E3 2017: We Talk Over the Sony Press Conference

A lack of surprises made this quite a boring conference. It was pretty funny to hear Sean talk about 'it being a rollercoaster' while every shot of the crowd was filled with bored people.

That said, some of the known quantities are still interesting. Ni No Kuni 2 and God of War mostly for me. Spiderman could be real fun, but the amount of QTE's and the very similar batman combat make me weary.

edit: I forgot about Monster Hunter World. That is a very cool announcement. Comes to PC and Xbox as well!

FYI The game at 23:20 that everyone except Brad ignored was Hidden Agenda by Supermassive Games (the developer behind Until Dawn). The game is like Until Dawn in that it's a narrative choice game where every character can die, but the choices are voted on by up to 5 players (can be single player) using your phone. Each player's phone also has different information too to alter what choices look the best. You play as the Detective and cops of an investigation into a series of murders where the murderer uses victims to lure first-contact helpers into traps.

I thought it was a really cool looking announcement (I like Until Dawn) so I'm pointing it out.

@dixavd: Nice, thanks for that summary. Sounds like something we'll have to look into.

Once again Brad talks about how Farpoint defaults to "no turn" and that you can't walk in a circle. Yes you can. You do this by turning and moving forward. You can even circle strafe like this. I think this is a fundamental VR concept that the game needs to do better about telling the user - you can use your body to turn.

Man, I remember I saw Jeff's "We'll start in 10 minutes"-tweet. Next thing I remember is waking up a couple hours later and the show was over. I guess I'll watch this archive.

Jason freaking out over Monster Hunter was amazing.

I work at a restaurant that serves Aqua Panna as an alternative to tap water and I must say, it's mad tasty.

Worst press conference of the event so far. Microsoft actually did better for once.

I think Sony have great looking exclusive games coming up, genuine exclusives unlike MS, but the press conference was always going to feel underwhelming compared to the last 2 years when they really knocked it out the park with huge surprises.

So I guess I'm wondering what the big holiday games are for Sony.

Edit: I'm not saying their stuff doesn't look great, but rather it seems like most of it is for 2018 and beyond.

It's funny Alex says that the DBZ game is going for a different thing than the new Marvel, because that game looks more like MvC (at least MvC2/3) than Infinite does. It straight up has assists, delayed hyper combos, etc. and is 3v3 like MvC2 and 3. Though a big difference is that the characters reset after a character gets KO'd, almost like its a new round like in an SF or what happens in a Darkstalkers game.

Playing the Infinite demo now I'm liking it so far, but like most fighting games it isn't much without digging your teeth in and having fun while getting familiar with characters you like.

Where the hell is Resident Evil 2 remake!?!
To be honest that was the only reason I was excited for this conference..I'm holding against hope that Nintendo is the one to have a trailer for it considering Resident Evil Remake back in 2002 was first released for the Gamecube

Was pretty average overall. Not even the live crowd seemed as enthusiastic and they usually are the most vocal/hyped for yearly E3 conferences.

Jason being extra joyous for Monster Hunter was the highlight of the event.

Jesus I wish Brad didn't look like he hated being in every single live stream.

I watched Sony's stream before this to actually hear it, they didn't botch the Miles reveal. That was whatever you guys did with your caching.

Most disappointing conference by far.

I thought so too, and why exactly was that shown? That's a pretty old, irrelevant (but good) game.

Great banter by the guys but a bit of a disappointing presentation from Sony. I'm really hoping the Xbox One X is a big success just because competition seems to be the only thing to get the goods from Sony. When they're leading the market they just coast along with no perceivable effort.

Sony seems to rather announce their titles at their own PS Experience than at E3. The games they showed looked pretty good, but it's the same line-up as last year (and Detroit and Days Gone still don't even have a release date attached to them!).

I thought the last 2 Sony conferences were absolutely awesome, but I must agree with most of you guys; this wasn't that great.

Looking forward to the VR titles, though and I will finally play Shadow of the Colossus it seems!
Oh yea and God Of War looks crazy good!

Spider-Man was a nice surprise; that looks promising.

Detroit's writing was laughable in what they showed; excuse my negativity, but it really seems like Blade Runner for idiots. I thought A.I. seemed like that when I first saw it, but nah. It had something. Heavy Rain was highly derivative of Noir and late nineties/early '00s thrillers, but there was a real sense of urgency about it, and some of the dialogue -- whether by accident or a lot of hard work -- actually resonated. This seems so much more forced in comparison.

God of War was weird. Kratos as a salty patriarch makes me cringe, and the gameplay looked so slow and plodding. Hope that changes once the adventure begins for real. I assume he'll dust himself off when the kid gets taken away or killed.

That zombie thing was pretty, and the animations as they tear through compounds and camps is extremely satisfying, but the characters weren't popping for me. I want to say it looked utterly generic, but those animations and the lighting... It could be a sleeper hit with some more tricks up its sleeves than we've been shown. Still, it was another super serious thing to show with some C-grade Drake quips sprinkled in.

Even that Uncharted side-game got super serious mid-way through its trailer. So depressing. Ubisoft showed fun stuff mostly, and I hope Nintendo continues that today. Microsoft slung a near-constant stream of stuff I've never heard of that looked interesting.

Monster Hunter looked great, and seems like the version with less system-focused stuff to finally get me into the series.

That mouse VR game really tickled my fancy also.

Boy that's one very broken archive. I have to manually seek ahead several times or else it just sits buffering forever. This should be cleaner.

Detroit would have been pretty good had it come out 3 or 4 years ago. The AI genre has been growing pretty strongly in the past few years, which makes the content in Detroit seem super outdated and trite.

Not the strongest showing, I ended up enjoying Microsoft and Ubisoft (which feels weird to say) more. I actually enjoyed the PS4 pre-show more, with Ni No Kuni, GT Sport, etc, being shown.

This is how I'm feeling after the show. I feel like Sony let their guard down and I hope Microsoft clocks them across the face. Sony had a great first half of 2017 and, like I mentioned in another thread, Destiny 2 and CoD are probably going to help move a ton of PS4s, but this show just felt like them shrugging their shoulders and going "where else are you all going to go? HAHAHA"

Looks like Days Gone is a gross game for gross people.
