Film & 40s: Film & 40s: Con Air

Of the films in the Nicolas Cage action movie holy trinity, we can safely say that Con Air is the one that most deserves to be excommunicated. But we still got hammered and watched it anyway.

An audio accompaniment to your movie viewing pleasure with your friends at Giant Bomb.

Mar. 30 2018

Posted by: Alex

Episode Notes:

This podcast is an audio supplement, meant to be played simultaneously with the "film" Con Air. We are watching the film via a US DVD release. Streaming and rental options can be found here.

Our commentary begins at the film's 5 second mark. It's right after the lightning bolt strikes the Touchstone Pictures logo.

Wow! That was one bad movie! I don't think I've seen that in 15 years. Probably be 30 years before I see it again!

That was awful!

To be fair, twice would be too many times.

Yeah, if an army ranger veteran war hero defending his pregnant wife from attack can't get a fair trial in Alabama, I guess this really IS the darkest timeline.

Oh GOD, I forgot this movie was written at peak "the justice system cares more about CRIMINALS than VICTIMS!" and is basically porn for people with victim complexes.

Film and 40s is genuinely my favorite GB feature, so please accept this as genuine constructive feedback and not just me bitching: two hours of listening to people mocking and making fun of a good, mediocre or terrible movie is entertaining. Two hours of listening to people complain about a movie is frustrating.

That said, you guys are still awesome and I'm looking forward to next week!

@hornet: I dunno, but I like it and they've done this for literally every one they've done so maybe it's just not the content for you. You post sounds less like constructive criticism and more just you kind of being a jerk.

@sethmode: What part of my comment was jerky? I've enjoyed every single Film and 40s up to this point. The difference here, is instead of poking fun at a bad movie, they're not even talking about it for half the run time, and when they are, it's mostly just complaining and groaning about the same stuff over and over. I get it's supposed to be for laughs, but when they talk over important parts of the movie's plot, and then complain that the few parts of the plot that make good sense, make no sense, because they weren't listening, that's really frustrating.

@thekitkatshuffler: yah they should take a week off so Dan can be there for The Rock.

The character in drag isn't treated poorly by the characters and is given a weapon etc. Doesn't mean it's a poor representation of a trans-person, It's just drag ?

Edit: except for the slap at the end.

Regarding the fire spear thing, they have to knock into ceilings and walls to get to the flames sometimes. Or at least to check that those areas are clear. I'm just guessing though.

Dan not being in The Rock commentary is honestly just stupid. Take a week off, switch movies, etc. If there's one movie that Dan should absolutely be in on it's that. Incredibly puzzling decision.

Welp, Con Air aged like shit. Cage clearly gives no fucks with that accent and the editing, direction and action is awful. How Malkevich goes from the middle of the Vegas strip to landing in a power plant has always baffled me when I first saw it and it looks even stupider now that I've rewatched it. I guess I just had fond memories of it cause it was in the pantheon of 90s airplane hijack movies that defined my childhood. The others of course being Passenger 57, Air Force One, and Steven Seagal's best movie, Executive Decision. I watched Executive Decision lately and it actually holds up surprisingly well. They should do a Film and 40s of the first 20 minutes of that movie just for their reaction to Steven Seagal alone.

@ayomistadurrk said:

So I've been enjoying the riffage over these movies but all three of them have been bad and I'm probably not going to watch any of them again.

Face/Off is definitely the best of them, though.

The Rock is legit good though. It's still got some Michael Bay-isms, but its not nearly as dated as Face/Off and Con Air.

I still enjoyed this episode but some of it was, to be honest, really annoying to listen to. Con Air has some real bad parts (everything with Steve Buscemi's character, for example) but there's plenty of fun to be had with the dumb shit in this movie. What's not fun is 2 hours of people yelling "why is this happening? who is this guy?" Obviously the plot is hard to follow when you're doing commentary and drinking but that's fine. Just watch the movie. If you miss shit, who cares? Not everything has to be overanalyzed and explained.

Also, it's dumb that you guys are doing The Rock without Dan. Just take a week off, no one will mind.

@milkman: @stanek1: I actually watched it for the first time a couple months back, so it's possible my mind (having listened to these people for years of my life) imposed some of the staff's voices and opinions in my memory of watching it.

Also, seriously? Ya'll are gonna watch The Rock without Dan? There's gotta be some other Nic Cage movie that's less of a "Dan Film" to watch while he's gone. :(

@alex Sir, I'd like to throw my voice into the choir requesting the postponement of "The Rock" until Dan returns from his vacation.

Maybe instead do "The Wicker Man" or "Bad Lieutenant : Port of Call New Orleans?"

They're slower movies and Dan wouldn't add too much to the commentary.

I can prove it, too.

See, if Con Air is 5.

Then Face/Off is 6.

Then The Rock is 7.

See? Maths!

To Abby and Vinny, I find it hilarious that the two "Memes" you were talking about were actually the same thing, based off of a Kate Beaton comic

Abby's Southern Accent is so, so much better than Cage's (Her Australian could still use some work)

Con Air is a bad movie that is entirely redeemed by its final 15 minutes or so. Fun fact, my Art History teacher actually used the plane crash as an example of perfection within an artistic movement.

And I absolutely have to chime in with others and say I'll happily forego getting wasted for a week to allow Dan to join in on The Rock.

This feature is the closest I'll ever probably get to watching The Rock with Dan, and I absolutely don't want to miss out on that. I know y'all value regularity and consistency but legit just postpone it a week.

I try to keep an open mind, but how anyone can think Face/off is a genuinely good movie is beyond me.

It's pretty impressive that Malkovich is great even in this bad movie.

Part of me really, really hopes that they enjoy Face/Off, The Rock, etc in the same way I enjoy the Fast and the Furious movies or other people enjoy Transformers movies. They are fun but they are not genuinely good movies and The Rock is neither.

And I enjoy Con Air more than either (but it's also not a good movie). My current collection contains neither Face Off or The Rock; I just don't enjoy them. In fact, the recent F&F for Face Off made me want to watch Broken Arrow more than anything.

Man, if I didn't have subtitles, this would have been a fucking nightmare. I remember watching the first Fast and Furious, and being able to watch it without subtitles because everyone picked their spots without talking over plot points, this was just pure talk from the most sensitive commentary ever...

Guys... This is bad. Like Con Air is bad, but the commentary is worse, which is a real shame, cause you guys are funny people. What's the point of talking about John Wick through all of a sweet Steve Buscemi scene? Like the commentary should generally flow from the movie, instead of the movie being completely incidental. Otherwise, just do a goddamn movie podcast. I don't want to complain, but I was really looking forward to this, and it's just frustrating to listen to.
