Breaking Brad: Breaking Bradborne: The Platinum - Part 02

Who's a good dog? Are you a good dog? No, sorry, good dogs don't usually run around barfing lava.

I know what most people are going to say "oh Brads bad at video games" and any other time I would totally agree with you. However I have been stuck on this boss just like him for a really long time now. Nothing else in the entire game gave me any trouble at all. This dog is a piece of shit. Good luck @brad !

This is a real tough fight. I did manage to beat him after many attempts, and basically came up with a cautious strategy of staying in front and just making hit-and-run attacks to his head using 2H Ludwig's Holy Blade. I only went to the side when he barfs lava, and only when I felt I had plenty of time.

I saved a recording and uploaded it after seeing Brad's attempt. @brad - feel free to check it out. I think it's about as safe a way to get this done as any:

Suggestion: could you put a link to the previous episode in the show notes? I really like how they had that for Vinnyvania.

@efesell: @ryudo: I feel like this is a profound episode. It's Brad finally figuring out how to beat the boss. It's now up to Brad to be able to fight his urge to get greedy with wanting to hit more then necessary, which causes him to get needlessly hit.

You avoid playing great games because there just happens to be really hard things you can do once you beat it? You don't have to do anything Brad is doing and it's harder than anything else in the core game.

I just beat this boss tonight! Took me about 4 hours, split between tonight and yesternight. I did it with the Threaded Cane, not Ludwigs, though. My advice is dodge to the side that the appendage is rearing to. If his head is rearing left, dodge left, paw coming up left, dodge left. Dodge in more than away, usually. Basically just dodge away for the flame-chomps.

Other than that, no real "just one tip" for this fight, it's just a sunnuvabitch. He's got like 12 different attacks, different combos and routines, and nearly all of them can oneshot you. It's just a pain, but super satisfying to complete.

I think Brad should just spend some time leveling to increase his damage and health so the fight goes faster and he won't get one shot killed as easily.

@humanity: What getwimmy said, but I also agree that he should just lvl his strength and he should lvl up a better weapon that can do more damage to the boss. Cause I see him hitting a wall every time if he doesn't do those two things.

This boss was the first one where I had to seat my Bloodborne style down and think about it, had to learn to take my time and not be too greedy and then it clicked. More Dark Souls than Bloodborne in style. First phase I did my best to hit its soft sides and legs, gotta forget about getting viscerals with that head-armour. Later phases I had to accept that a single Forward+R2 leaping attack was as much as I could get in, lengthy careful tickling to death walking backwards in a circle around the room while it tried to reach and bite me. Slow and steady wins this race.

The Chalice Dungeon bosses are very happy to teach you that locking on isn't the most safe or effective or sane way to tackle them, in the case of Defiled HotDog it accelerates damage dealing real well in the first phrase, for some other bosses down the line it's nearly essential for survival and bringing it down. It gets really hard but not unfairly so. Some learn faster than others, and I still haven't learned to deal with Oswald & Smough in DS1 without overleveling and overgearing hard..

@monkeyman04: @getwimmy: I know it's a defiled dungeon so his health is halved but if I heard correctly in chat last night that he has 25 str and 25 skill then he can get a lot more damage out of that Ludwig. That said I think he would benefit from using a faster weapon as well.

Whats mostly killing him now is that two handing the Ludwig in the second more hyperactive portion of the battle is just too slow for Brad to get the hit in and get out clean. He could maybe try using the rifle spear which has that insane charging attack which covers a ton of distance or the cane in whip mode which affords you distance as well.

Of course, at this point you probably need to stick with the weapon you have upgraded the most. Not to take a jab at Brad or anything but using a slow weapon like LHB and finding good openings to attack does require a bit of skill which is why I admittedly avoided the weapon myself and stuck to faster ones.

Brad's dependence on lock on really seems to be killing him here. I stopped using lock on at all within my first hour of playing Bloodborne because you are so limited in how you can dodge. The sidestep is so small your only real option is to dodge backwards, and as you can see when this boss does the charge forward there's no way to avoid it by jumping back. Even the head swipes will get you if you're too slow jumping back.

With lock on turned off, my favourite thing to do is roll towards the bosses. All of their attack hitboxes go in front of them, so as long as they aren't turning as they attack it's really hard to get hit and you can then find yourself to the side or behind them for a quick stab.

@humanity: Sound advice, especially the bit about the "stick with the weapon you've got". Even if another weapon would somehow be objectively better, it still wouldn't be. Weapon movesets that you've spent 50 hours learning the ins and outs of will typically always trump using the "better" weapon.

Like I've done the entire game so far, like 100 hours, with the Threaded Cane. I have a maxxed Ludwigs and it's got better numbers than the Cane with my build by, like, 100 attack rating. I suck using Ludwigs, because I haven't spent the last 100 hours perfecting it's moveset like I had the Cane.

@getwimmy: Yah completely agree about the moveset. I used the cane for the entire first playthrough and even though Ludwig was tempting with it's damage output I simply cannot stand the slow attack speed because it doesn't mesh well with my playstyle. For my next two playthroughs I switched to the Scythe and that was the perfect mix of range and speed. Too bad that I never really found a good use for the scythe mode.

Also damage is funny in this game. I made a small video showing how a higher upgraded Ludwig with better stats was actually hitting for just as much as a weaker axe. Apparently there are a ton of hidden damage modifiers that make the stat screen damage output not very trustworthy for how much damage you're actually going to deal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP_Wiuk5W28

for you, yes. no need to get righteously upset about it. and i'm pretty sure brad will take the constructive criticism to heart and it's only a matter of time before he beats it.

to put in perspective, after hours of playing the game i was still stuck in the absolute very beginning area. i only reached the cleric beast once and died. obviously i need to change my tactics or something but it may just be that i'm not good at this sort of thing (particulary bloodborne as i didn't get nearly that stuck with dark souls 1 and 2). you should be thankful you're watching brad and not me.

You say that but you are clearing do more damage than him so you made your character a different way or are just a higher level for the damage. Lower your damage to what Brad has been doing and you would have ran out of vials and died as well. Not saying Brad has got near where the vials have been the issue but all would end the same.

@ripelivejam:

I had immense difficulties with Cleric Beast, I died over and over again. To the point that when I finally beat him I was over leveled, because I'd been farming Blood Vials from the brutes between the boss and the spawn point and got a lot of echoes.

All you have to do is stay at medium distance, and hit him in the head, that's literally all there is to it.

Brad was going in way too close to deliver the hits. LHB has great range, so there's really no need to snuggle up with the dog. He was also backing up way too far when the boss started attacking and closed in way too early, the trick is to wait for the dog to return his head to the center to get the easy hits. Brad was hitting the neck instead of the head.

Jason had the right idea in the beginning of the video, Brad got greedy when he saw the damage he was doing to its legs and started attacking from the side. Too risky. The only time you can safely go for the legs is when the dog barfs lava, because that animation takes eons.

How's that for constructive criticism.

P.S: I found the next boss was way harder, can't wait for that.

just saying it comes off a little less condescending and patronizing when you elaborate on helpful tips without acting all mock exasperated and slapping a youtube link in your comment. thanks for expanding on your thoughts at any rate, i'm sure @brad will appreciate it.
