Grilled cheese is called a 'toastie' where I come from.

Jesus..

Why? Does it sound bad? I'm not able to perceive it with an outsiders' view. My initial image of 'grilled cheese' did not include any toasted bread. I could only picture the melted cheese, no clue what it was melted on/in. It was only upon looking it up that I then realized it was in fact a toastie.

What far away land do you hail from traveller?

Northern Ireland. I don't even know if the rest of the UK call it a toastie but when I google that word I see images of what I mean, so I have to assume some other places use it.

I'm in the west midlands as their totally called toastie's around here, though maybe its one of those weird things where outside warwickshire calling a bap a batch you get people look at you like your the devilspawn and have no idea what your talking about.

Here in Scotland we kind of say Toasties as well but for Potato Scones we call it Tattie Ccones

Ok now I'm uncomfortable again.

To explain the "grilled cheese" thing, the full name is actually "grilled cheese sandwich." The bread is implied by the "sandwich" part. People just say "grilled cheese" for short.

Yeah, but you rarely grill the thing. It's more of a skillet sandwich.

On the subject of store people pestering you for preorders, I work in a video games store and I've been told by my manager that if I don't get at least 2 preorders of Batman Arkham origins, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts or Assassin's Creed 4, per day I will get a verbal warning for not doing my job at the end of this week. Thats is why we pester you for preorders, we want to keep our jobs.

I've always known the guys can be in a bubble sometimes, and often have weird blind spots that lead to them not understanding certain groups at all, but when Drew said "People lined up for Pokemon, that's weird! Why didn't they all just buy it on the eShop?" I had to stop what I was doing and make sure I heard him correctly and that it wasn't a joke.

That wasn't the one, it was the "people dont know of eShop".

They know of eShop, they just use it as a last resort if no physical copies can be found, cuz you know, eShop.

my parents were from Oregon so I grew up calling it "pop" as well. I've gotten away from that now that I've been moved away for a good number of years. I don't refer to it as "soda" however. I just call it by the type of soda. "Coke" or whatever.

Its called a "toastie" because it can apply to anything that has grilled bread and cheese. So in some places a grilled ham and cheese sandwich is called a "ham and cheese toastie".

Are we sure it's not just a latitude thing? Like, everyone north of a certain line just says "pop"?

I live in Canada, where everyone says "pop". The northeast U.S. says "pop". It sounds like the northwest U.S. says "pop" (or at least Oregon does, not sure about the rest of it).

It seems like just the middle and more southern parts of the U.S. say "soda".

In Texas, everyone just calls soda "Coke". It's very frustrating. Both as a soda drinker, and as a human who uses words.

"Yuh Wanna Coke?"

"Sure"

"Whut Kind?"

"Diet if you have it"

"We got Pepsi and generic Mountain Dew"

"But... I wanted a Coke"

"We're out"

I'll agree with the hillbilly comment, I'm from Mississippi and it's nothing but 'soda' or just the blanket 'coke'. But the real question here is who says the full 'soda-pop'?
