Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops and the Wolf: 05/02/2014

We want to like Child of Light more than we actually do, but that's not the case for the FOX television show Prison Break! (We also cover Hitman GO and the Oculus news.)

Grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on the day's headlines with Giant Bomb guys that aren't in San Francisco.

Child of Light has some of the same problems Okami does. Looks fantastic if you're into that aesthetic and is definitely not a game that shows up every other week. But both of those games provide little to no difficulty unless you go out of your way (Okami) or knowingly choose hard from the outset (Child of Light). I suppose that could be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. It's a pretty chill game, which I enjoyed after playing Faster Than Light:AE the past few weeks or so.

All the rhyming reminded me of Gruntilda from Banjo-Kaoozie. They should have a rhyme off.

Disingenuous Call of Duty Fan Alex is now one of my favorite versions of Alex I've ever seen. That high pitch "what" was amazing. Haha. Fobwashed had a perfect gif in the Podcast version comment section. Haha.

- Alex sounds like what I imagine he sounded like when he was 16

- Is it just me, or does he actually seem healthier than usual? I feel like his trademark bags under his eyes aren't as pronounced as usual.

I watched all of Prison Break as it aired (and got continually absurd, stupid, and Mexico), and viewed the special at the earliest opportunity (in disbelief), and had a crush on Sara Tancredi - for season one only for some reason. I do not feel bad about this. I DO NOT FEEL BAD ABOUT THIS.

You're free now. Patrick. You're free.

An ironic side-effect of being sick and getting more sleep than usual?

While I adore the thing from top to bottom it does seem like an easy game to be incredibly divisive about.

I saw the first season of Prison Break and then bailed 2 episodes into the second season. I guess good on them for getting to make more but the series should really have ended when he like, you know, broke out of prison. Meh.

It's funny Alex calls the smaller WWE PPVs the 'shitty' PPVs. I'm the opposite, I find the smaller ones to be the better ones. It's Wrestlemania, Summerslam and Survivor Series that are the shitty ones to me. (and sadly in the last few years Royal Rumble, because they just treat it as a pre-Wrestlemania show instead of it's own thing)

Wm Ss and SS all suffer from 'bring back the old guys because nostalgia'. They're no longer spectacles of their own but instead try desperately to 'remind' you why you used to like wrestling which is a terrible way to go about building a business. That said this WM was better than the last 10 so hopefully it is a sign that the WWE is actually starting to realize their fan backlash is something they need to deal with and not just rely on WM to sell because it is WM.

For me Money in the Bank, TLC and Extreme Rules have been my favorite PPVs since I'd come back to watching wrestling 3 years ago. They seemed to be trying to be interesting out of necessity because they don't have the automatic "it's Wrestlemania so I guess I'll get it" mentality that they've been relying on for those big PPVs. The real question is, with the network, will they focus exclusively on WM and SS because that's when people's contracts are up for renewal and the in between stuff suffers and gets less interesting accordingly.

@fobwashed: I thought the second season of Prison Break was ok. It wasn't until the Panamanian prison that it just turned into garbage television.

Patrick's criticisms never have any consistency.

If a game not allowing much customization of characters is a really bad thing, how come that didn't come up in Chrono Trigger? Does it get a pass because it's old?

If a game not explaining a system is a really bad thing, how come Dark Souls gets a pass for it?

It seems like he lets expectations dictate his impressions too often.

You know, that Call of Duty trailer does have some pretty crazy shit in it that you probably wouldn't expect to see in a Call of Duty game. Like power armor dudes jumping 30 feet through the air and goddamn hoverbikes.

It's a little early to say, but it does suggest the potential for actual, meaningful advancements in gameplay for that series! Or at least an attempt to bite off Titanfall.

I don't really understand the skill tree complaint though. Each tree is very clearly built around upgrading specific abilities and those abilities dictate the way that you'll be playing that character. The individual skill ups might be something of a mish mash of points but if you pay any attention at all to what skills you are actually moving toward on that branch then the specializations are pretty obvious.

Child of Light isn't the only part of Ubisoft's attempt at making smaller, more experimental games. They also greenlit Might and Magic X which is a old-school RPG in the vein of the DOS-era installments of that series.

Also I remember Prison Break as being "that show that was on before 24". Because I watched 24 after it went bad, and hoo boy did it go bad after the 5th season (the one that won the emmy, hilariously enough). I'm glad that Patrick has the same attitude of "I need to know for myself" in regards to terrible things that I do sometimes. Makes me feel better about playing a bunch of crappy games on purpose last year.

I will always hold a special place in my heart for Prison Break. Even though it got kind of ridiculous towards the end, makes no difference to me. The show originated where I live and I had a personal connection to it. I was so invested in the characters and story that I didn't care or even really notice how absurd it got. I was crushed when it ended. The first season is legitimately some of the best TV I've seen. Season 2 is also really good, and realistically it should have ended when they were on that boat at the end. Sarah Wayne Callies was super hot on that show and I had the biggest crush on her for years. T-Bag is also one of the best villains ever. FUCK, MAN, Prison Break was so great.

@onekillwonder_: Agreed! I watched that serious beginning to end on the edge of my seat, even when thought it went on one season too long. Dominic Purcell is still one of my favorite underrated actors.

I remember being sad when Abruzzi was gunned down and a part of me was kinda rooting for T-Bag(mostly because we share the same first name).

Edit: I haven't seen this "Final Break" movie but i assume it's not canon as.......SPOILERS: Michael dies in the series finale.

I'm still not sure if they called it Hitman Go because of the board game similarly named Go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)

I love Child of Light BECAUSE of the combat and its timeline. I started it at Hard difficulty and I think it is just fine. I lose sometimes and every battle is a challenge. I agree with the Skill trees, they are a bit of a mess. I am near the end I think, and I really enjoyed it so far.

Interesting about Child of Light's writing feeling like it's trying really hard and just not executing well at all. That is exactly what I was worried about when I learned the guy behind Far Cry 3's story also did the writing for this. It is a similar issue.

Feel better, Alex. I wanna mail you some soup. :(
