Doesn't matter that MGS wasn't brought up. Still would have lost. Fucking Ico. Suck it, nerds.

Dragon Age 2 is definitely my most disappointing game of the year as well. I put over 100 hours into DA:Origins and probably 20 more in Awakening and enjoyed them both. But my experience with the DA2 demo killed my interest in that game completely. Even when on sale under $10 I haven't felt the desire to purchase and play that sequel.

It's not just Brad. I feel like everyone lacks assertiveness this year.

"And then she downloads into another body and FUCKS SHIT UP MAN!"

"What about iilomilo?"

"Nah, screw that."

"Okay."

I am upset with myself at how mad I got when no one mentioned the MGS HD Collection. I know it's a great collection and that many others will agree with me, and that in the end Giant Bomb's opinion doesn't really factor in to my own personal admiration and enjoyment of a product... but I still got so worked up :/

GAH!

None of which is helped by the frustrating camera and the inverted controls whenever you hang from behind a block.

This totally bummed me out more then any of the games narrative failings. I've got no qualms about resorting to youtube for those segments!

I readily admit that I wasn't the best at figuring out some of the stages but that was just as much down to those problems too. It really doesn't help that many a solution is based around climbing around those edges.

The final boss was ridiculous in my opinion, the random element of blocks changing just irritated me. I couldn't begin to imagine the frustration I would have felt if it wasn't for the rewind feature at that point.

Well, lets be fair, only certain parts of stage 7 really had you doing that. You're right, the controls totally suck when you're dealing with areas behind the level, but it was thankfully pretty compartmentalized.

Hm, you're talking about the meteors or the transforming blocks? Either way, the former can be avoided by "outrunning" them(they generate at a certain pace) and the latter is just a case of on-the-fly thinking. I really liked the final boss, and didn't have much problems with him. Only died a couple of times because I wanted a gold trophy.

I was referring to the blocks. I also managed a gold but a couple of times I felt like I was fighting with the gimmicks rather than the puzzle itself. Like you say its largely a non-issue if you are quick but it punishes anyone who isn't, and there's not much chance of turning it around by that point as you are at the mercy of the random elements.

I have no problem with a section or puzzle being difficult in a game, I just have to feel that its giving me a fair chance to overcome its obstacles. I sadly felt that Catherine veered a little too much in the other direction. Maybe its a complaint that's very much a personal thing but I found the game fairly difficult in places.

@KaramonD: Agreed. The Portal 2 co-op was awesome. I think it might be the best co-op experience I've ever had on a video game. Such a great game, single & co-op.

I'm disappointed that you guys didn't mention Goldeneye Reloaded in the Best Remake/HD Update category, just on account of the fact that it is an HD Update to a Remake.

I was cool with Mass Effect going more action-oriented.

I'm a lover of hardcore western RPGs. Neverwinter Nights, BG, Morrowind, The Witcher, Skyrim, etc. are far and away the sorts of games I prefer to play above all others. But, I was very much able to enjoy Mass Effect 2. I took it for what it was, where they decided to go with it, and it was great.

Why? Because I knew that they were still making the hardcore, old-fashioned RPG I loved in the Dragon Age franchise. The first DA was amazing. And that it sold so well gave me hope for other new franchises like that popping up.

And then.... Dragon Age 2. Screw you, Bioware. I'm glad it did poorly. How did you not learn your lesson? There's still room, plenty of it, for the traditional RPG. The 1st DA proved it. Hell, look at Skyrim! I know CoD kids that have never heard of RPGs who are now playing that game, and coming to me (the resident geek!) for suggestions on what RPGs to try now that they know they like them. But Bioware decided to toss it all away. sadface

i'm really surprised about the consensus on Portal 2's co-op. was it played on TNT? if so, i don't think that's the best way to experience it

i played through it with a buddy and it was the best co-op experience i've had in years. all the joy you get from working through a portal puzzle, sharing that with someone, oh man, so great. just messing around, shooting portals everywhere on a tough puzzle and then one of you says "hey, i got an idea" and then it works out? man i hope you guys go back to it someday and just play it with a friend. so fun. but then again, so was Dead Island.

I'm really surprised Ms. 'Splosion Man was not nominated at least for best Downloadable only game. Did they just completely forget about it?

Nah, it just wasn´t one of the best downloadable games of the year. In fact, I still think Splosion Man was better. Opinions I guess, but there were definitely a couple of better games out last year, like Gatling Gears, Outland, Bastion, a couple of great PC indie games... or some might say Renegade Ops, but these people are crazy.
