I just thought turn up your gamma when you were in the cave, what I would have done on my TV.

Bought a ps 3 last summer in order to play through a lot of ps 3 games that i had missed.

For some reason I stopped my metal gear solid 4 playthrough which was the first time for me playing that game. I should get back to that game but the problem is that after such a long time of not playing that game it would be hard to learn the controls again.

Probably one of the reasons that people wont finish some games that they start as getting back into the groove can sometimes be a bit daunting after a period of not playing the game.

Keep it up! Obviously Drew isn't going to get single hidden object or perfectly complete every area, but that's half the fun of it. All I hope is that Dan reminds Drew to go naked at the ladder.

I used to get stung all the time by bees and wasps, they used to put their nests in bins around a holiday camp thing I used to go on. So the game we'd play was daring each other to kick the bins and then run away as fast as we could. Got stung while riding a motorcycle as well and a bee/wasp hit me straight in the middle of my neck.

So I complained at the beginning of this episode, but the last half was pretty great. Two bosses fought, two defeated on the first attempt. Well done. Glad Dan encouraged Drew to keep going.

I used my account of shitting my pants once to save a tension-filled night. Boy, it was incredible how much of a instant-save it was.

rule of thumb with the camo, keep it at least 85% and youre good, 95% youre basically invisible.

About stamina, just keep it full. Theres a ton of animals so keep eating. Also bonus call paramedic when you do, theres lots of great food conversations with her.

To add to this, tiger-stripe is the most balanced camo in the game. If you don't want to bother with switching camo patterns every 10 minutes, just stick with that and you'll be fine.

This is good stuff. The backtracking was unnecessary but it did make for some fun moments. And the second half picked up the pace once Drew was back in the swing of things. Honestly I thought as a survival guy Drew would be way more into hunting animals (which he's largely ignored so far despite all those delicious crabs and fish around), eating food and doing the medical stuff. I loved all that, but I think he's seeing it as getting in the way of wanting to progress with the game.

You're actually going to have a bit of a tougher time playing it in short bursts like this, because food will go off easily between sessions. It should still be manageable though, might have to make more use of capturing live animals to keep them fresh (it doesn't have to be just for chucking at guards). Still, Drew seems to have a handle on things. He just got in a rough position at the start of this episode. Nailed it towards the end though; Drew you're doing wonderfully. <3

@danryckert@drewbert Perhaps a good idea would be to do a "supplemental" episode (possibly towards the end of the game) where you just equip every weapon and item and repeatedly call Sigint and Para-Medic. There's dialogue for all of them, and for every different animal you can hunt. They're fantastic conversations and I think you'll enjoy them, but I don't know if everyone watching will want to sit through all of them (unless they're as crazy as me) so maybe having a Codec episode might work best.

(Also a sneaky reminder: it's completely optional but you do get bonus items for defeating bosses by stamina depletion - tranq gun and stun grenades - rather than by health depletion.)

Also @danryckert get Drew to pick up some of those glowing mushrooms before you leave the cave(their should be some just before you leave the cave) the Para-medic calls about them are the best.

Knowing what the rest of the Cobra unit members are, it amuses me to imagine what it would look like if they were all in a room talking to each other.

Hey Dan. Remember to tell Drew that the more Items/Weapons he has equipped, the quicker his stamina will decrease.

No matter what everyone in the comments just seems to complain and be negative. I've never played these games and I've loved every episode of this series and I think it's so fun watching you guys play together.

Good thing they went back and got the thermal goggles, those things are by far the most useful item in the game. Whenever I entered an area, the first thing I did was equip the thermal goggles and looked around for enemies, items, traps etc. to get an idea how the area was laid out. They are also great if you are looking for animals to hunt. Those things are fantastic.

Also, life medicine is extremely rare in this game. Only use it when it is absolutely necessary.

And do not forget that you can take off your silencer during open combat to spare them. At this rate, Drew will run out of silencers very fast.

@drew I think that kind of revolver cannot fire unless you pull the hammer back. its a single action revolver or whatever I guess the other kind is a double action. anyway you could twirl that all day and it wont fire unless you cock the hammer.

When you shoot someone and dont kill them they will try to call HQ. If they get in-touch with HQ at all they will send reinforcements, even if you kill them as they are calling. Try shooting their radios instead of headshots if you have a clearer shot.

You guys are giving Dan too much grief. The whole reason he had Drew backtrack for the ThermGs and the Croc Cap is because everybody in the comments on part 2 told him to. The reason Drew has so much trouble is because he is like he said; impatience. He just came of of two COMPLETELY different MGS games and has to change how he played those games in order to be better at this one. He also doesn't have the luxury of having learned about all the games new mechanics either before the game came out, or by constantly calling on the codec and paying close attention to the game. He feels like constant codec calls and no talking for long stretches make for a bad video.

@danryckert the things you should do to help Drew are get his head out of MGS 2 thinking. That game is a better MGS 1, whereas MGS 3 is a less refined MGS 4. Either that or have him switch between camera modes. That might help him significantly. Also, make him codec call at the beginning of an episode instead of the end so he has a chance to use and remember them.

@drewbert You are doing really good at this game so far. Yes, you flubbed a couple parts, but outside of your worst-case scenario approach to enemies, you pretty much have the basics down.

A couple tips: 1. The three stages of enemy awareness are ALERT, EVASION, and CAUTION. ALERT means that they know where you are and are actively attacking you. If the timer is dropping, they are attacking your last known position. EVASION means that they don't know where you are and are actively seeking you out. CAUTION means that any reinforcements will help non-aggressively patrol the area.

2. As far as what triggers the phases, BLUE ! means "I saw/heard something." If you are not seen or the enemy doesn't discover a dead body then they will resume normal patrol. A RED ! means the enemy knows you are there and will shoot you or call for HQ. RED ? means they've heard a suspicious noise like a person being shot and will investigate, usually triggering CAUTION.

Best episode so far! Lots of hilarious moments :) I can relate with Drew. The first couple of areas are pretty overwhelming, and challenging to sneak through undetected. Especially when your playing for the first time. I'm hoping to see more running in electric fences, and shooting dudes in the dick in future episodes ;p

Is there a way for them to get the NVG later on? Anyway great episode, I'd love for Dan to get on Twitch at some point and stream some leisure MGS3.

@danryckert If you are prone near the edge of some grass the camera will switch back to 3rd person, that way you can check out guard routes or pick them off one by one without standing out in the open.

@drewbert There are a lot of systems to wrap your head around in this game, but it all becomes so easy as long as if you see a guard nearby or about to spot you, first thing you do is pull out a pistol and shoot or tranq him in the face. Sometimes you can take out everyone by just putting each guard to sleep as he is walking over to wake up the last one. If you miss or panic, just dive into the nearest patch of grass and wait for them to forget about you.

I dont know if Dan is purposefully not saying anything about using non-lethal methods to defeat bosses or not, but just in case he isn't, if you beat a boss by using a tranq gun then they'll drop their character specific camo.

The Pain's camo wards off hornets and leaches. I think Ocelot's camo gives you steady aim whenever you wear it, no matter your stamina condition. Both are definitely pretty decent camo, but I dont really think either is all that important. Just keep your stamina up, and make sure to burn off leeches and you'll be fine.

With that said, I highly advise they try non-lethal takedowns of bosses in the future for the sake of obtaining some really cool camo. Im pretty sure one makes your footsteps silent, while another recharges stamina when in sunlight. Some camos make you jump through a few more hoops to get them though, so it might be advantageous for Dan to look them up in his off time.

Make sure to call people with the croc cap on.

Guys, he is not going to hear every codec conversation in the game. It is just not going to happen. Let him play whatever way he feels most comfortable and has the most fun.

I normally like the comment sections on these videos and while there a re a lot of well meaning bits of advice, the back seat gaming is starting to get old and whiney.

Dan needs to let Drew know that when you save the game and don't play it for a while time will advance in the game. It's a pretty damn important mechanic as well as the reason that zones repopulate with enemies.

I think if @drewbert took his time a bit more and remembered the camo index he'd be fine. He plays well when he's cautious, and he's got the CQC slam down. Looking forward to the next episode!

The camp Drew mentions sounds just like one George from Super Bunnyhop talks about during his MGS3 playthrough, although I don't think George enjoyed it quite as much as Drew.

That crocodile mask was always one of my favorite parts of the game!

hey guys isn't the whole point of this feature is for drew to experience the craziness of MGS, and for Dan to see how differently drew approaches the game. Isn't latter point is kinda moot if everyone is telling him how to play? speaking personally i'd rather see drew try to play on his own (outside of dan telling him about easter eggs), even if he misses stuff or ignores camo or w/e.

@thechadster789: @vasari: So as someone who stopped ever going to Newgrounds at least a couple years before MGS3 came out, I know I wasn't checking that site when the Crab Battle video came out. Is the "oliolio" thing some kind of meme on that site? The absurdity of Snake saying "crab battle!" over and over would still hold up, but then the second half of the video is ruined by whatever Newgrounds joke is being reference that I'm sure most people barely even care about now.
