Playdate: [The Real] Super Mario Bros. 2

Watching this, I remember why I was glad that the All-Stars version of this let you save after every stage. Going back to 2-1 after a couple 2-3 deaths is real heartbreaking.

The warp zone only taking you ahead 2 levels is great. I think some later warp zones may actually take you BACKWARDS, but don't quote me on that.

Super Mario Bros. 2 USA is the real SMB 2. Lost Levels is like a fan made expansion pack. GBE spreading lies.

Lost Levels is probably one of the few Mario games I haven't beaten. It's just plain punishing at times. So much so that it would be a pretty good Breaking Brad, but I'll take a Playdate.

Cmon guys. you need to get that first mushroom in 1-1 and then get the 100 lives right there with the turtle walking on top of where the mushroom spawned.

This should be interesting. This game is really hard and not particularly fun although I did kinda like the remake on the SNES in that collection they made (Super Mario All Stars I think it was called- I have it but I'm not gonna look for it for the name 'cus it's not important).

I think they did a Game Center CX episode for this one, and Arino couldn't do it so they had some 13 year old viewer come in (with his dad in tow) to finish it.

Oh man this game. My ex and I tried to finish this on the All Stars pack years ago. It got to the point at like world 4 where you just have to keep sprinting to make jumps it felt like. Once we cleared world 8 we cheered so fucking loud only to be greeted by world 9... then world A!?!? What? Then B, then C, then fucking D! We never made it past world D.... god damnit!

Edit: I just looked it up and D was the last set of levels. :(

TBH while the US version of SMB2 isn't a bad game per se, it's definitely one of my least favorite games in the mainline Super Mario series, if not my overall least favorite. The art and the music are nice, but I just could never really get into how different it was gameplay-wise.

I find it interesting that whenever Mario 2 comes up, they seemingly have to convince themselves over and over that it's a great game.

@needle: there's a thread in the Bug forum on it. Sounds like that's an issue on older Rokus and the format of GBEs videos lately.

In the video the guys express surprise over the game being so difficult this early in the game. The concept was for the game to start as if it's World 9 of Mario 1. It's a direct continuation.

That bit in 2-4 where you have to jump on the falling goomba to make a jump is some straight up Mario Maker masocore shit. Damn.

Is that 2-1 spring actually meant to do that?!?

@ssully: YEP. They do some really frustrating things with it in later stages. Like making you line jumps when you can't see your character.

You guys are playing some kind of weird bootleg version of this game, the game is supposed to change your name to Luigi when playing as Luigi. Physics looked like they weren't changing for him either.

Edit: I think this is a hack of an SMB1 ROM.

@metalsocks: I beat the All Stars version years ago, but forgot that this game has 13 Worlds which it presents in HEXADECIMALS. Just another layer of craziness on this cake.

Legend goes that this game was made by Miyamoto during the only major depression in his life. Which probably isn't true but feels like it with these brutal level designs.

Nice, this game could use more love. It's strangely mean for a Nintendo game, but nothing compared to Mario Maker stuff the guys have devised.

This game is also on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the GBA.

Did a test of an authentic ROM of this game to show how much higher Luigi is supposed to jump in the real game, that jump is not supposed to be hard. You guys have some kind of bootleg.
