Lets see. Taking about how MMOs are failing without taking into account the successful games like Rift failing to mention that most MMOs make a profit. A game doesn't need to have 2mil subs to be successful. SWTOR is hurting mainly because of it's ridiculous budget, the time it took to make and the fact that it is still missing key features that should have been there at launch. Trying to find a group in that game to run a ops is nigh impossible seeing it is missing a LFG system and it's overabundance of servers that fractures it's population over 200+ servers. Paid games like Rift are really successful and release worth while content every month. The game also had a rock solid launch and had key features at launch that are needed in a modern MMO. They also fail to mention all the great f2p games that are doing really well. Hell look at Turbine, SOE, Funcom and all the other companies that are having great successes due their games being f2p. So them championing the doom of the genre and that it needs a serious change to it's formula to survive is silly seeing as most games make a profit for their makers. If they are going to have the conversation about how the genre is stale and needs to change or it is going to fail without mentioning that most MMOs are profitable and also leaving out the growing quality f2p games is doing a great disserve to the genre. 38 Studio failure wasn't because of the genre of game they were making but due to mismanagement. So condemning a whole genre is them not knowing what they are talking about.

"Profitable" is not the same as successful. I bet the margins on some of the profitable MMOs are razer-slim, and only exist because the process of making them has become far more affordable.

And even if there are MMOs out there that are somehow making it work, the genre is stagnant and the user base has plummeted over all. They don't make money like they used to, which is the point of their discussion.

EDIT: And before you say it, the $100 million that Rift took in was REVENUE, not profit.

As someone who has never played an MMO, I think it's safe to say I know more about them than all you guys.

Wow...Patrick must really suck at games if he had to play the ending of Blood Money seven times.The game is perfect and seeing as how he only seems to like "indie/fake art/hipster" type games he clearly shouldn't even be talking about the game at all.

The time when they stopped calling them MMOs is already upon us. Diablo 3 is an example. For all the instancing in MMOs nowadays the difference between an MMO and Diablo 3 is kind of negligible.

An new MMO with a persistent world and emergent gameplay would be nice to see. Probably not gonna happen but Minecraft has shown that that kind of gameplay does indeed interest a lot of people.
