The Lavos roar is the best soundbite to come out of the 16bit era. Every time you hear it, you know things have hit the fan.

Great episode, definitely a defining moment of the entire game.

I never understood how the Twin Golems fight works either. I had Brono and Bucca's last techs so I just exploded them a lot. I hope they figure out this prison break part quickly, like I didn't.

Yeah, the prison break thing is one of the more complicated areas in the game.

Brono melting would have had more impact if he'd been anything but another silent cipher of a 16 year old JRPG protagonist.

Thank God Bobo and Brog are still around! They've at least got personality.

Good work, glad to see they figured that one out pretty fast. The Ocean Palace Incident is a pretty interesting point in the lore of the Chrono universe, so many of the links with Trigger and Cross (and I suppose Radical Dreamers) comes from that moment. Took me a while before I exactly figured out EVERYTHING that happened during it though. Such great story for the time.

Not too surprised they are confused, I didn't even fully understand everything that happened in the Incident until finishing Cross and Radical Dreamers both.

I got the gist of it but I still don't know exactly what goes on.

Like, what's the deal with the Ruby Knife? Why does no one recognize it as the Masamune until it flies into the Mammon Machine (of it's own will, no less)? What happens to it afterwards? Somehow it is found in 600 AD? If Schala uses the last of her power to save Crono's party, how does she create/splinter herself or whatever into Kid and somehow send her to 1000AD? Why is Schala so attuned to Lavos' energy? Then there's the minor gripes of Kid looking, acting, and speaking nothing like Schala.

Their reactions seemed pretty sincere. I didn't get choked up when I got to this point playing the game as a teen. I think Crono is too much of a blank slate for the player to form any real attachment to him.

I thought "What button did you press!?" was pretty good. And man, that Lavos scream. You don't really feel any malice coming from it when it's just kind of sitting there, but then it lets out that scream and you know from the feeling in the pit of your stomach that everything is about to get fucked up. It's a shame they talk over it in the video.

I always thought "Destruction Rains From the Heavens" was an awesome name. It's one of those cases where, I think, a more direct translation from Japanese works. Over the top just enough to fit the ultimate ability of the final boss.

Bucca is no stand in for Brono, should've went with Byla at least. T_T

edit: Also that was fucking hilarious, Bobo surviving getting a punch in and laughing maniacally right before getting downed.

Them NOT having trouble with the Golem Twins is just the perfect pay-off. It's like they're idiot savants at Chrono Trigger.

To be fair, this game came out way before all the other games,w hich made silent protagonist a trope in JRPGs. And as kinda mentioned in the comments, if you had other people in your party at the time,t he moment carries a bit more weight.

Well, that sure was something.

Having not played Chrono Trigger, I predict they continue their fight against Lavos, defeat him, then go to 1000 AD and meet Crono at the very beginning of the game. Then they all share a laughing animation that Patrick is so fond of.

@mithical:

Well, a lot to talk about there, I'll assume anyone that clicks the spoilers is familiar with all 3 games in the trilogy pretty well, so fair warning!

A lot of it has to be discussed in the Lavos Timeline, since that's where a lot of the story events occurred. There's some good articles on it around, or you can find a translation for Radical Dreamers for some more background as well. Supposedly (it's not confirmed, but most people assume) Melchior finished the sword in the Lavos Timeline, since he was not exiled in that history and had time to finish and then left it guarded by his dreams until it was found by Cyrus originally. That's when it was broken by Magus, which is about where you come in to re-collect it. So you are getting the unfinished Masamune when Melchior gives you the Ruby Knife in the Keystone Timeline, even though you had already collected an alternate completed version of the Masamune that was created in the Lavos Timeline. As to why it turns into the Masamune when it meets the Mammon Machine, Dreamstone is apparently an extremely powerful conductor of Lavos energy, so I guess the energy from the Machine charged and mutated it. There's a lot more to talk about with Dreamstone though so.

As far as Schala, it seems like she didn't merge with Lavos right away in the Darkness Beyond Time. According to Cross, she had time before entirely becoming the Time Devourer to create Kid and send her to Lucca before she was fully consumed (with her pendant). I'm willing to accept that she drew on the powers she was getting as she was merging with Lavos to do it, before she became totally consumed. As to why she looks NOTHING like Schala...I dunno, I guess they thought it'd make the story too transparent? Don't got an answer for that one. There's a LOT more complicated things with Kid that happen after Lucca's orphanage so I never thought about the appearance too much.

Whew, does that help?

Brono would have to be a character first in order to be a major character. He's basically a cursor.

The main character dying totally has impact because he was the only character you were allowed to play as. At this point in the game, you have leveled up with him, gotten new moves, and are invested in the story. You experienced all this stuff THROUGH him, now the game says to play as someone else. Playing as Brog or Bucca or Bobo feels foreign and weird because you are use to someone else.

And even earlier, the little kid said "One of you will die". Who actually thought it was going to be the only person you are allowed to play as? My jaw was open the first time this happened.

@Landon: It's a good point, and a pretty unusual move for an RPG in this timeframe to just wipe out one of your crew. I had the same feeling at the big twist in FFVI at the end of the World of Balance. I was stunned that a game would just...throw everything out like that and craft something entirely new.

I really hope they don't leave the blackbird without getting all of their stuff back from the chests first. It's also too bad they aren't using Ayla. She's the only one who's still able to fight after they have all of their stuff taken away.

As for the twin golem fight, personally I just used Barle, Brog, and Brono. Their Water copies are so weak that just constantly hitting them with ice/water techs while occasionally healing with aura whirl or heal does them in easily.

edit: Also, if they choose to fight Magus I'm going to be so disappointed :\

Patrick's over-thinking combat finally wins the day!

If it were me, I'd probably reload my last save, strip Brono naked, then go through the cutscene again. No sense wasting my best gear. Otherwise that's the fatal flaw in Chrononomics.

It's the part I was most upset about in FFVII, and Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening... Stop leaving/dying and taking my damn gear, dammit!

Now the question is will they figure out how to/want to revive Chrono or will they just beat the game. I do wonder if Patrick really forgot about that event or if he was just feigning surprise.

Also I wonder if they will fight Magus or not when the time soon comes.

When I was 15 (1995) I played this game though about 10 times for the multiple endings. They did what I did my first time through if I remember the ER vids correctly. They didn't get a clone from the game tent in 1000AD.... Brono is not coming back :(

2nd best episode after the Magus castle one.

I'm going to personally vote (not that there's voting) that they kill Magus. I think we all got Magus on our first play through, and I would like to see Frog's improved ending without Magus.

The fair is still there. They can still get the clone.

Also, guesses on how many episodes it will take them to find their stuff? I remember it taking me a loooong time the first time I played. Hopefully they don't miss any crates.

Oh gosh, people think the comments for this ER are bad, but I can just imagine the ones coming from commenters watching them die thirty times at the same boss in Dark Souls... Chrono Trigger is already intense enough. Dark Souls would tear us all apart.

I've been lurking these comments to see what people thought who've played the game before, and now I think you guys have no idea what you're talking about :P I kept hearing "they'll hit a brick wall at the golem twins," but they smoked them with hardly any trouble! Ryan can step up when it's necessary.
