Game of the Year 2012: Patrick's Top 10

Nice list and it mirrors mine in a sense that while I didn't enjoy genres i didn't like, i enjoyed those genres i had never played.

Yo Patrick can you please help me out and upload a "text" list? Don't know any of you guy's top ten's so far cause my internet is shit and i can't watch the videos!!! Thank you so much for all your work, much appreciated.

I love Patrick's tastes. Off the beaten path, but not completely off the wall. He's not some pretentious jerk about gaming, he just likes what he likes and is willing to try out new things.

I feel like he's a lot more argumentative on the cast, and supports a lot of facts he later ends up being wrong about (and others being right). This has happened on several casts. It may just be my perception but I feel like he also has a huge bias for indie games and against triple A titles, and is more willing to cut a game some slack if it comes from some small studio while nitpicking a game if it came from a major publisher. And it's a personal opinion but I feel like he gives too much importance on a game being "original" and tends to have lower opinions of games that are fun even if they don't innovate the genre- he'll give a game a high score for trying something new even if he himself says that it ended up not being that fun, but if a game doesn't innovate but just has a strong execution (FC3, Halo) he'll talk about how bad it is.

That and all his preachy talk for various causes (bitching about GTA V not having a female protagonist, etc.) just made me really dislike him.

Patrick definitely does tend to state his thoughts in the form of facts, which can be annoying. You can disagree with him, but it's not wrong to enjoy small games doing new things more than triple A stuff on a general basis. It's just easier for him to appreciate that sort of thing, which is fine.

And I don't recall him "bitching" about the lack of a female protagonist in GTAV, but rather mentioning it would be cool if there was one.

Yeah I said later in a post I don't fault him for liking different games, it's just that his assertiveness and our dissimilarities in game preferences means that I often hear him arguing long and hard over shit that I think is stupid. Plus it's always annoying when he insists he's right when he's not, like mixing up the Dwayne/Playboy consequences a couple weeks back (although he's not hte only one to get shit wrong)

I don't know if he did it on the site specifically but I recall a twitter post or something which was basically saying how he was disappointed or annoyed that R* didn't have one, since it would be "such a good way to advance the medium". Which, by the way, is another thing that annoys me about Patrick- his causes like feminism or making games seem legit or whatever. I feel like the rest of the crew take the "they're games let other people decide if they're art or deeper" or whatever shit, and I agree with that, which is why it was so annoying to me to see him preaching about the need for games to seem legitimate or whatever, and then basically making people feel like they should have to feel that way too to be "decent people" (the follow-up to his post about the 1reason shit was especially guilty of this).

Thank you for putting Slender on your list. Slender got people talking. People who never play video games downloaded it to see just how scary it was (or wasn't). I think that says a lot about it.

Also thank you for picking Dishonored. Great game, totally under represented.

So far, Scoops has the list closest to my own.

I'm not biased towards Indie games. I just love games.

A combination of The Walking Dead appearing in so many top tens and having a really healthy discount on Steam, means that it has just found its way onto my hard-drive.

Only problem is now I have to avoid spoilers.

Another good list from the Trickster. It saddens me seeing all the hate for the guy in the YouTube comment but that sess pool is always the same. Also here is my obligatory "WHAT, NO HOTLINE MIAMI?!?!" remark.

Dishonored should be on more of these. It´s an amazing game. Still gotta play Mark of the Ninja, guess it won´t go below 10 dollars anytime soon?!

Patrick defends the games that I grew up with while someone like Jeff is immediately dismissive. Not a knock against Jeff. I love everyone on this site. I was annoyed by Patrick for a bit when he first showed up, but now I cannot imagine this site without him. Grammar aside, his articles are awesome and his opinions are well stated and thought out. Can we just get back to loving the site and realize that each personality makes it what we love. Patrick likes indie games. Who gives a shit?

I think Slender is dumb as hell, but if Patrick likes it why should that offend me? Not to sound holier-than-thou, but that youtube thread is disgusting. Are we not supposed to be above this type of dog shit? Attacking someone with such vitriol is the mark of a weak and ignorant individual.

What does equality have to do with the way he criticises games? I thought that was a good follow up because a large amount of the comments on that article was just fucking horrible. But if you really want to get all upset about that, remember that Jeff commented in that thread, too.

Amen Duder. Diversity of opinion is great. I think part of what Patrick was trying to do (as I would do) is feature games that will not be every list. I also think the Indie and AAA distinctions make less and less sense, it is like downloadable.

@SSully: People hate all sorts of things for stupid reasons. Patrick's list is incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, and honest. You can disagree with someone's opinions, but that's not worthy of hate. It's just the internet being the internet. No worries.
