Kerbal: Project B.E.A.S.T: Part 12

It's our second rescue attempt, and based off of the thrilling success of our first we have every confidence that... oh no.

No, this actually _is_ rocket science, thank you very much.

@austin_walker: It has been a joy watching you guys learn the game. People are complaining in the comments about how risk-averse you three are, forgetting that even with elaborate care and lengthy preparations, you just ploughed a spacecraft into a mountain!

I do think a big part is these guys seem to get their EVA cues from movies. In real space operations, as long as you do it slowly you can travel long distances with very little deltaV. So going 100m from ship to ship isn't hard at all. And with the crazy Kerbal packs you can do a heck of a lot more. 1km is nothing in KSP for an EVA.

But in movies, you always see the character fearing they will miss the other ship. In movies, EVAs are mostly people jumping from thing to thing with no deltaV capability at all. In that case, you would want to be close so you don't miss your target.

@jhebbel:

Using RCS for rotation means you didn't or couldn't put enough SAS reaction wheels across your ship design. Yes you can use RCS to aid large ship rotation, but if you put enough wheels across your ship in the right places, RCS isn't super necessary - regardless of ship size.

I recommend either :

  • putting SAS reaction wheels at the top of each of your ship's stages but never between a fuel tank and its respective engine - since last I checked, KSP does not let fuel pass through any reaction wheel part.

or

  • putting one major SAS reaction wheel at the center of the entire ship's mass.

RCS definitely helps aid rotation in space, sure, but if you are not wanting to add a bunch of mono-propellant tank mass to your ship, it's probably a better idea using SAS reaction wheels only instead.

In any case, I'm sure you can at least agree that placement of their RCS thrusters is also something that could be done better (circular symmetrical placement across both the top and bottom of the rescue ship "main" stage.)

I get why some of this stuff can be frustrating to watch, but people really need to relax a bit. I'm still really enjoying the series, and I'm glad that they're not really seeing much of it outside of when they record every couple of weeks.

Like I can't believe they haven't figured out rotating with RCS changes your trajectory. "It's our command module getting closer." God damnit guys.

@jdp83: Ohh yea, placement is a big issue as far as the current RCS, placing them at the extremes and using them only for actual maneuvers be it rotational or translation, I believe they already have more than enough mono on board to do what they need to do its just being wasted due to inefficient thruster placement, not wasting it on stabilization would further help.

SAS because of the way they exhibit torque to rotate an object are far more efficient as close to the C.O.M. as possible, complete opposite of how RCS should be placed. If this were my ship and it ABSOLUTELY HAD to be a flying hippo, I would probably stick one massive one between the fuel tanks and then link the fuel tanks with a transfer hose. That way it would be at the point where it is the most efficient, Or just dump the reaction system altogether and use the saved weight for more mono.

Additionally there are also things that look and behave just like RCS thrusters, but use the traditional binary liquid fuel which they have an abundance of, perhaps I would use those.

@35:00 that was overly complicated.... They were basically at a super close intersect. The first time they did this they managed to not overthink it as much.

@tbecker38: Yeah i know. It's elderly walking speed. even 5 or 8 m/s would be easy to jump. plus they were within 200m 25 minutes before that point. I never played Kerbal, but I feel they regressed by a ton.

when you fixed this stream you sorta clobbered up the start where you were.

as in i had to change the streaming type to view this, as the html5 version just stops loading.

you should have when you fixed this, given new filename and address to this.

I don't really want to get in trouble for spoilers, even though it's the comment section of the video, so I'm just going to block it all off just to be safe :)

Was I the only one that was literally screaming at them to just EVA already and jump in the damn ship?! I understand EVA is overpowered, but at 20m, and literally on top of the frickin ship, it would have been a 3 second walk over to the ship. Didn't they do a much longer pickup last time?! I would have to go back and look, but it was probably at least 200m or so, because he had to float to the other end of the ship. I love this feature so much, but that was ridiculously frustrating watching them try to chase the small craft with their damn rocket. Ugh....

@roy42: I guess I can see how you would interpret what I said that way, but I really meant them more as two individual statements. Obviously you can be critical of something and still enjoy it, it doesn't really seem like that needs clarification. The point was more so that some people are just being whiny, rather than constructive.

It's bizarre that they spend so long trying to make their intercept absolutely perfect, then totally wing reentry with no regard for landing locations.

First Kerbal episode I've skipped. Felt like the previous episode but with more fuck ups. They spent like an hour going back and forth and how close they should be and then completely disregard how they should re-enter resulting in the loss of 2 Kerbal. Despite all these hours they have still yet to discover the drove so they don't need to keep sending up another Kerbal to die. They're better off just cutting their losses and moving on.

Drone chutes.... for the love of god.... add a drouge chute before your main parachute. You can deploy it at almost 800 m/s and it will cut your speed enough to launch the main chute.....

pour one out for the kerbals.

Also you have 100 m/s worth of delta v in the jetpack. just get with in 2 k and the same speed and jet on over.....

I LOVE SPACE!!!!!!

Y'all international folks need to get off your meter-high horses (I understand that's an extremely short horse). It makes it seem like you're desperate to prove how much smarter than us silly Americans you are. The fears and shortcomings of our Intrepid Beastnauts have nothing to do with metric vs. imperial. Doof Worrier indeed.

@vinny@austin_walker@alex and anyone else playing Kerbal.

Check out mod called "precision node". I always hated pulling the maneuver nodes around. Default node UI is BAD. This mod will give you additional node interface, you can easily move between nodes and it will also calculate and sum up delta-v of multiple maneuver nodes. There is node memory in case that you want to delete node and try different one and then restore previous one. As an extra, there are different projected orbit views.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcTQ4YwxLGc

Im also using mod called "Trajectories". This mod will project real planet descent trajectory with speed and atmosphere drag calculated. It is pretty accurate and helpful.

I dont think Scott explained or showed anything that these guys are missing. The only thing they might discover from Scott is the overpowered jetpack the Kerbals have.

@gimbal_lock: I'm upset at their spontaneous loss of knowledge they already possessed, whatever the reason for that is, not so much somebody else's capability. It's frustrating to watch them unlearn things and do them worse than they have previously. If they watched their own previous video this would even have been way better, let alone anything Scott Manly did or didn't do in his.

I still love the series and think they're doing a pretty good job but this episodes a headache all round.

Upset at their spontaneous loss of knowledge.....that's a really fancy way of saying you're mad that they forgot mechanics related to astrophysics.

Maybe they should be playing Kerbal every day for a few hours to make sure they don't make you upset....or maybe going back to editing the videos so others don't get frustrated.....oh wait it doesn't matter what anyone does wrong or right people are still going to get pissed when it comes to the fine minutia of simulation video games and how precise or imprecise you can be while still accomplishing a goal!

@caleb1915: I'm not saying they have to change anything for my sake, simply explaining that whether or not they put the Manly video up before these, people like me would feel the irritation. They have a lot of things on their plate and they play a lot of games and worry about more important shit between sessions, I get that. Like I said regardless of the reason for them forgetting things, it is frustrating to watch regression, and that's just feedback. They can do with the information what they will, I don't think they need your sarcasm bombs or attempts to shame somebody for having a vocabulary to protect them from that.

Fun fact: They make these things called "parachutes" that are designed to slow your descent in atmosphere by increasing your air resistance. They can even be used to slow the descent of large craft enough to safely land.

The parachute they had would have burned up immediately as they were going too fast (250+ m/s). They could have attached another parachute that would have slowed them down at a faster speed, but the fun of Project B.E.A.S.T. is that they don't know that.
