I can't believe they gave GOTY to [insert game here].

I want to hear a heated argument that makes me uncomfortable. I'm hoping this is the topic for that.

Note to anyone developing a game in early access. Just say it will come out before the next year to make yourself eligible for GOTY awards with antiquated rules. If you slip and miss your target date, oh whoops?

On a more serious note, I should really check out NieR and Night in the Woods.

I don't understand how Dota 2 keeps winning this every year, but here we are.

Good list! I personally thought 2 and 4 would be swapped, but it doesn't really matter in the long run! What an amazing year for games! The top 10 must've been extremely difficult to choose this year. Let's hope 2018 will be as good or even better! Now, time to listen to the whole podcast!

Ok, not really. But still disappointed the staff shrugged it off so easily. It was the only game that really gave Zelda a run for GOTY for me personally.

I think this is kind of a bad list but Hitman being GOTY last year still makes me smile so you win some, you lose some.

@mikewhy: And they didn't miss the date. Same way they deliberated with Final Fantasy 10 when that was released.

@nicotn: Basically none of them have played since the game fell off a cliff. The base game at launch up to the first raid was solid enough, especially if you're more casual.

Huh. Thoughts:

• That's the 3rd year in a row the most stream friendly game won.
• Automata placed way higher than I expected.
• Horizon Zero Dawn wins the "Enjoyed by the staff but quickly dismissed" award.

For a year with so many unbelievably good games, the list feels oddly underwhelming.

Asset Flipping, basically unplayable on Xbox One, never stopped feeling like a mod. Uh, sure.

Not bad top nine list, i could've seen the top three go in any order.

Yakuza 0, Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nioh, Hollow Knight, Sonic Mania, Prey, Resident Evil 7, Pyre, Divinity Original Sin II, Hellblade, Assassin's Creed Origins, Uncharted Lost Legacy.

None of these great games made it to a list of the ten best games of 2017, but somehow Dream Daddy did. What?!

I knew this was coming, but I still feel a little sad. My tastes are so different to GB now, I didn't play and enjoy a single one of their top ten games, (I do now own a copy of Neir and I intend to play it) and the game I would champion, as GOTY - Horizon: Zero Dawn - doesn't seem like it stood a chance.

Like, y'all like what you like, and that's cool, and I like the site because of the personalities, but for all the narrative about 2017 being one of the all-time great years in video game history, up there with 1998, and then this is your list, I just feel like I'm totally missing something. I mean, Tekken 7? In 2017? I'm passed caring about people's love of PUBG, but the video is getting absolutely pilloried in the YT comments because of it (also people are mad salty about Abby, which, ugh).

There is no way I'm listening to them deliberate this for five freaking hours if this was their outcome.

It's almost as if gaming sites favor games that let you produce endless hours of monetizable content that people can watch without paying too much attention while still getting one or two good anecdotes over something that has more artistry then a bad mod.

My list has only one game in common with their list, Wolfy. Fabulous year for games! Some might say the best year ever.

Fucking DREAM DADDY made it in the top 10? A broken unfinished game fucking WON? I fucking despise Persona 5 but it deserved to be on this list more than like half of the games here.

And throughout all of these fucking deliberations (unless it got mentioned here which I very much doubt given the rest of the fitting categories it wasn't even thought of) how the fuck was Gravity Rush 2 not even mentioned?

Also the "It's fun with friends" reason for saying a game is good is awful because literally anything is fun with friends.

A visual novel made it on to the top 10 list. What an absolute yikes.

I was disappointed but not surprised to see PUBG at number one. Also, at least a little irritated by Dan's insistence on apparently writing off Dream Daddy despite (I assume) never having played it (seems like we have a few of those in this thread as well). Overall though (I'm only midway through) it is a enjoyable as it always is, filled with moments where I agree, moments where I disagree, and moments where I get irrationally angry. GOTY!

7 of those 11 games are on my Top 10.

I didn't bother watching because i knew they would give it to PUBG ok sure maybe bottom 10 if you want to be generous but to win it when there are far better and for Horizon not to make the list at all, it's a joke and not a funny one either.

In a year filled with near perfect games, games with incredible amounts of love and care put into them with mixes of amazing writing, awesome visuals, rock solid gameplay, kickass sound etc., a fucking pre-alpha level broken mess winning because the idea is something really fun with friends (which literally anything is) is insulting.

It is amazing how angry some people are getting about PUBG though. Haven't listened yet but just frequenting the site this year you could tell how much fun the crew was having with this game. Not a surprise that it won.

@nime: You mean just like Destiny 2 raids?

Anyway, even if you disregard the fact that it is easy money it's still a game (kinda like, sadly, Super Mario Maker turned out) that works best when you are a streamer (or have a V E R Y compatible group of friends around) and becomes A LOT less special when not. It is also probably the most played-on-air GB game except for maybe Yakuza 0.

Anyway, i'm not as mad as i sound, GB sucks at GOTY deliberations & PUBG winning was predictable, it's just sad that so many game press pros (it's not like it's a GB exclusive issue) are willing to overlook obvious flaws when it gets them good content and fun anecdotes (the latter i also got dozens out of the one time i co-oped RE6 with a friend semi ironically, so it's hard for me to see it as a mark of quality) in a year drowning in games with a much greater artistic and (lacking a less pretentious sounding word) historic value.

I, too, am surprised by the No. 10 spot on the list, but it is what it is. For people to be upset to the point of anger and lashing out in such a ridiculous, unconstructive and irrational manner is a waste of effort - but it is also the most 2017 thing to do, so here we are.

This list is a consensus and there is give and take from all parties involved. Five hours of debate actually seems small given how great this year was for the quality and quantity of games released. I applaud everyone in that room for making the discussion transparent and sharing your passion for the games you loved.

I had a feeling back in August that CrybabyKnowns BetaCheatingGrounds would win and couldn't justify giving these guys more money with the direction they were heading in. It was one of the few games that was released this year that i played but everything else on the list and all the stuff other people mentioned look and sound way better, even Destiny 2 which doesn't look great IMO. 5 hours to get to what i predicted months ago seems ridiculous.

@ericsmith: oh for sure. And for the record I have no problem with it winning.

I have problems with other early access games being shut down because they are still in early access, like the #1 game here was at the time of deliberations. The only difference was the devs said they would hit 1.0 before end of year, and due to the nature of everything, that could have just as well been missed.

Man, Dan's reasoning against Dream Daddy just gets worse and worse. The idea that it "doesn't do anything new" is bad on it's own, but it's particularly bad considering it's being made in the face of two people that feel turned off by Dating Sims really enjoying it.

Meanwhile, he's standing up for Uncharted Lost Legacy and Destiny 2 so...yeah, the idea that something had to do something new just feels like an excuse to cut Dream Daddy.

Also of all the early access games to be allowed it's pretty ridiculous IMO that a game as broken as PUBG was allowed.
