This question goes out to the Shenmue fans, as Dan made a good point in this episode. what is the point of having an inventory, it doesn't appear you need to use anything!

Reading other comments the Tapes can be played at specific locations and you win Saturn games (not sure I have that 100% correct). But EVEYTHING else

Can you put the capsule collectables anywhere? Why on earth can you buy dried fish!? Is there any meaning to any of it?

guys shenmue is growing on me with its quirky humor... What is this website doing to me

@poperamone: I think it's more that you don't necessarily need to use the inventory to complete the game. There's a few utility features, like you can go onto the move list to see what fighting moves you can do, there's a calendar to check date, you can look at photos you've picked up, you can use the save and resume feature, you can see all your capsule toys, you can use the cassette player to play tapes, learn moves you've picked/bought and so on.

As for items you buy, dried fish/milk etc can be fed to the cat. Capsule toys are just collectibles so you don't really need to use them. Chocolate/Caramel/Crisps are a bit pointless - but buying them gives you a lucky draw ticket.

Something happens at the beginning of the episode, told to come back tomorrow, run around a bunch. The Shenmue ER in a nutshell.

That giant Mad Angels logo on the wall in the harbour is amazing. I love that he doesn't acknowledge it at all.

@zafir: It seems strange that there is this large interactive (for the time) and nothing really has consequence. Between that and the plot at this point dipping to a snails pace, with forced periods of waiting around. I can see why they are getting frustrated.

Didn't someone say getting raffle tickets was the fun part of Shenmue they were missing out?

This is a fun series and they make this entertaining.

You don't have to blow 300 yen on cassettes to do the raffle. You get raffle tickets with any food item that has Shenhua (the girl from Ryo's dreams) on it.

For being so focused on finding the offices, they never went into the building called "Alpha Trading," which is one of only three things on the map...

Huh, I had no idea the cat will get "unlost" if you don't find it right then and there, but it does make sense.

It's fun to see them play it so many years after it came out, but games have definitely moved on. Really enjoying it.

The saved game will carry over to Shenmue 2 with your inventory assuming people play it on the same console. In the second game you can sell some things you can buy.

The fish and milk is for the cat. The capsule toys, tapes, and games are collectables. The other food items that they didn't buy in this video are also for the raffle. Some of the soda cans also let you play the raffle, not counting the coffee drinks.

You need to go into your inventory to feed the cat Vinny.

Shenmue is the original idle game.

A story with pacing as shitty as this is not worthy of 16 parts. Never-mind the abysmal content of the plot.

I was super excited to play this when it came out. I played the entire game during Thanksgiving break because I didn't go out of town with my parents. I had a blast, but can fully recognize it is a shitty experience today.

That being said, it is incredibly frustrating when none of the crew pay attention to what is being said in a game and end up stumbling blindly down the wrong path. I know it is dumb to get upset at people playing a game, but it still happens. At least they aren't as bad about it as some of the old Game Informer Super Replays, because, goddamn, I thought they were going out of their way to ignore the instructions on the screen sometimes.

Vinny's new dread at the game stretching out its days is hilarious.

@aegon: The games are more than one chapter. They made improvements to the pacing in the second game. People who weren't able to play it when it came out because they were too young, or didn't have the console, seem to be applying modern expectations to it. A lot of people only heard jokes about the capsule toys or QTE and nothing else.
