Personally, I hate playing UFO Catcher. Be it in a game or real life. But watching Dan playing is so damn entertaining.

Would love it if you were able to put out two videos in this series per week...

@danryckert Kazama beat the shit out of Kiryu and Nishiki explicitly because he was AGAINST them joining the Yakuza. It wasn't initiation, it was him trying to stop them. Thought I'd mention this since it's kind of an important detail.

This one actually looks fun, the only other one I played was the orphanage one.... yeah.....

I'm one of those that love the added on side options in games like this.

It's great that this thing actually exists. I also love that it says Mega Drive on it and not that silly other name. Haha :p

I actually might have to buy one as the Mega Drive was my very first console. Me and my brother spent months saving pocket money for that thing.

Great episode guys. Re: heat moves @alex, Vinny was right in that this series doesn't lean into environmental stuff as much as Sleeping Dogs; the bulk of them are with weapons (most weapons have at least 2, one for both standing and downed enemies). Maybe check the list through the abilities screen to see what's currently available.

Even if its just once a week, the length of these episodes really makes up for it.

Also I'm pretty sure that that green duck is some sort of Kappa.

Just finished, I'm glad they're enjoying themselves. Once they get a handle on the heat system (L1 to change grip on people, and all "types" of holdable items have their own heat move) they'll enjoy the cinematic destruction stuff.

Great work and looking forwards to next week!

The physical similarities are there but as the game goes on I think Kuze ends up looking the least despicable out of the Dojima lieutenants.

Uh. How? I think they overstated the importance of the trainers and didn't use some terms correctly, but they're spot-on otherwise. Kiryu is being framed for murder by Kuze in order to get the Empty Lot, the other two lieutenants may or may not be involved, and whoever delivers the Empty Lot to the head of the family get's Kazama's spot.

@alex So on most of my playthrough of Yakuza, you're going to get a lot of the side story stuff opening up to you by just going from objective to objective, so I wouldn't worry too much about running around looking for side content.

@dan Shogi is incredibly complex. I spent like 5 hours trying to beat that guy and never even came close.

There's a shogi sidequest in Yakuza 2 that I only won by having an item that basically lets you say "Hey what's that over there" and rotate the board. So I would get to the point where I was about to lose, then flip the board and come in for the win. Even then, it was no guarantee, because I had NO IDEA what I was doing.

My advice would be don't be afraid to buy healing items from the shops when you're low on them. You get enough money after one street thug fight that you can fill your entire inventory and storage box up with them if you want. Skip the cheap stuff. Get the expensive healing/heat items. You'll have no issue affording them.

Here's one of those comments telling you stuff about the game you guys mentioned looking forward to

Side missions will open up after you go to the apartment. You don't lose access to them by progressing the main story, so don't worry about that. There are dialogue pop-ups as soon as you get anywhere near them so they're hard to miss. You're sure to naturally run into most of them just going from place to place. Some stores will have side quests once you get to chapter 6 like the bowling alley.

On the abilities screen if you hit triangle you can look at a list of heat moves and the conditions needed to use them. Generally it involves grabbing someone, knocking someone down or holding a weapon, but there are some interesting exceptions. The names are also very fun to read. I think you guys would enjoy looking through it.

Love the show, can't wait for the next episode!

It's going to be a couple of weeks before the community figures out who the one or two people are that are going to nitpick and complain about everything imaginable (and some things unimaginable) in each comments section. Then a few weeks after that, one of those people will bravely announce that they are "leaving" Giant Bomb because of how "disrespectful" one of the staffers was to the Yakuza series.

I'm sure they'll get a million comments about it, so I'm not going to harp on them too much, but it's a little frustating watching how little they were paying attention to when that heat icon was popping up. There aren't a lot of environmental action in this game. It's more that you pick up stuff in the environment and use it to heat the shit out of enemies. That being said, it is an absolute necessity that you guys throw/heat someone off a high ledge or railing at some point.

All the same, this is still my favorite content on the site right now. It's going to be another agonizingly long wait for the next episode.

Hey guys! Great episode lol I love your enthusiasm for the game. Just beat it myself over the weekend so watching others go through the insanity is super satisfying.

Some tips I have to offer you guys:

- Heat moves are triggered by pressing triangle, but for most of them I believe you need to make sure you're standing still. Triangle is also your strong attack so if you're running or moving that's what will happen over the heat move. I think that's where some of the mistakes are coming in re: triggering the heat moves. Most heat moves are associated with the unlockable skills, picking up objects, etc. but there isn't a Sleeping Dogs-esqe system with environmental stuff.

-DO. NOT. TRY. MAJONG. I'll spare you that now. It is more complicated than Shogi and Dan will have absolutely no attention span or patience for it, so seriously, SERIOUSLY stay away.

-Don't worry excessively about skipping subplots (the side quests), as most of them you'll naturally encounter just running about. They'll begin after resting at the apartment and I don't believe any of them lock out. Keep in mind some of these quests are tied to store clerks, restaurant employees, and the minigames. These quests require you to build a "friendship meter" that eventually leads to an ending event. So while yes you wanna run around, there's incentive to do the mini game stuff also.

-Mr. Shakedown is definitely not someone to mess with this early in the game. You can easily avoid him though when you see him on the map (has the amount of money he's carrying over his head). Also YES you can sprint: hold down X. It is tied to a stamina meter not visible. You can avoid some random encounters this way.

-A quick head's up regarding your inventory: items don't stack. So when you buy say four of an item it fills four slots.

Can't wait until the next episode!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Decade_(Japan)

The Lost Decade or the Lost 10 Years (失われた十年 Ushinawareta Jūnen?) is the time after the Japanese asset price bubble's collapse within the Japanese economy. The term originally referred to the years from 1991 to 2000, but recently the decade from 2001 to 2010 is often included, so that the whole period is referred to as the Lost Score or the Lost 20 Years (失われた二十年, Ushinawareta Nijūnen). Over the period of 1995 to 2007, GDP fell from $5.33 to $4.36 trillion in nominal terms, real wages fell around 5%, while the country experienced a stagnant price level.

Hmm, I mentioned that you can drag guys over to walls and railings for Heat moves, and for some reason now they think that's how the entire Heat system works. It's... not about dragging people over to interactive objects. The Heat icon appeared in the upper right while Dan was wielding an object SO MANY TIMES and he didn't use it, meanwhile the Heat gauge is completely filled, all three bars. When he did the box of nails, it almost sounded like an accident.

"It seems to be doing the same thing..." Well, yeah, you're doing the same one or two Heat moves over and over again.

They know about the icon, they bring it up, they know that there's TWO requisites for doing a Heat move (the flames AND the icon), so I don't know what's getting lost in translation here. I hope they figure it out.

Yes, people knowing that not having a pinky means you're former Yakuza is part of the point. By taking the pinky it shows that you have the resolve to dismember yourself to get out and it makes certain that you are marked as yakuza for life. A final fuck you for leavers and those kicked out.

Shenmue was really impressive when it was released. This game is almost 2 decades newer.

Both of these series are fun, but this one has the benefit of having the audience give them input, and sometimes complain that they aren't playing it right, between episodes. The comments are actually pretty similar in both so far, it's that this is a newer game so more people commenting have played it.

Really enjoying this. At one video per week it will take them a pretty long time.

Rush style is probably the best against Mr. Shakedown. He's very easy once you figure out how to fight him.

There are various substories (side quests) that open up every chapter, and you can always start them in later chapters (you won't miss stuff).

You may have to revisit some areas - for example, there's a bowling alley substory that will be available later if you play a game, but it was not available when Dan bowled in this episode. It might be annoying because some people you talk to (including employees at stores) won't open a substory or friendship until later.

@alex@vinny@danryckert The heat actions, are majority weapon / item based. Pick up a weapon or item with circle, then press triangle, keep an eye on the blue flame on the top right corner.

You could grab an enemy and suplex them to railing though.

As for fun mini games, there are slot car racing around middle west part of the city, interesting video booth called Gandhara, another Sega Arcade that has other classic sega games, and fishing (you'd need to take a cab to Tokyo Pier to do it)
