It's our second rescue attempt, and based off of the thrilling success of our first we have every confidence that... oh no.

No, this actually _is_ rocket science, thank you very much.

As someone who has an understanding of the metric system, this makes me want to beat up people with a meter-long stick.

1m/s is not fast, that's less than walking pace

65m is not far away, that's a minutes walk.

EVA already.

It's fascinating to see how seriously they are taking this and watch them work this complicated stuff out; though it's unfortunate that comes at the expense of the spontaneous devil-may-care attitude that brought a lot of entertainment value to the first half a dozen episodes. Still, it's entertaining and this is not a complaint - just an observation.

Let them do them. Don't take the fun out of it. It doesn't matter how they get there, as long as they get there.

They really need to show way more respect to the jetpack, that thing is OP.

I'm starting to wonder if their reluctance for EVA is solely based on the extreme (and perhaps justified) fear of being stranded in space with nothing but a suit.

I think Drew asked the same question but are the jetpacks in real life anywhere near as robust?

I think I'll skip this episode and play more of The Division. The Frustration-to-Success ratio seems... toxic.

I haven't finished the episode, but I have to say this now:

I am losing my fucking mind!! They should have jumped out of the ship like five times already. They basically touched like three times. They continue to be meters away, moving only a meter per second away from each other, the Kerbal has an EVA suit, but they are still won't do it. They are spinning around over and over again, changing courses, changing speeds, and they are afraid he can't reach the ship when he's twenty feet away. This is madness! Just jump already!

After watching the entire episode:

Thank god they finally made the jump! I'm so happy this is working...out....

Oh no....

Now that's just tragic. I still think that counts though!

When they watch the Manley video I hope they record it.

I really, really hope they do. Because I need to see, in real time, their reactions to Scott Manley rescuing all three Kerbals at once.

And then his bonus video where he sightsees on Minus for a while.

I'm so baffled by their confusion when they were close to each other, as far as the ships getting closer and further to/from each other based on their direction of thrust.

They will never get that guy unless they stop underestimating the EVA suit's jet pack.

Yup, went back and saw that bit, looks like that's the secret. Hopefully they'll change their mindsets as they were trepidatious of outrunning an object that was moving away at 1m/s.

The Scottish physicist bloke said the jet packs on the kerbals is hugely over powered can easily cover large distances at relatively fast speeds. I think you can just jump out when you get within about 10 km. Maybe even more....but yeah! Good practice for docking in with the VSS in future episodes.

I love how they're terrified of jetpacking between spaceships less than a football field away moving away from each other at literally walking speed, but then blithely set an orbit that puts them into the atmosphere at high speed and jettison their fuel.

Man this was frustrating to watch. I don't expect them to have a great grasp on orbital mechanics, I dont, but it would be nice if they at least remembered the things they learned in the previous episodes. They are way too concerned that what they are doing is wrong, they don't realize they can intuit most of what they are doin relatively easily with a elementary understanding of physis and a few minutes to think it out. Just take some notes between episodes or something.

Oh, and those complaining about an episode like this taking time.... honestly the whole intercepting an orbit can just be a pain and take that long if you don't know what you are doing [or even if you do, just watch how long it took scott manley to get it right on the special edition for one of the intercepts!]. I honestly got to a point that once I figured out how it was done, I just used mech jeb for future ones of those as it became a bit tedious to me to do it myself every time, and at some point I was playing a game to have fun :P

@frybird: Hahahaha! I can relate to thinking too hard when it comes to this stuff, I blame this imperial bullshit we grew up on.

I love the comments in this one. I hope they're able to read these comments with a smile on their face too, wouldn't want them to get discouraged.

What I love most about Project Beast and other GBeast content is them just doing their thing, not worry about the audience. I love these guys for their personalities and them being real humans not putting on a show. I don't come here for expert play unless it's Castlevania related in which I find all the hot strats.

I believe those "Unknown Objects" are asteroids. NASA approached Squad and asked them to add them and make it possible to pull them into Kerbin's orbit for study (about the same time NASA sent out probes to do the same thing in real life)

There was at least 5 times they could have easily just EVA'd.

Edit: Is there a mod that turns everything into feet and miles? I think that would make this 100x easier for them, as their concept of meters seems way off.

@roy42: They don't know what a meter looks like because they were raised and taught in a system that doesn't use meters - it's not that crazy that they're having a hard time adjusting to units of measure they've never used in their life.

All in all I just wanted to say that the whole mocking attitude that Europeans have against the imperial system is, while not completely unfounded, a little misplaced.

Did I say it was crazy, or did I literally say exactly what you tried to retort with, that they are having the most trouble because they have no understanding of what a metre looks like?

You're right, though.

Those wretched Europeans should stop mocking the widely-used imperial measurement system.

Metric and imperial pissing contests aside, it is slightly frustrating to see that they "want to bring it below one kilometer" when their instruments are already reading 0.1km to target. Regardless if they do not know their prefixes and that there are 1000m in 1km, they should be able to figure out at a glance that what their instrument is saying, 0.1km, is less than one kilometer. Seemed to take a little long for that realization to dawn on them. Decimals and stuff, weird.

Also, I'm not really sure what they hope to accomplish with all of this "stabilization" and "orbit matching" when their crafts were literally down the street from each other. Do they forget how fast and far they were travelling with their EVA packs on Mun when they were busy killing kerbals there? Have they forgotten Bill already!? You're 25m away, get your kerbal out of his ship and float on over to the rescue craft. I honestly can't wait to hear their reactions to how far Scott travelled with his EVA pack from the craft doomed for an orbit around the sun.

That aside, love the series, even if they continue to overcomplicate the shit out of everything.

The frustrating part is that if they just ignored orbital mechanics entirely and looked at what they were seeing right in front of them, ignoring all numbers on the screen, it would become clear. Orbit at 1x timescale is completely negligible to the relative movement of these crafts.

That last minute EVA, quick thinking but all for naught

This is probably one of my favorite series ever on this site.

The tension!

The excitement!

The waiting a half hour for Vinny to finish a 200 point turn in space

In retrospect, maybe the Scott video should have been saved for after their attempt at saving the Kerbals.

A lot of people seem upset at these antics now that they've been exposed to an actual knowledgeable run. The BEAST crew might have been able to figure out their goofs by looking at the numbers more closely and thinking about their meaning, but it's easy to forget that they haven't gotten that much experience with this stuff yet and haven't internalized what's trivial. They've learned the lesson that numbers get big in space and they're playing it cautiously; they'll still need some time to figure out when those big numbers are important and when they are not.

What I enjoy about these rescue missions is all the flack Vinny got for trying to edit and trim the fat off one of the earlier episodes and now the comments reap what they desired: 45 minutes of space parking. This is what the people wanted and I'm loving this shit. Fire walk with me.

Oh man. BEAST crew... this is really frustrating to watch after seeing the other Stott Manley run. I really want you guys to succeed, but man...

You guys didn't need to spend half an hour trying to line up perfectly with the stranded rocket. Just send the kerbin over with the eva pack.

Keep up the good work though. I want to see you guys bring your guys home.

I love how a video about fucking kerbals flying in space becomes an Anti-US circle jerk. Jesus christ. "Dumb Americans use the imperial system hrrr durr." Or maybe, people a lot smarter than anyone posting on a video game website came to the conclusion that the cost is not worth the change.

Scientists already use the metric system for pretty much everything and I for one like the difference between a cold day and a warm day to be 70 units instead of 20 and I like the height variation people have from 5' to 6' rather than 1.5 to 1.8 meters or the ridiculous 150 cm to 180cm. For day to day use the imperial system is undoubtedly better and for scientific purposes the metric system is already used.

And people call Americans arrogant. Ha.

@gimbal_lock: I'm upset at their spontaneous loss of knowledge they already possessed, whatever the reason for that is, not so much somebody else's capability. It's frustrating to watch them unlearn things and do them worse than they have previously. If they watched their own previous video this would even have been way better, let alone anything Scott Manly did or didn't do in his.

I still love the series and think they're doing a pretty good job but this episodes a headache all round.
