@itsahme: He's Dan's brother-in-law, which was weird. Dan's in their cover video for Party All The Time.

And I'll be seeing them play tonight in like a half hour, woo.

@azraelephant: I'm loving it. Jan and Grubb (and Jason?) are great core Bombcasters, and it's good getting a fresh member of the rest of the team on every week.

Regarding Jan's nuggs challenge. There are two questions I think he should know the answer to before he tries it.

1. How much sodium is in 100 nuggs?

2. What is a lethal level of sodium?

I remember when this podcast first started. Rarely did the hosts talk about anything other than video games. While that wasn’t always what I wanted from the crew, I always had the Bombcast to listen to when I wanted to hear information about video game news and the opinions of the duders.

I am listening to this episode as I write this comment, waiting for the crew to get to the video games. I have now hit 9:00 minutes. So far they have only talked about people that I don’t know, restaurants that I don’t know, and anything they can to not talk about video games.

This is the same thing that happened to IGN, GameSpot, Waypoint, Kinda Funny and nearly every other video game site I have been a fan of over the years. Bummer.

I am now at 13:00 minutes and they STILL are just rambling. Grubb said they wanted the bombcast to be “more fun for lack of a better word” on Game Mess the other day. While I can see how some people could enjoy this, I am not here for parasocial relationships with y’all. I respect y’alls desire to change but this is not the direction that I personally enjoy. I do not know how much longer I will be able to listen to the Bombcast.

What Bombcast have you been listening to? It has always, since the very very start, had plenty of tangents about things that are not video games, that has always been a thing, early episodes literally had sections dedicated to talking about energy drinks. I'm not sure how you're only noticing this now, after 14 years?

The new BombCast is incredible. This week and last week has been the best and most intelligent game talk in awhile. And Jeff G’s own show is a great option as well for a solo show runner. There’s nothing to complain about. They are killing it.

@drocat: there was a good year and a half when Ryan could keep the podcast at a tight 90 minutes. Other than that this podcast has consistently been at least 40% vamping depending on the size of the cast.

Wut. Jeff Gerstmann and crew generally went on a hour long tangent about fast food or wrestling or whatever every episode.

Idk where Jess is but I hope she's having fun, and I hope
even more to have her back on the bombcast soon.

Are you sure you are listening to the correct podcast? The bombcast has , since its inception, featured many, many, many sections of rambling off tangent nonsense that has lasted anywhere from five minutes to half the entire podcast.

My god how utterly boring the podcast would be if it was how you imagine it.

Content policing is so odd.

@drocat: To play other advocate cause let's be honest your not going to get anyone agreeing with you on a site dedicated to people they come to hear shoot the Sih!t. Parasocial relationships during the big world crisis have become fast-forwarded IMO due to people being scared of in-person contact. It feels safe and reassuring to talk and hear voices from afar for some people. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but this is how the net has been going, especially now that we moved from Actors for example being these mysterious very tame, and tempered smiles with little character besides their movie and interviews about movies or deals, to these people admitting they like videogames, whether fake or not, watch tons of cartoons, play DND and all the stuff you like, again whether fake or not. They also have hobbies and stances on politics all making people love or hate them more if they align with what they like. The net has become a place where a lot of people look for echo chambers for their taste.

I think the banter helps people get a feel for personalities since the cast is usually very scattered on games they like or news they care about. People have come less for the games news and opinions and more for that parasocial relationship you mentioned. Hence why the idea is GB without all the main cast here is still GB cause all your really need is people talking about anything. Whether true or not, I don't know. But many just care for that level of interaction, they banter, you listen, while you drive or listen playing a muso game. nothing too crazy or stressful. I'm not saying that any of this is good or bad. Personally not in love with the ease, we can just talk to the president on Twitter or something as a 14-year-old can probably do... it's a strange world. One Twitter post about not liking something offhand can cause a debate and a war of responses. I think people just enjoy the banter since it's light and informs them of the crew's life without going into creeping territories of looking up their latest post and so on. to hear about their weekend. Also yeah, the cast has always been banter heavy but I agree often they could get to news fast when it mattered and tangents were usually super fun and relatable to the situation for the most part. But change can be ok, and it seems most on here love the new cast.

@drocat:

I kinda of agree with you. It seems to take a little longer to get to video game stuff.

Look, I understand that they have usually riffed about things outside of video games at the beginning of the Bombcast, however it does seem to go on for longer lately.

Like I said, to me it seems that way. I am doing more "active" listening to the new crew, where as I would mentally tune out when the old crew started talking about things outside of video games, particularly wrestling. I would wait for the signature "video game" music to tune back in.

The point i failed to make Is this… Yes they used to talk about energy drinks, and whatever else. But the start of the show was tight. The discussions they had felt rooted in something they were passionate about. These days it feels like they are just stretching to kill dead air.

This has been a very fun experience. The fact that you guys can’t say anything negative about the thing you like is sad. I expected to get people riled up but I didn’t think I would ruin all of your days with my opinion. Lulz.

No , he did not. Again, you may be listening to a podcast you have made up in your head.

EDIT ** - If anything its more coverage. The news will be covered on the bombcast but a deeper dive will be done on game mess mornings. It will be about the same on the podcast but further discussed on the daily show. this will be even more discussion of these topics than we used to get.

Heres the actual info of what is actually happening in reality :

Update: Jeff Grubb Clarified further on Discord. (thank you u/Eighter for sharing)

Grubb on Discord, issuing clarification: "If something heinous happens and needs the bombcast spotlight, it'll get the bombcast spotlight."

And separately, "I just don't think we need every week for it to turn into 20 minutes of us discussing the bummer news of the week on Bombcast. But there are a lot of passionate people working at Giant Bomb now, and they're gonna want to discuss these things."

"Like, there are layoffs every week. I can talk about that on Game Mess Mornings. But then if Jim Ryan eats a hobo, we will talk about that on Bombcast."

And form the man himself u/GrubbyGameNews

I didn't explain it very well:We will still talk about tough topics on the Bombcast -- especially if they are fresh wounds. I'll give an example:-- If a bunch of people get laid off on Friday and I talk about what that means for the developer involved on Monday, we don't want to spend a lot of time on that during the Bombcast.-- If Bobby Kotick gets accused of new union-busting tactics on a Friday, we will talk about it in depth on Monday on GMM and we will still likely bring it up on Bombcast.

What I'm basically talking about here is having a slightly higher threshold for getting into serious news that needs to be treated with sensitivity. There are a lot of smart and passionate people on staff and they are gonna want to talk about these things, and we will never put any rule in place to stop them from doing that.

Let me know if you have any specific concerns about that.

@splodge: He did say that. On a game mess morning. I apologize for misunderstanding something that a person working for this site said directly. He said he was taking out the news section. This argument is dumb. It’s okay for people to have different opinions than you, even if you think they are wrong for whatever reason. Not everyone has to like the things you like, or even have the same feelings about it. Critique and criticism is helpful for improving.

Again, you are defending people you do not know from a person you do not know. Parasocial relationships are unhealthy.

I’m glad to have made you so upset with my opinion. While you seem to be trying to prove some point, you are indirectly confirming my feelings about the community and crew here at Giant Bomb. I’m not sure why you are so defensive.

Just clearing up misinformation. You initially said the news segment was being removed from the podcast, even though there was an hour long news segment, and then doubled down when told he never said that. You now say you misunderstood what he said, that's good enough for me.

I'm not blindly defending anyone, I simply don't agree with what you are saying and some of it was misinformed and not true. Am I not allowed disagree, or be critical of your opinion, without you saying im "upset" and have an unhealthy relationship with the site? Does that mean WE have a parasocial relationship?
