Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops & the Wolf!

Bombin' the A.M. With Scoops and the Wolf: 07/07/2014

We fall into a black hole of AOL and CompuServe before finding our way out via Net Zero.

Grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on the day's headlines with Giant Bomb guys that aren't in San Francisco.

I enjoyed the new Transformers quite a bit. Definitely think they should give the next one to a different director though. Those movies should not be almost 3 hours long and have any kind of a love story to them. Glad that they took out Shia and his awful film parents.

Hope you are able to do a show with Dave Lang this week. Love having that guy around.

NetZero had a giant banner ad you couldn't get rid of. That was their ad supported free internet.

Also, nobody knew you could turn off that modem sound. That's why that sound is indelibly marked in all of our brains.

Speaking of that Ryan Davis/Anthony Burch Twitter beeve, I had the honor of being rolled into the Twitter conversation by Dan Teasdale when I confusedly asked "Shots fired?"

We used a local company called Internet Solutions for our dial-up needs. It was pretty decent, as I recall--and of course my older brother knew a bunch of BBSes for us to telnet into for when we were short on hours (because we paid by the hour--I think it was about thirty hours a month?).

After the fact I knew about turning down modem sounds, but at the time... had no idea. I'm 32, so I guess it was one of those things you just figured out when you got old enough. :p

No "For Sale" sign outside, but you have me scared now! Constant stream of new hires coming in so maybe it's a secret.

I've been told the safest pronunciation is Kotch for filthy auslanders who will never get it right.

Of course, I've deluded myself into thinking you pronounce it the way that would make it awesome.

Because Saints Row/The Singles make a lot more sense that way.

Thanks for the show that I enjoyed especially the dialup nostalgia. Now some sourness:

Goodbye to another singleplayer studio Airtight Games and thanks for all the fish. Sorry I didn't buy all your games (Quantum Conundrum was a good game especially considering its price level but I got stuck after a couple hours). I guess you didn't spend enough money on marketing your product and forgot to fill it with microtransactions :(

I feel like Patrick is reinforcing his own philosophy of "the death of B-game studios" by

  1. repeating it several times because people will believe any statement if you repeat it enough
  2. shitting on studios that make decent but not excellent games that are not 8-bit style couch multiplayer 2D games with a gimmick made by less than 3 people. I know Giant Bomb covers the games they want but that doesn't excuse them from giving a game a shot before judging it.

Most studios and their developers need some time to learn from their mistakes e.g. Rockstar North or even From Software probably didn't make the best games 15 years ago but they have had time to grow into a very successful studio today.

Am I the only one who, when they hear someone say they'll download the game via their press account to try it out, is reminded of someone saying they'll pirate the game to "try it out"?

I know it's a different beast, and I'll admit to having little to no idea of how those press accounts work and if there is any profit going back to the developer from them... but it just seems like an awfully dismissive thing to say of a game, in either context essentially saying "I'll play it as long as I don't have to pay for it"

About the Mighty Number 9 bit... Since the animated series announcement came so close to the extra crowd funding announcement, I wonder if the extra funding is for using the same actors and studio for the english voices. It's entirely a guess, but it would explain the need for additional funds, especially if they are redoing the work.

I mean, it's essentially the same privilege either way. You play the game and the only thing the dev gets out of it is you promising to talk about it. Whether it's on a forum or on a morning talk show, that's all you're really "promising".

That might be somewhat true, but it's the same as a movie critic might not pay from their own pocket to see a film, if the studio wasn't holding private (free) screenings for critics.

There's nothing really extraordinary about Steam press accounts (I don't even think they are their own category or anything) - if a publisher wants coverage of their game, they will send outlets like Giant Bomb a Steam Code for their game, which often times may include some "journalist specific" configuration of the game (for example, if it's F2P, it may include a bunch of the game's currency). Giant Bomb then decides if they want to, or have time, to cover the game.

Doing this, and making these decisions, in a professional capacity, is another world from some 17 year old pirating a game "to try it out".

@patrickklepek Something popped into my head after today's stream and I didn't have a chance to ask:

How do you define a B-tier studio? Is it their size/budget? Sales? Or purely the quality of their games?

It's just the way I think about it if we define them in terms of their game quality. The games that want to shoot for the biggest leagues but are nowhere as well produced. Then yeah absolutely the B-tier stuff is kinda dying out.

However if B-tier studios are defined in terms of their budged or team size, I would have to disagree with you, we have seen a very good upswing of games coming from medium teams in the last couple of years. Be it indies becoming larger, or larger teams slimming down, there has been a lot of good to decent 20-40 dollar games around lately. Some of them were able to thrive on Kickstarter. Studios that realize their limitations yet manage to do great stuff. Stuff that's not really AAA titled, nor really indie (as we traditionally think of it). X-Com:EU, Divinity:OS, Double Fine games, Endless Space/Legend, the Van Helsing games, Path of Exile, Orcs Must Die games, Shadow Warrior, Torchlight 1-2, Wasteland 2, Banner Saga, Shadowrun Returns, Killer Instinct and so on.

The trick for NetZero (for a while, at least) is that you launched the application, let it dial-up into the server, and then kill the task in the task manager. This would allow you (still crappy) internet without that annoying perma-ad on your screen. Yeah, yeah, we were all 15 in the 90's once.

Burning truth with truth bullets.

And the worst internet I ever experienced was the primordial days in the mid-'90s wherein the entire state of Wyoming had but a single ISP. Meaning that my family's net connection had to reach the ISP located half a state away. It's one of the few times I think I was ever thankful for all of Wyoming falling under a single area code.

I'm always blindsided every time I hear that Crytek is working on Homefront 2. There is no way that game is going to be released with that name (or released at all, from the sounds of things).

I remember Jeff referring to him as "Mr. Business" now on the most recent ad that Vinny did before leaving for MY. Actually I kinda like the ring of Mr. Business as his moniker for the morning show!

No, but seriously, do people actually think Tales from the Borderlands is being written by Anthony Burch? I listened to that part again and I can't tell if Patrick or Alex even realize it. Like, if you care about writing, then you should know who is writing a game.

One of my favorite Ryan tweets.

I still have a really profound dislike for Anthony Burch from podtoid back in the day. But maybe he's changed and he's less full of himself. I used to hate Jim Sterling too and now I couldn't love the guy more.

Patrick's free-internet-napster friend sounds like a real teenage dirtbag.
