I'm going to throw my hat in the ring that is stating this should be called the Spirit Bombcast, despite the fact that neither Jeff or Dan will know why as of yet.

I also enjoy the fact that Dan finally admits that Metal Gear is just anime.

I was considering watching the episodes but I decided it would be funnier to just hear Dan and Jeff try and explain with no context.

After watching the first DBZ episode this week, I knew I couldn't watch Kai. Kai seems to cut out all the stuff I find charming in the series. In addition, it's badly edited. They cut every corner possible and some cuts feel jarring. I also prefer the DBZ voice acting. It's far less angsty and more old school anime charm, even if amateurish at times.

This all said, how do the episodes align? If I watch 4 episodes of DBZ a week will I keep pace with this podcast?

Jeff, Dan, SSJ is just the Japanese way to say Super Saiyan. It's shorthand for 'Super Saiyajin'. SSJ is just Super Saiyan. Spoilers.

Hey Jeff, the game you're thinking of with the over-the-shoulder perspective is Budokai Tenkaichi 3. Budokai 3 is more of a traditional fighter. It's obviously busted in some ways, and confusing at times, but it's nothing like the mess the Tenkaichi games were.

Yeah DBFZ has got me thinking about Dragon Ball a lot and I was considering rewatching Kai. This is even more incentive!

Dan and Jeff needs to see the original Dragon Ball in Japanese at some point. Because the original dub is bad and inaccurate. Kai is the only good DB Dub that exists but it only covers about 50% of the series. So just the Z portion. Piccolo was established to being a Demon at first it's only later in Kai where it's revealed that he is also an Alien.

This is already hilarious. I remember as a kid starting with Z and being just as confused as Jeff and Dan.

Like any series in the history of mankind the only way for it to truly make sense is to watch in order of release.

Dan/Jeff don't listen to people always asking "but why Kai!". It's infinitely better than the original run we fans all saw in the late 90s to 03. The nostalgia love and pure blind hate for Kai (without them taking a chance on it) is still ridiculous. I do miss the Gohan meets the robot, let's learn about sacrifice filler episode though.

@milehigh17: So I'm finally watching DBZ too and I asked the same question as you in the Giant Bomb Subreddit. Someone there pointed me to Funimation. There is a 14 day trial and after that it is $5.99 per month. It's working pretty well on my Roku and it looks like they have apps for all the major streaming devices.

The only bummer is that they have Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, and Dragonball Super but not Dragonball Z Kai. Still the more extended cut version of Dragon Ball Z seems fine to me so far and $5.99 per month seems a hell of a lot better than buying each individual season on blu-ray.

Spurred on by their tweets, I ordered the first Blu-ray. I know very little about Dragon Ball and most certainly am only aware of the memes. "It's over 9000" and apparently some of the other ones that seems to have taken on negative connotations by the worst parts of the Internet. Either way, I finished the first disc of the Kai - Season 1 Blu-ray last night. My plan was to only watch the first 3 episodes to be ready for this podcast, but based on how the 3rd one ended, I watched all 9 to complete the first disc. I like that it appears to be recapping the filling and moving the story ahead of the main parts. A time line is introduced and I was worried that would be done over the course of 10's of episodes. Luckily it's condensed well enough and made it easy to keep going. In case anyone wants to know, spoiler for the last episode of disc 1: Kamacha, the knock-off looking Goku is killed.

I’ve seen every episode of the original DBZ and just started watching Kai over the weekend and anyone telling you that the original is better than Kai is out of their mind. The dub is better, the music is better and it’s so much more watchable without the filler.

Super excited for this. I can't wait to listen after work. Lots of nostalgia for DBZ from my anime-watching youth. I imagine it was a gateway for a lot of us in GB's target demo.

The issue with Dragon Ball Z proper compared to Kai, such as it is, is that there's a lot of filler. That's not a bad thing in-and-of-itself (some of the more entertaining one-off episodes are technically filler) but because of the way Toei specifically handles filler it led to a lot of fight scene and power up scene bloat, with chapters of manga, designed to be read in ~5 minutes, filling out one or more entire episodes. It completely kills the pacing, which is a shame because that's one of the things Toriyama is best at. Plus that's before you get into entirely filler storyarcs which are generally considered the low points of any anime, with DBZ not being an exception.

@xanadu: Goku's Japanese VA makes the subs unwatchable for me. It made sense when he was a child, but I can't stand hearing it as adult Goku.

@milkman: I can tell you with great confidence that the original is better, but it's because I watched the Latin American Dub, which is insanely good and uses the original Japanese music. I tried watching the original English dub.. and man, you guys got it rough.
