Ahh, another episode of the "Y'know" show.

The Batman talk was kinda ehhh. The quicklook this morning definitely sold me on it. Especially the boss battle. Even the tacked on multiplayer was pretty interesting.

Yeah, it's more Batman. But the story is apparently the strongest of the three, says our holy god Adam Sessler, who gave it a 4/5. I trust him implicitly. Comparing it to a Scott Snyder comic makes me want it even more.

I do understand not wanting just another Batman game, though. I don't even know where I was going with this.

Bombin the A.M. FROM THE FUTURE!!

I don't like Patrick and Alex's approach to Batman. Forget the "is it the first of these" argument, the fact that they both agree, sight unseen, that the game is less interesting because it's the same shows a far deeper problem. It means that they are going by people they know, perpetuating a consensus.

Those viral consensus among the tiny community of reviewers are turning reviews into largely useless sameness. If both Patrick and Alex are willing to talk so much about whether the game is "worth money" without having played it, then how much of their opinion is informed by that pre-release buzz from other reviewers, preview events and the like? It'd be cool if Patrick was right and they were judging the game purely as a game, but if they have that much of an opinion without playing it, that's not what's happening.

Maybe reviewers should stop worrying so much about shielding themselves from PR and start shielding themselves from each other. This parroting of commonly accepted tropes among their little treehouse is really damaging their output as a whole.

For the record, I'm halfway across Origins. It's more of the same, but not any more than NBA 2K or any given Call of Duty. If you want more Batman, this is very fine more Batman. As long as you know that's what you're getting you shouldn't let that stop you. If you were done with the series after City, this won't change your mind.

EDIT: Also, the irony of damning Origins for being overly conservative but claiming interest in a new Phoenix Wright (let alone Pokémon) is exactly what I'm talking about here.

@noelveiga: But it IS more of the same, and they're not really interested in that. You might be, and that's good for you. I can't see the problem here. They seem to be done with the series, at least until the devs to something new with it, and as you say, since it's obvious that Origins is more of the same, it's Natural that the game won't appeal to them.

And I'm guessing the reason why they're mildly interested in a new Phoenix Wright is that neither has really played those games before, at least not in a big way. So even if it's more of the same, it's not more of the same for them because, unlike with the Batman games, they've not been fans of the franchise before. Honestly, sometimes I wonder if people just get upset for the sake of it.

Hope the cat is a regular part of the morning show.

As far as Zelda, I wish we could get one with voice acting, full orchestral score, no more midi sound effects, etc. Its time to really bring Zelda into the modern era.

I'm totally on board with their POV on Arkham Origins. When the first games in the series still hold up and aren't that far separated in terms of visual fidelity and control, why not suggest that someone start at the beginning?

As for reviewers getting (a little) tired of a series when a pre/sequel doesn't deviate much, well, you [i]do[/i] want them to mention when a game is a lot [i]better[/i] than the original, right? Why is it suddenly uncool to compare things when a game is competent but unambitious?

I think the point of the Arkhum debate is, did they need to make it? Answer is no, there are plenty of good gaming hours already clogging shelves so why more of the same.

The rape scene in B2S was gruesome! David Cage must be stopped!

I really like what Pat said about how reviewers are able to see games for what they are and not what they want them to be because they just paid for them while shit-talking the existance of a game he has not played. From what I've played so far this is the best of the series mechanically and storywise.

But the text is emblematic of the fact that Zelda is still stuck in 1998.

Again, voice acting does not equate to modern. A game does not need voice acting to be a quality, entertaining game in this day and age.

Fucking hilarious. Cage's arrogance is pretty astounding, if he seriously denied creative input from anyone. I mean, fuck. No matter how good you are, you need an editor. When you create anything, it sometimes takes years before you can step back and look at it the way an average consumer would look at it, and when you deny yourself an editor you wind up with garbage like Beyond.

That's why I said emblematic. It represents a broader problem with the Zelda franchise as it has repeatedly refused to evolve.

Voice acting also does not equate to evolution. The series has evolved. Maybe not in the presentational aspects you seem to desire, but it has evolved.

I just have a request. Alex, can you please work on removing the empty room echo from your audio? It is very distracting when listening to the show.

I assume all the talk of cryptic messages this weekend was about Adam Sessler. I know I was freaking out, thought he was fired or something. At this point it just seems like Rev3 might not get one of the launch consoles ... I don't know. It would be nice to have a lot less secrecy in this industry.

Patrick does realize that the "most interesting part" of any david cage game is usually the most plagiarized part? indigo prophecy being the exception as the narrative falls apart the second it becomes a big dumb mishmash of plagiarism from a bunch of movies and comics.
