Definitely interested in this game, and a friend and I are getting it. The graphics in this game are all over the place. The art style itself looks good, but some of the textures are just awful. I haven't seen a game with such wide swings in graphical quality in a while.

@bladeofcreation: That quality is what they are aiming for. They are going for an early 3D game, without texture filtering, look. It looks weird when it's combined with more modern lighting and post-processing. Especially the lighting, the lighting can make some textures look better than they actually are which makes things look inconsistent. The game probably looks better if you play it with a low resolution.

I'm surprised how divisive the look of this game has been, but then I always loved the aesthetic of combining old graphical styles (pixel art, low-poly 3D) with modern lighting, particles, and post-processing, so maybe this is just very my shit.

@brad: I think it’s got the look of a fake game you’d see a TV character playing. In a good way.

regarding the way the game looks: It looks like you cranked the SweetFX up on like a 2009 PC game, and that's kinda cool they're going for that.

Also the lighting is real nice, nicer than SweetFX

I really don't know why they didn't just move to a safer area, they were trying to settle in a area not safe to start in, it's meant for after you gear up and have decent armor and weapons. You could look at it like:

meadows: level 1

dark forest: level 2

mountains: level 3+

Most people spend 5-10 hours in Meadows before they are strong and prepared enough to move on. The Crow guide even tells you to avoid those areas.

The best building advice I can give is to use the beams and poles to build an outline of your building first. Then scaffolding to do the roof, then the walls and floors. Plotting it out first really helps you get everything right.

Odin would be proud of that mighty stream. Valheim has been a nice chill game to play recently and glad to see the crew had some fun with it.

Prepare for the 2nd boss well. Bronze is your friend.

As someone who's first console was a ps1 I love the graphics in this game a real playstation 1 mixed with modern shaders like someone turned on the shaders in the epsxe emulator.

A small swedish studio of 5 people made this game and it already sold 3+ million copies, that is insane.

@brad: I’m with you, Brad. I love the look of this game and and it oozes atmosphere. I also think this is the best adventure/exploration game since BotW; been soloing now for over 25 hours and feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface.

What a fantastic game this is, and really enjoyed this steam.

I wouldn’t mind a Let’s Valheim Together or a continuation of the Brad and Vinny duo.

It's Celda all over again, and that's why we can't have nice things. Game looks great; the lighting and depth of field help create a soft, dreamy quality. First game in a long time where I've just stopped to soak in the view as the sun sets.

I will add to the rest of the comments, the graphics are intentionally low-polygonal-looking to evoke a PS1 texture feeling. It's intentionally combined with modern lighting effects to make a similar feeling to that "HD 2D" stuff from Octopath, and I absolutely love what they're doing in this game.

After Blizzard's mind-boggling series of misteps regarding their Warcraft 3 remaster (and their blatant CPC boot-licking before that) , I'll let myself be cautiously optimistic, but no more. :b

The Dark Engine has never looked better.

@vinny's untimely death at sea could have been avoided if only he moved his crosshair a millimetre lower for it to hover over the ladder; would have been able to use it then. Agonisingly close! Crosshair is your friend in this game.

I have no desire to play this myself but I would happily watch them play it.

Have to keep in mind this game is like Morrowind in the skills, the more you run, the more you bow, the better your guy gets at it, the easier it is. If the game feels clunky at the beginning, it does get better as your guy levels up. The best part, you carry your guy across servers, so you don't have to do the starter part again.

Having a lot of fun playing solo. The only times I really wish I had the help of others is when I die in a dangerous place and need to go back to get my stuff.

This game does a lot of smart things that other survival games haven't done, like the way food is tied to your max health and stamina rather than just ticking your health down when a meter reaches zero, or the way the skill system works. Having a lot of fun building a little outpost with my friends.

@topcyclist: It's febuary. A lot of 2021 is left and these flavor of the month online games are forgotten fast. A LOT of games left this year. This will likely be forgotten by then.

I’m having a pretty hard time seeing the appeal of this game.

@so1337: Same, but it's really not my sort of game judging by the look of it and the general gameplay. I genuinely got bored watching it, however I really enjoyed the streaming presentation so at least that's something to look forward to with future streams.

@eroq: Right. I’d say it’s more of an exploration/adventure game, though. It’s not really any more of a survival game than BotW is, if you think about it; and I don’t think it should really be put in the same category as pure survival games, like Rust etc. Whatever it is, I love it.

Also why it's not even worth engaging the "It ugly. It for PS1" crowd.

shouldn’t the little holes at the ends of the walls let the smoke out? Maybe too many fires for the size? I’d like a little more structured lets play/walkthrough as so much of this was aimless (fun, but aimless). Just what the basic loop is like, how to start out with crafting/building etc.
