I feel like I've seen Jeff play Pitfall 2 before. Or maybe just talk about it. Was it in one of the classic game livestreams?

Things I learned from this video:

  1. There was a Pitfall cartoon. What the hell.
  2. I am easily amused by such things as seemingly corrupted scores. 'UQQR.
  3. Pitfall II was and I guess still is a pretty kickass game.

I got to say I'm very impressed with what 'Pitfall II' has in it. Seems like a game that had elements in it that were years ahead of other games. I played the shit out of the first Pitfall on the Atari 2600, but never even knew there was a second game until a few years ago.

Great series Jeff, love it! :)

Great vid jeff, keep it up. Love this stuff. I used to play Commodore 64 games with a friend when I was only 7 years old. It was the first game system I'd ever played and games like this and the atari games really brings back memories.

Yeah, I liked it when the score said 'QoVV, looked very klingon-ish. Also the music was pretty damn amazing, could picture a marching band playing it.

I had a copy of this on the 2600 waaay back when I was a kid. Ended up loaning it to a friend of the family and never getting it back. I almost want to get one on eBay and figure out how to hook a 2600 up to a modern(ish) TV.

I think the version I played as a kid was on my old ass Apple II (which I still have after all these years & still works). It didn't quite look like this one though. Who thought that after 18 years, I'd be playing the same game (Far Cry 3)?! Sadly no shark pits in Pitfall II though...

Yeah for real. Have never seen it. It's really cool.

The no real fall damage thing is hilarious.

You can also tell Jeff has played this a thousand times.

Far Cry 3 could have used that balloon ride.

Wow, I played the 2600 version and was always disappointed about how short it was, I never knew about the second quest on all the other versions. Now I need to track down a copy and check it out.

Ah yes, Pitfall II. Of course, we could have been treated to the Game Room version with it's misaligned music. What a treat that would have been.

I remember Jeff mentioning the second quest when he played it in Game Room. The Atari 2600 version didn't have it.

I had a 2600 when I was 11, and when Pitfall came out I loved that game.  I'd play it over and over.  I think Pitfall 2 was the first direct sequel to a game that I had ever seen.  Keep in mind video games were a new thing, and on the 2600 publishers would just do new game or indirect sequels.  If some guy made a maze game they'd make a racing game next or a viricle shooter.   (Just look at David Crane as an example he made one different game after another and didn't even follow up Pitfall with a sequel until later.) So I remember seeing an advertisement for Pitfall 2 in OMNI magazine. Needless to say, when I saw Pitfall 2 was coming out I saved up all my money to buy it.

Sadly, I didn't know how to play the game.  I'm a bit of a completionist so I would go around collecting all the gold bars, all the silver, all the diamond rings, etc.  Played that way, not looking for check points, the game was super frustrating.  To search all around the game and to move through all the levels could take 45 minutes before you even got to the balloons let alone found any of the objects you needed.  While I respect Jeff's concept of just rushing through the game to get to "game +" to show it to use,  such a running of the game would be like firing up Mass Effect 2 and heading straight for the Omega-4 relay to go to the Collector base in the first three minutes.

With that said, there wasn't a lot to the game by modern standards.  A few enemy times, just platforms, water parts, balloons, a few weird drops.  But, despite finding it frustrating I played the game a good bit for over a year without figuring out or even considering skipping the hard bits to just get to the save points.   In my young mind WHY would you not play the game by going through all the levels and picking up all the points?  Funny how gaming is when there is not an online community setting some agreed upon 'standard'.  There was no FAQ for Pitfall 2 in 1984...few magazines, no internet, most people didn't own systems - it was just you , the game manual, and your own mind.   Which is why I just bought a computer in 1984 and never played a console again until 1995. You could almost say, Pitfall 2 was my reason for saying "Fuck consoles".
