm excited to play SMT4 Apocalypse soon as well. There's a lot that feels dated and low-budget, like...

    All the world's a dungeon 0

What is Shin Megami Tensei? To understand, I think we have to understand the dungeon-crawler as a genre. It took me a little while to realize, but in Shin Megami Tensei, the entire world /is/ a dungeon.Shin Megami Tensei IV is obscure. Not in the sense that it isn’t popular or widely available — it is, now, both of those things — but because it’s intentions, the “about” of it, are hard to grasp, difficult to fully articulate. This is because the game chooses t...
