Kinect actually does have a 'mechanical turks' type solution for gathering user data. I did some testing to sign up and do some of that work at some point where I was asked to transcribe kinect recorded voice clips.

There are some really amazing, and cheap, pipeline tools now that allow single, poor developers to concentrate on building the game instead of worrying about assets. The most expensive tool now is Unity 3D and it is amazingly inexpensive at just $1,500.

Mine has been pretty good, and I have a wireless connection. I haven't been doing games like Battlefield, but Killzone plays better than Killzone 3's network.
