I hope they remain excited for the series. Even if Kai did a lot to improve the pacing, rewatching the first season I realized that if they expect it to keep the pace of the first three episodes, they got another thing coming until maybe episode 9 or so.

The series definitely picks up from there on and the Kai re-edit trims like 12 fucking episodes in the first 8 or so, but it's still a bit slow after the Raditz fight.

It's so weird seeing the differente attitude americans have about anime. To people in my country they are just cartoons like any other animation. Like, growing up, every day after school you would get on a national tv channel at 14.00 an episode of Dragon Ball or DBZ and then at 14.30 an episode of the Simpsons. Everybody knows who Goku is. And when i was a kid during the morning you would get like an episode of the Real Ghostbusters followed by one of Lupin, then TMNT and then i don't know the Smurf, Nadia: the Secret of Blue Water or Ducktales or whatever; and in the afternoon stuff like Sailor Moon, Street Sharks, Captain Tsubasa, Biker Mice from Mars, Ranma, Fist of the North Star, etc etc etc (a fuckinng endless amount of cartoons the more i think about it). Freakin MTV would show Cowboy Bebop and Beavis and Butthead and Alexander and Aeon Flux sometimes in the evening. Anime have been on national TV here since, I don't know, the early 70's? right by every other type of animation.

People in their fifties remember watching UFO Robot Grendizer as kids here, it's not something weird because it's "anime"; nobody makes that distinction.

Dan and Jeff doing an anime show is like two 10-year acquaintances that you thought you knew fairly well suddenly, casually shed their skin and become lizardmen. Or space aliens.

I knew that Kai sped things up but DANG, it sounds like those first 3 episodes of Kai cover the first dozen of Z.

Really enjoyed this podcast, glad it was handled earnestly. I like that they seem enthusiastic about it, but I think that that might fade as some of the wilder questions are answered and the novelty wears off.

So I do hope that they throw some wrenches into the podcast formula every so often to keep things fresh. Predictions, bets, guests, e-mails, anything and everything.

It's important to remember that in the U.S. they didn't start showing original Dragonball until they were halfway through the run of Dragon Ball Z. Not knowing what happened in the original series is really not that big of a deal, 90% of people who love the show were in the same boat as you guys more or less.

You miss out on the backstory of Goku's friends and how they all met and seeing how Goku learned how to fly, shoot fireballs etc. but none of that really matters all that much moving forward.

Looking forward to this podcast, this first episode was fun.

Honestly my new favorite thing on the site. It’s so good and the week wait to hear them talk about the next three episodes are going to kill me. I hope people are cool about going on this journey with Dan and Jeff and 1) don’t try to spoil them 2) criticize them for trying to figure out what’s happening or when they get something wrong. Please don’t be assholes guys!

@milehigh17: So I'm finally watching DBZ too and I asked the same question as you in the Giant Bomb Subreddit. Someone there pointed me to Funimation. There is a 14 day trial and after that it is $5.99 per month. It's working pretty well on my Roku and it looks like they have apps for all the major streaming devices.

The only bummer is that they have Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, and Dragonball Super but not Dragonball Z Kai. Still the more extended cut version of Dragon Ball Z seems fine to me so far and $5.99 per month seems a hell of a lot better than buying each individual season on blu-ray.

The issue with Dragon Ball Z proper compared to Kai, such as it is, is that there's a lot of filler. That's not a bad thing in-and-of-itself (some of the more entertaining one-off episodes are technically filler) but because of the way Toei specifically handles filler it led to a lot of fight scene and power up scene bloat, with chapters of manga, designed to be read in ~5 minutes, filling out one or more entire episodes. It completely kills the pacing, which is a shame because that's one of the things Toriyama is best at. Plus that's before you get into entirely filler storyarcs which are generally considered the low points of any anime, with DBZ not being an exception.

Yeah, as someone who is as new to the series as Dan and Jeff I would have preferred to watch Kai simply because even that run has so many episodes that I will probably fall off before I finish. I'm just going with DBZ instead because that's what is available on a streaming service and I don't want to pay $25 per season for the blu-rays.

Edit: I will say that I'm about 12 episodes in to DBZ now and the standard cut isn't bothering me at all. Unless the filler picks up more in later episodes I'm totally fine with this version of the show.

Despite being anime, DBZ seems like it'd be extremely Dan's shit. I mean, he loves MGS and pro wrestling.

I forgot just how much bonkers there is in the series.

Also: I wonder if they're watching slightly different versions. The bluray version has the western movie trailer style voiceover for the recaps and previews. Jeff mentioned that the recaps and previews in the version he was watching are voiceovers by the characters.

To answer Jeff’s question in the mid 90’s the show would come on daily on Cartoon Network at 5pm. So as a kid I’d come home, do some homework then watch DBZ and the other shows. It was easier to wait because you got 5 episodes a week. And you would finish an arc in 6 months or so. It was a part of everyday life. School, toonani dinner other tv etc

I also started this at the weekend having had about as much Dragonball knowledge as Dan.

The first 3 episodes were pretty great, but it slows down a bit after that. I'm excited for it to pick up again.

Mr. Popo's design left me fuckin' aghast.

I am so glad you guys are watching Kai. Its pacing is so much better. The original series was 291 episodes, and Kai cuts it down to 167. Plus they redid a lot of the 20+ year old art and it looks really nice. Definitely the best way for someone new to the series to watch it.

So to Jeff and Dan, here are some quick easy character summaries from Dragonball of people who matter in Z, because very few of those characters' backstories are ever touched on in Z.

Bulma - Genius inventor, made the Dragon Radar as a teen, went looking for the Dragonballs, found Goku living alone on a mountain, they adventured together.

Krillin - Goku's best friend, trained together with him under Master Roshi, was killed by King Piccolo & revived with Dragonballs once already. Surprisingly he IS human, despite canonically not having a nose.

Master Roshi - Pervert turtle hermit, martial arts master who developed the Kamehameha, taught Goku and Krillin. Was friends with Goku's grandfather, Gohan.

Yamcha - Desert bandit who attacked Goku & Bulma, hung around with them for awhile plotting to steal the Dragonballs before eventually becoming pals with them and fighting together at tournaments with Goku & Krillin.

Tien Shinhan - Former rival of Goku and student of Master Crane, Roshi's old rival from their youth. Used to be an asshole, beat Goku in the finals of a tournament once. Chiaotzu is his weird little mime buddy who mostly doesn't matter in Z.

Piccolo (Jr.) - Offspring of the evil King Piccolo, who was a "demon" that Master Roshi sealed with a special technique in his youth but escaped and was killed by Goku. This Piccolo fought Goku at the end of original Dragonball for revenge, and still currently hates him.

Kami - Guardian of Earth, good half of King Piccolo, and creator of the Dragonballs. Lives on a lookout floating in the sky.

Super loving this so far, I'm glad you guys are enjoying it. Dragonball was a big deal for me as a kid (hell who am I kidding it still is) so seeing all these people get into it through FighterZ is really cool.

This is really enjoyable. While I haven't watched much of Kai, I still remember a lot of the stuff in DBZ that I can follow along (and I have an idea of what they cut out of original DBZ). I just love listening to people dig into something I know a lot about for the first time

@jiggles: Yeah...Mr.Popo is a really contentious thing because of the obvious Blackface design (he was the same way in the 80s mangas). I really don't know if that was intentional or not; it's the same problem Jynx from Pokémon had.

Either way, I think even if it wasn't intentional, it's still problematic and I don't exactly buy that "well, the Japanese didn't know about these racist cariactures!" as an excuse for keeping it.

The decision to watch Kai was 100% the right choice, however I just think it needs to be stated for the record that the new theme song does not hold a candle to the extreme 90's ownage that was the original show's opening:

@combustion_man: @sogemanactually when Bulma meets Goku she is 16 and he is 14. Crazy I know, they establish that on the episode after yamcha appears, where they take a bath together. She never sees him as a romantic interest until he arrives to register on the World Tournament, the one where he fights Piccolo Jr
