Turbo's are easy to understand. Fire needs two things in order to exist: air and fuel. The more air you have, the more fuel you can burn, the more completely the fuel burns and at a hotter temperature (creating more energy).

The easiest way to understand how a turbo works is to think of a pinwheel. When you blow on a pinwheel, the pinwheel spins. Now imagine you blowing on the pinwheel is the exhaust of an engine. Now connect a shaft to the other end of the spinning pinwheel to an air compressor so that when the exhaust spins one end of the pinwheel, the other end compresses air. Now shove all of that compressed air into the engine, and you have a large volume of air in a very tiny space which allows you to burn shitloads more fuel and get shitload more power as a result.

Newman-Haas racing was Carl Haas. Stewart-Haas is Gene Haas. They are not related. Gene Haas is starting the F1 team.

They are not related.

Carl Haas had previously fielded an F1 team as well.

No Easter holidays in the States? Sucks for you guys. This race is a good one for us Aussies - Race is on at 5pm and we have a public holiday on Friday and Monday.

Anyways, great podcast guys. Should be a good race!

Edit: I always thought that the leaf blowers were cooling the engines. They aim those things towards the sidepods, don't they? I'm not 100% on that either, but I always assumed that was the case.

On the topic of taking an Indy driver for the Haas team. There were some CART drivers who came over to F1, most recent one being Sebastian Bourdais, who dominated the Champ car series , winning 4 back to back championships from 04-07, then came to the Torro Rosso team and got obliterated by Vettel in his first full season.Vettel outscored him 35-4 during that year with the older 10 point scoring system.

Yes, they were a bit off on that. The leafblowers are for cooling, to keep the car from overheating. They can overheat quickly when not moving if no other intervention is made.

From an American perspective, yes, it is one group.

"How is one group going to cope in China...?" See how that works?

"How are one group going to cope in China...?" See how that looks strange to us?

Edit: As an aside, I've heard it proposed that this linguistic difference had some part in the weird American legal recognition of corporations as persons.

I heard Danica Patrick has wanted to get into F1 for years, if an american team needs a driver that would bring publicity, she wouldn't be a surprising choice. I think she might have test dove for Honda F1 a couple years back as well.

The leaf blowers are for cooling the brakes and sometimes they put them in the side air intakes to cool the engine etc.

They actually arent cooling the brakes and the engine even tho they point the leaf blowers at those things. The engine and the brakes are optimised for that high temperature wich it keeps during the race, you will notice during formation lap the drivers are warming up the brakes and clutches and so on, they wont work at low temperatures.

What happens when you stop the car and air stops flowing is that instead of the heat from brakes/engine dispatching into the air it moves into other mechanical parts around the brakes like the wheel housing, struts, intake manifold and so on and these parts are not made for high temperatures.

So those are the parts the leaf blowers cool down not the brakes and the engine itself.

Kind of random, but I just discovered that Formula 1's website has awesome highlight videos of the last year (so most of last season is still up). They're all less than 3 minutes long and get me pretty excited. I just started watching this year, so it's nice to quickly see last year's stuff. I missed Bahrain, and watching the video after last week's podcast worked pretty well.

@rethla: They definitely use them to cool the brakes as well. You've no doubt seen that when an F1 car stops on track its brakes very quickly begin to smoulder and can catch fire in some cases.

The brakes are always very hot and they ofc arent getting any hotter when the car stops and the driver stops braking. As i said its the stuff close to the brakes that takes damage from the heat when the car stops and air stops flowing.

Its the same when you drive your own car. If you drive agressivly for some time like on a steep slope or a track day or something you always should do a "cooldown lap" before you stop where you drive timidly at low speeds for a while and let everything cool down with air flowing. Otherwise areas around the brakes, clutch and other hot parts will take damage.

You could see on practice two in china yesterday there was a car who got some rubber scrap from the road into the wheelhouse and it immediately catched fire becouse the brakes are operating at like 800celsius or even hotter i dont know exactly numbers. The brakes themself just feels warm and cozy but other stuff cant take the heat and needs air flowing to cool down.

As far as potential American F1 drivers, Conor Daly and Alex Rossi are the top Americans in the feeder system right now in GP2. Rossi won a race last year but he hasn't really been a big front runner at any level.

Ryan Hunter-Raey, Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti are Americans racing in Indycar. RHR won the 2012 title, but I don't know if her want to be an F1 backmarker. Graham and Marco are... well they kinda aren't great. Graham basically sucks.

Then there's the last American F1 driver Scott Speed, but it was probably a mistake by Red Bull that he was ever brought into F1.
