Quick Look: Ape Out

I love this aesthetic. What are the chances for a free-to-play? They could call it Ape-x Legends.

This turned a lot of heads at PAX South this year. Devolver put it up on the big screen at their booth.

simple concept, original execution

Went out and bought it for Switch halfway through watching the quick look. This game looks awesome and so far up my alley, can't wait to get home and play it.

That surprised me honestly. Didn't Dan say that he never read a novel before a few weeks ago and during this quicklook he suddenly declares Congo the book to be superior to the movie? We're getting played!

Ah, a clear reference to Blue Note album covers? That's 100% tailored to my interests.

(Huge dipshit voice) But the 1954 copyright date on the one in Ape Out is a fair bit before the beloved Blue Note aesthetic had been cemented.

This game looks (and sounds) rad as hell to me. Might be a benefit to just plow forward through a stage without focusing on killing everyone you see.

Also, I know it might be a little more complicated than this, but I believe you can distinguish an ape from a monkey because apes don't have tails. I've also never seen any monkeys that are as big as gorillas. Food for thought.

This game is the best argument I can think of to have that category this year.

I actually got to playtest this game back when it was just a class project at NYU. If I recall correctly, the main designer Gabe first met Bennett Foddy as one of his students there

Stylistically this looks amazing. The gameplay seems a bit one note but it seems to do one thing and do it really well.

I went pretty cold on this game by the end, but I'd still recommend it to people for the opening impression and commitment to its style alone.
