Nothing quite like a game stubbornly adhering to realistic mechanics like matches burning out when you run, while refusing the player really simple problem solving like carrying one of the dozens of lanterns you light, only to then inundate the environment with thousands of the consumable item negating the tinsel-thin layer of reality that was being proposed in the first place. Does this game take place in a damn match factory?

I'd watch a Vinny's Kitchen Frightmares show:

"Preheat oven to 200°C, stir well, place in oven, ponder a dead body and stand for 5 mins."

I enjoyed this game a lot. The story and locales was a lot more interesting than The Dark Descent to me.

isn't the lantern the primary light source in amnesia games rather than matches or is rebirth primarily matches? seems like it would be way easier walking around with a lit lantern rather than going candle to candle lighting them.

Aside from the annoying match mechanic, does this game have a good story? It's kinda the main reason I go to Frictional Games for these days.

@mrmckrinkledink: In Dark Descent, your start out with a similar mechanic to matches in the form of tinderboxes. You can't use them to make light themselves, but you use them to light candles, stationary lanterns, etc... And you could only use them on a single item. You get the lantern a little later. I think you also get a lantern in Rebirth eventually, but not sure on when or if it functions like the dark descent one. Seems like it might be further in than the lantern in DD which might be what is so annoying about the matches -- you are stuck with them a while.

And just to comment on the critiques of the mechanic in the QL. I agree that the matches and immovable candles/lantern isn't the greatest mechanic. But it seems to be a direct improvement over the tinderboxes. At least with matches you can use them to light several nearby things and they make their own light. It ain't great, but it is no worse than Dark Descent in that regard (and I really loved Dark Descent as a whole). It has been years so slight chance I am misremembering how tinderboxes worked, haha.

Rebirth isn’t as scary as Dark Decent and the story isn’t as good as Soma, but it’s a good time.

The game tells you up front not to worry about winning, so I wouldn’t worry too much about your match situation. Like Dark Descent, most of the fear comes from tricks and isn’t actually hard at all.

My two cents say yes. I didn't really know what a sequel for Amnesia should be after such a long time, but turns out they had some cool new directions to expand on the central concepts of the series. And by cool, I of course mean terrible and depressing.

I'm not sure if i care about Amnesia's story, but at the same time i do like the tone of the story quite a bit. I also think that this locale is much more interesting, albeit less immediately scary.

Totally understand the frustration of not being able to light candles with other candles and such. Especially because this game tries to be so tactile (actively having to push doors open instead of pushing a button to open them entirely, manually operating machines and turn levers etc), and then it turns out that you can't handle lanterns and candles. On one hand, clearly it's a design choice because the devs don't want you to create lightsources in certain parts or don't want you to get rid of the darkness in every room. But on the other hand, it would make more sense to do this and get rid of 50% of the matches you can find instead. That would be a more realistic and satisfying experience probably.

@onemanarmyy: SPOILER(maybe): I think their goal might have been to trick the player into creating as much light/dark constrasts as possible thinking it will make them feel safer when it does the opposite, because its only when you transition between light/dark that you actually cant see shit. If theyd give you less matches youd be forced to go through the dark more often and have more chance to find out the darkness doesnt really matter. You can see pretty well in the dark but not so much when theres other lights nearby and that in turn makes the darkness scarier. Maybe that would still work with less matches but I think thats why theyre so generous with the matches. I havent finished the game though, so the darkness might effect more later and render my argument invalid :P
