Just when you think Danswers died, it sneaks back in answering questions from 6 months ago.

I often don't like Danswers, because Dan's usually amusing self-assured "my way or the highway" attitude grates on me more in the context of a life advice podcast than in most of the GB content. I know he's not being 100% serious, or anything, but the whole "nyaaaaaah just do a thing" style bugs me here more than other places. That's probably my own baggage; not sure why it irks me so.

Anyway, point is I'm hoping having Paul there to take Dan down a peg in a less polite way than Danny is usually willing to do will make this one work for me.

Edit: Nope! Made it about 50 minutes in. Can't do it. Call center guy, getting some exercise isn't a bad idea, but it sounds like you need to see a therapist!

@homelessbird: I wouldn't count on it. In terms of being really of being stubborn and unyielding on the platform of "just be normal", Paul is Dan turned up to 11.

@dreiszen: Yeah, but I guess it's just easier to deal with people being set in their ways when they're a little older. For me at least. It feels like they've earned it, somehow.

@homelessbird: I get where you're coming from. I always viewed this show through the lens of "No really, Dan Ryckert is giving life advice hahaha".

Dan seems to be a regular dude who has just had life work out in his favor a few too many times. I know a few people like that personally and they're naive about the weirdest shit like sour cream, how the law works, etc.

If Danny wasn't here to play the straight man I don't think I would have made it through episode 5.

A Very Ryckert Danswers!

Glad they brought it back with a guest who is capable of discussing more than one social issue for a change. The episodes where they almost exclusively focused on one issue were alienating.

Also thrilled that Papa Ryckert straight up noted that the real reason for NewDan is the g/f. It's a NEW DAN... Yes it is!

Tech-support dude, please ask someone else to help you find a "shrink" (as you put it) for therapy. Phisical activity might work for Dan but that is just for him (and for anxiety, you seem on a different spectrum); please try to put your energy into finding a professional first

Not to mention Dan is quite naive about how things tend to work out outside of his luck-based bubble. He tends to think things will end up exactly how they worked out for him, which is hardly how reality works.

A good reason I shuddered during a recent podcast where Drew started talking about jury duty and Dan was all about getting on a jury. I can't imagine Dan in a room with other jurors, it would turn into 11 angry men/women pretty fast. I was a jury foreman once and while it was a simple case it felt like herding cats at times to keep everyone moving forward and I feel Dan would turn that up a notch.

No kidding, I stopped listening to the Bombcast like a year and a half ago when Drew was talking about his trip to North Korea and Dan kept insisting he could find a McDonalds to grab a snack at. I understand he's partially joking, but these ignorant statements happen often enough that I'm worried I'm gonna wake up one day and hear he's dead because he put a fork in a socket when someone told him he couldn't.

Paul: They were going to charge me like $18,000 if I didn't get it back by a certain time

Danny: Right, yeah.

Paul: I could have bought a car.

Danny: I know! Not a very good car.

Wut? 18 grand should get you a pretty good car brand new. What's this guy talking about?

I started getting grey hair when I was like 17. I was a little like WTF at first, but I just tried to own it. People are always going to comment but try not to take it to seriously just say its just how it grows. Also I've been told by MANY women that they find the grey sexy (my wife hates this!). I was always just up front about it, and it was fine. May be easier said than done, but I don't know worked for me.

Something for the "college experience" guy. I'll talk about things went for me.

I didn't live on campus while in college and I didn't have the dorm experience. But I did have a student appartement not far off and a lot of my classmates commuted to class. If you don't want to live in dorms or something like that but still want to have some social experiences, I suggest you stay on campus even thought you're done with classes. During my first semester, I usually went straight home when I was done with classes for the day. After that, I started staying on campus longer, go to study rooms and just hang out with people in my major. Made tons of friends that way.

I'd say that that the ratio of good advice to bad advice is better in this episode than it has been in the past. The main correction I would make is to the depression question. Exercise is actually a very good method for dealing with depression (It provides energy, gives you attainable goals, etc,), but it should never be the ONLY method employed. You should always find a therapist, get a support group of a few close family members and friends, and try to find things you enjoy participating in . If you decide to exercise and meditate as well, than that will certainly help.

@dannyodwyer You saved it in stereo so the bitrate is split between two channels which makes the audio quality pretty terrible.

Anyway, great to see it back.

Surprised at the amount of negativity here. I always enjoy these. They're not experts, clearly stated. Any one ragging on it should probably have dropped off 10 episodes ago.

If you have serious depression, seek support from your friends and family and please talk to someone that can provide you with good professional help. While stuff like meditation, eating well, and exercise can help anyone feel a bit better, they're not some sort of miracle panacea for people with clinical depression.

At a certain point, giving that sort of advice to people that need real help is pretty damn irresponsible regardless of how many disclaimers you put up front that you're "not experts". If you can't offer sound reasonable advice to these sorts of questions, maybe you should try something less serious like questions from Yahoo Answers.

Definitely enjoyed this.

I can see Dan making a real effort to be more open to new experiences and ideas and a lot of that seems to come from examining the origins of his habits and mannerism (plus apparently having a great girlfriend who is getting him out of his comfort zone).

I do have to join the crowd saying that maybe that one person writing in probably could use a bit more help than is going to be fixed by exercising. Exercise and meditation are definitely good tools to have in the tool bag for making your life better and they're certainly advised by therapists to manage all kinds of things but, man, that listener sounded like they were in a really bad place and I'd advise them to get their situation examined by a professional. It may be nothing but I'd hate to leave that person stuck in a bad place with inadequate help.

I was someone who commuted from home to university instead of living on campus, and for my first two years my social life with pretty miserable, to the point where I was so lonely that I might've actually been depressed. I pretty much also just spent all my free time playing video games by myself. Ironically it was through video games that I managed to find a IRL group of like minded people who I became friends with, and even though none of us are really into gaming as a primary hobby a whole lot anymore we've still stayed friends. For me I didn't really break out of my shell so to speak until after I graduated and left the country to go teach in China for a year. As it turns out you learn to socialize real well when you're taken completely out of your comfort zone. But like the guys said, it's different for different people.
