Isn't the nintendo online shutting down stuff entirely due to the third-party that they outsourced it to? Pretty sloppy theorizing in this podcast.

In all honesty, do people consider Cowboy Bebop anime? I know it's 'Japanese Animation', but I've seen people who appall anime adore the s**t out of that show.

Of course it's anime. Some people just don't realize there is good anime and bad anime.

Why wouldn't it be anime? Just because people who dislike anime like it? If someone hates TV dramas, but likes Breaking Bad, does that make it not a TV drama? The only reason people wouldn't consider Cowboy Bebop anime is because they're too scared to admit that they like an anime. They believe that anime and "good" are mutually exclusive, so good anime is not anime.

There are subgenres of anime just like there are subgenres of films and cartoons. Anime is just a medium. The types of anime that people tend to dislike is shonen and ecchi shit. They just don't know those classifications and just use the general term "anime." Which is the equivalent of saying "I hate all movies."

That's like a vegetarian trying to convince themselves that chicken isn't meat. They're just too ashamed to like something they adamantly try to hate.

This is your brain on anime.

(Also, I hate anime and Danganronpa is pretty good so far)

Saying you hate anime is like saying you hate all types pies.

That's probably a way better analogy than you intended because I don't really like pie. I don't really like the concept around it. I don't really like its execution. In fact, most of the time it's filled with stuff I hate. And no matter what you add on top of it, whether it be ice cream, whipped cream, or cheese, I won't really find it more appealing. It just does nothing for me.

But if someone offers me a slice of pie, I probably won't refuse it if it hits a few appealing notes. Like pumpkin pie, for instance. I loooove pumpkin baked goods, but I would much prefer any other type of pumpkin baked good over pumpkin pie. Muffins, cake, brownies, tarts, whatever. But if someone offered me a slice of pumpkin pie, I would eat it and enjoy it. But I would never seek it out myself when there are much, much better options out there.

@devoureroftime: There is clearly something inherently wrong with you if you hate pie. Pie is great. It trumps cake any day.

You don't like anime that's your business, but I can't let the pie hate slide.

The IOS Ace Attorney compilation is probably the worst version of those games, you'd be better off trying the WiiWare versions, or the standalone version of the first game for IOS.

Of course, the hard-to-find DS versions are obviously ideal, but it's understandable why you wouldn't want to go that route. As a huge AA fan, I'd be stoked if you played them at all, but yeah, that IOS compilation is kind of a poor version.

Also, I would buy a shirt with "This is your brain on anime" with the image Alex described.

Aren't they making a 3DS compilation of the AA games? I thought I heard that recently.

Although who knows if that will get localized.

Oh good. Now maybe one of the staff will watch Baccano.

Seriously, everyone, even Alex Navarro, needs to see Baccano. It's the anime that Quentin Tarantino would make if he made anime.

I tried watching Baccano once at the insistence of someone and I couldn't get into it. I should probably give it another shot sometime, but I haven't really had much personal drive to do so.

Baccano should probably come with the disclaimer "you're going to confused for a few episodes because of the non-linear structure". I don't know if that's why you put it down, but it certainly took a few episodes for me to like it. And then something clicked and I watched it several times.

@believer258: I did only get a handful of episodes in. It wasn't necessarily confusing, it just didn't really do anything to hook me. But I probably should try to make it a bit farther.

So you basically you dislike the dough foundation right? The thing about pies is that there's thousands of variations you can make or buy to match your own taste.

Dahn-gahn-rohn-pa. Danganronpa.

Why in the world is that so hard? It's not Dompanongra or whatever the heck he was saying.

@matoyak: When people talk about annoying anime cliches and archetypes, it's usually in relation to Shonen stuff, you know, the shows the average American child was exposed to. For every Cowboy Bebop and Ninja Scroll, there's a hundred Naruto and a hundred JRPGs with extremely similar characters.

There's also the insanely melodramatic dialog that pervades a lot of Japanese media.

Asian media in general really, if you've seen Chinese and Korean dramas.

I can see how Patrick thinks House of Cards has tons of plot holes for the same reason he thinks there's not a lot of "politicking" going on. Frank's schemes may be far-fetched and convoluted but that's not the same as the show just writing shit that fits.

I don't know about the rest of your comment, but yeah, there aren't any plot holes in House of Cards. The show is air-tight. It definitely has some fairly ridiculous moments... but plot holes? Where? If someone wanted to talk about things that are actually worthy of criticism, they could mention:

HUGE FUCKING SPOILERS for season 2, final episode:

Doug's death was the most stereotypical death. It was some kind of weird horror-movie cliche that had no place in the show. Dude chases girl into woods. Girl apparently becomes a ninja and makes zero noise. Camera pans around Doug and you can clearly see through the thin trees that no girl is in sight. Nevertheless, girl flies out from nowhere and kills him. I just think that scene was really lame.

I love how completely baffled they are by Cel Damage HD. To be fair, it's pretty fucking insane that anyone is making an HD version of that game.

Whereas Anime in general has degraded to a much less broad, arguably less sophisticated medium, where the majority of works that reach us from Japan today are playing to a similar audience expressing similar things. Panties mostly.

I have too much respect for Japanese animation to be happy about the current state of the medium.

While I mostly agree, there's definitely some anime that don't fit the bill. One of the best animes running at the moment definitely isn't all about panties because like all other clothes, panties are an alien plot to subjugate us all.

@druv: Hit me up, I'd love to know what show you're referring to. I dive deep down the rabbit hole a couple of times a year to see if there's anything I think is worth watching and besides one or two movies and a couple of shorts directed by old Pros it's always disappointing.

The most interesting thing I've come across recently is Space Dandy but I have no interest in checking it out until it's had its full run. Watanabe shows never start the way they end. But hey, at least all the sexy girls in it seem to be adults.

If you took a normal block of programming from the late 90s and a block of programming now there's a good chance you're going to find way more sex in it, anime's just charted exactly the same course only it speaks to different culture.

super weird, I sorta pegged Patrick for being able to see the parallels. I know he's old enough to have seen Jurassic park, surely he's watched american TV from back then.

I wonder if either of them is a fan of Game of Thrones?

tl:dr: "my culture's sexual appeal in media is good/uninportant and their culture's sexual appeal in media is disappointing/wrong."
